Cool and breezy mid-morning start. Lots of erosion from the rains, but also a lot of new plant growth and flowers appearing. Early for wildflowers. Should be a good year especially if we get some more rain before the ground dries out. Brittlebush and creosote blooming as well.
Only saw three mountain bikers. Rare since the pandemic.
Good day. :)

After a couple years of light hiking, I have decided to try to get back into doing it on a regular basis. This was my third hike in the last 10 days. Now I have to work on getting the length back to normal. Luckily SM is close by.

The thing that bugs me is all the trail names being changed in eastern SM. For example, there is no more Beverly Canyon on the trail signage, it's now part of the Pima Canyon Loop. Though there are pieces of the Beverly-Pima Connector spread around. Makes no sense. Oh well...

Another beautiful day to be out. Very few people on the trails.

Got started from Pima Canyon around 0830. Up Marcos, then up Guadalupe Ridge. Dropped down to Hidden Valley at Fat Man’s Pass, then stayed in the wash down to the dirt road. Recent rain has the vegetation growing like crazy. I need to remember to bring some clippers next time I’m hiking the wash. Finished on the road, which I basically the Walmart of hiking trails, but I ignored the nonsense. Nice weather, but I was hoping for more clouds.

Just looking to stretch my legs on a short evening jaunt. Had no idea it was a full super beaver moon, nor had I really looked at the high clouds ahead of time and seen that sunset coming.

A coyote sauntered along the tukee lowlands as I approached the climb. Later, up on the ridge, a pair of them crossed the trail and paused to watch me curiously from about 20 yards. It was too dark for a clear photo. Finally, I came to an abrupt stop as I spotted a pretty wdb in the middle of the trail set up waiting for dinner to pass within reach. It never flinched, but was probably happy that I opted to step around it.

Sometime, I'm gonna have to hit up the Secret Trail and Chihuahua Ridge sometime. Google bot's been crawling random blogs again! lol

Otherwise an uneventful walk in the park.

Took advantage of cloud cover to enjoy a morning jaunt in the desert. Saw a benchmark on the map and went over to look for it. I was a little surprised to find it intact. Headed down Hidden Valley all the way for the first time in a hot minute. Always a pleasure in there.

Another evening hike with HAZ’s most blocked member. Got started from Pima Canyon and promptly got lost in the parking lot as we decided what exactly we wanted to hike. Chumley not only put together a loop that had us blinded by the late afternoon sun, but somehow managed to seemingly feel like it was uphill 90% of the time. Impressive really. I whined accordingly.

We made our way west on Beacon Hill, Ridgeline, and Mormon Loop/Javelina Canyon. Warm, but a strong breeze kept things comfortable. After Mormon, we went through the tunnel end of Hidden Valley, then up past the crosses to Guadalupe Ridge. Three crosses now, large wood ones, two look newer than the third. Temps cooled nicely after the sun set. East on the Ridge, then finished up on Marcos De Niza.

Nice evening. Good workout. And an abundance of topics for us both to find plenty to complain about.

Went counterclockwise and it was awful. Ridgeline and Mormon are awful. Guadalupe and Marcos have tons more uphill than they should. Go the other way.

Removed a couple of painted rocks. Did you know if you wipe "love" into toilet paper with your poop, you can leave it wherever you want? It's not trash if there's a positive message on it!

met john at pima at 0530
marcos de niza and guadalupe ridge to the intersection with national
we split up from there: john to get double digits and me returning the same way
haven't gone west to east in years, so i wanted to do that
also a little tired of the other return options
trying to upgrade my degree of difficulty in general
this fit
pima was packed when we finished
we drank our na beers in a ramada so people wouldn't stare at us wanting our parking spot
thanks john!

Hiked Marcos and Gudalupe Ridge with Kelly, then Corona de Loma to the saddle and back on National/Mormon Loop etc. Nice and cool with a little breeze.
Lots of people out and parking lot full when we finished.
Thanks Kelly! :)

Got started from Pima Canyon at 1800. Chumley and I hadn’t decided which trails we wanted to do, so we headed up Marcos to decide from there. Warm, but some shade. Abundant whining. Continued up Guadalupe Ridge, then dropped into Hidden Valley at Fat Mans Pass. After Hidden Valley we came down Mormon Loop, then finished on the dirt road. Pleasant enough temps by the finish. Good workout hike, and fun to grab a quick evening hike with Chumley before temps get too warm.

TboneKathy mentioned she was going to SoMo for an early hike, and I was happy to have an excuse to get out again and tagged along. She'd never been on any of the trails south of Guadalupe Ridge, so we went down San Gabriel, hiked a little on Desert Classic, then up Young Man--all new ones for her. We dropped down into Hidden Valley from the ridge and looped back from there. Pleasant morning, just a little warm at the end. Saw a horseback rider on the return to the trailhead, and the Pima parking lot was getting some new lines painted as we finished up.

Mercifully not-so-quick night loop starting an hour before sunset on a 92 degree day. Mostly shaded which helped. Even a little breeze later on. Nobody else out there beyond the initial Marcos climb and a single biker on the Pima road. A guy living in his truck in the parking lot seems to be set up for eviction.

Clouds obscured any possible sunrise but also kept the death orb at bay for quite some time. Low temps will be ending soon.
Not many people on the trails for a Friday.
