I planned this as an out and back to hike all of Rondo Spring Trail. The upper portion of this hike is rough with all the loose rocks on the trail (and even not so loose rocks). It's not all that steep or all much elevation gain, just slow going on the rocks. After the last junction to Elephant Mountain is where it gets really bad. I knew this going in and almost changed my mind to do the hike. I pushed through, taking my time. I when from 23 minutes miles to 40 minute miles on this 2 miles stretch at the top, which even includes the downhill parts. Much of this upper area looks to have had some recent trimming of palo verde trees to keep it clear. However, they left the dead branches on the trail, which kind of defeats the purpose and it increased the trip hazards.

After Rondo Spring I headed down Rondo Spring Trail. It remains steep and rocky for the first half mile or so. Once it hits the wash it's immediately more level and smooth and much easier to hike. soon after that there's a single trail that meets up with a jeep road. The last 2+ miles were pretty much jeep roads. There's no signage of any sort, so I'm assuming the track I used is accurate. There are several intersecting cattle trails along the way also.

Once I got to the end, I did not feel like going through the slog of the upper portion of these trails and descending on the upper portion of the Tortuga and beyond. I noticed that I was less than a mile from the Maricopa Trail that heads back on the south side of Elephant Mountain. I began to follow the jeep roads I found and they led in that direction.

In order to prevent a backtrack on the trail and save mileage, I took a cattle trail that headed directly due east from the dirt road I was on to the MT. Once I got there, I discovered I was on the wrong side of a barbed wire fence. With a half a railroad tie left nearby, I used to hop up over at a corner part of 2 perpendicular parts of the barbed wire and used the wire tied to the big railroad tie that was the corner anchor of the fence as a ladder. Almost 2 miles later, I discover that the MT crosses this fence at a cattle guard bike ramp, so I didn't need to go thru all that. I could have just followed the cattle trail that parallels the MT there the entire time.

Made my way back to the lot in 90 minutes less time than on the way out, and saved maybe a half mile of distance, if that. Saw 2 bikers once I was back in the park, then a few more hikers after that, but not many. No wildlife spotted.

Temperature was cool to start, warmed up after the sun hit, but it never got hot. 25 mph wind gusts were predicted, but did not grace me with an appearance.

Apparently the Boca Grande trail is not on HAZ? I'll have to add it. My uniques are falling way below el aguila, and that's wholly unacceptable.

This was an absolutely miserable loop. The only saving grace was that apparently people like Christmas and do things to prepare for it so they were too busy to go hiking today. The lack of people were an unexpected delight.

Last time I was here it was almost exactly 10 years ago. It was snowing [ photo ] . Today it was 147 degrees. In December. There was sweat. We searched for shade. At 10am. In December. WTLF is going on here? It's awful. This should be wonderful now. It is not.

The Jewel of the Death was dry. Crispy and dead. Bonus- the bridge hasn't been washed away in the past 17 years. Because there hasn't been surface water here since Carter was president.

The parking lot hooked up with some desert rabbits because there are about 400 more spots than the last time I was here. Apparently people have no idea what was once attractive about the place and still want to come here. It's a mystery to me.

In the end, I survived. Not quite sure how.

*bitterness is fabricated. Day was enjoyable mostly due to company. But record heat and drought is definitely taking its toll.

I had a noon turnaround time and a minute later I headed back to my vehicle. Lessons learned, I'll need more than 3 hrs.,long pants, and one hiking pole. Sugarloaf attempt was fun. The ridgeline you aren't on always looks better until you are on it. I forgot how much I liked this area. Luckily, I was able to find 2 dollar bills,2 quarters and 5 dimes. I didn't cry today, but I could have if I wanted to.

After a week at sea level, I needed to break myself back in slowly with a few more miles and gain. After getting some beauty sleep and an 8 am start, the Jewel of the Creek lot was full, but I got a spot with someone pulling out.

As expected, the area around was crowded with families and Instagram folks. Once I got into Spur Cross, I only saw a few groups. Temperatures were nice, and there were many different varieties of flora blooming.

I made the saddle at Elephant Mountain and started down. I had planned on a longer hike today, but with little breeze and it getting warmer, I cut it short. A half hour later, the winds picked up.

Back in the Jewel of the preserve area, I encountered the masses that came out after me. I also encountered my first diamondback of the year.

An afternoon hike around Jewel of the Creek and some of the Spur Cross trails with my oldest Rob, his wife Lindsy and Doug, their fur baby. The Cottonwoods were almost at their fall prime. Great weather with minimal others out after we cleared Jewel of the Creek.

I wanted to check out the flora and water situation out in the Spur Cross area.

Starting from the Jewel of the Creek Preserve TH, you could hear Cave Creek running almost immediately. This is a special little riparian area.

Dragonfly Trail to the Spur Cross Trail to the Elephant Mountain Trailto Limestone Trail. The farther in, the more diverse and plentiful the flowers were.

I took a brief break at the Elephant Mountain saddle to cool off in the breeze before jumping on the Limestone Trail. Limestone could use a bit of trimming as it does not get a lot of traffic.

Back down at Cave Creek the Good Friday family crowd was enjoying playing in and around the water.

The rest was just a jaunt back to the TH.

Started at Spur Cross and hiked most of the way over to CCRA. I went just beyond the short paved road section. I don't remember this being paved when I last hiked this 12 years ago, but that was a while ago. Started at 6:40 in the dark. The first 2 hours it was extremely windy. When the saguaros are bending and swaying, you know it's windy. Saw a few trail runners on the west end who started from outside the park. On the way back I saw more hikers and a couple bikers. Finished up at noon and ate lunch at the trailhead. Nothing extraordinary or special, but a peaceful Saturday morning hike.

It's been awhile, so off to Spur Cross. It'd been almost 10 years to the day that I last hiked this with @Tortoise_Hiker.
Remembering the rocky conditions, I pondered my choices for footwear. The worn out Salomon's, the new but lighter Asics, or new, heavier, but more sturdy Adidas. The Adidas were the correct choice.

47 degrees o start with a calm wind. I was shocked to be only the 4th car in the lot at 7:30ish. Spur Cross -> Tortuga -> Elephant Mountain Trail. Not much has changed here. Easy to follow and hike roads turning to trails.

Once off of Elephant Mountain Trail the trail gets thinner and thinner to the Black Mesa summit. There are cairns most of the way, but the tall grass covers up both the Rock Cairns and the plain ole' hidden rocks. I call them volcanic grapefruit. Those are the ones that play havoc on your ankles.

Up top on Black Mesa, I made my way over to New River Mesa to check it out. On the east rim I found the set of glymphs with various ancient vandalism carved into them, as well as a grinding slick.

I made my way south across Black Mesa, kicking up a white tail. The plan was to exit down south ridgeline towards Sugarloaf Mountain. Part way down I got cliffed out and pondered my choices. Going farther to the west looks like it MIGHT have worked out, but being solo (and an old fart) I opted for the downclimb farther to the East. It was still a steep, slippery and slow off trail down climb.

I ultimately hopped into a canyon/wash that ran into the Elephant Mountain Trail.

I was a little warm at the end of the day with full sun and no breeze. I think I'm done with Black Mesa for another 10 years.

I hadn't hit up The J of the C or SC recently. With the cooler temps, I was looking for something close, so this fit the bill. The parking lot at the J of the C was 1/2 full, a good sign for the whole SD thing. The weather was in the 60's to start.

J of the C is just starting it's autumnal thing and should get better over the coming weeks.

Dragonfly, to Spur Cross Trail, to the Elephant Mountain Trail, where I took a cool down break at the saddle.

Next up was the Limestone Trail. I ran into 2 groups of 2 on this section. The breeze simmered down here, so it got a little warm. The spring box at Limestone Spring has not held water for quite a few years now. I went to look for the source in the vegetation, but it was too thick for my liking.

Through the Cave Creek #4, to the Metate, to the Tortuga Trails I expected to run into more people. My neck gaiter got a work out as a face mask as 1/2 the the other hikers I passed did the same.

Back over in J of the C, I opted to hit the rest of the loop

Temps were good for the most part as long as the breeze kept up. I successfully negotiated the area, without being discovered by @LosDosSloFolks. Yea me!

I was looking for a hike to do, and since the scramble to the summit on this one is as slippery as a politician, I figured that this would be a good hike for election day!

We did a CCW lasso loop hike. It was a warmer day than I was hoping for, so I was glad that we started early. The off-trail scramble up to the summit was a bit steep in places, but wasn't too bad. There was a bit of class 3 climbing that also wasn't too bad, notwithstanding some cactus and cholla that sometimes got in the way.

The 360 degree views at the top are really nice, so we spent a bit of time up there.

Once we got back on the Elephant Mountain Trail, the hike back was quite enjoyable.

It is really dry out there. If it had been a little cooler, I would have gone back on the Dragonfly Trail to check out the riparian area in the Jewel of the Creek Preserve....I'll save that for next time

I had never hiked up to Elephant Mountain before, and with the cooler temps I figured that today would be a good day to do it.

I wanted to start the hike at the Jewel of the Creek Preserve, and take the Dragonfly Trail over toward Elephant Mountain. However, the Jewel is still closed so I started from Spur Cross instead. I decided to do a CCW lollipop loop hike.

The hike up to the spur trail was pretty straightforward. There was a section with some ankle-busting lava rock, so I slowed down a bit for that. On the way up I saw about 8-10 javelina, but they weren't interested in posing for the camera.

The spur trail to the summit was much steeper and much more slippery than I figured it would be. Throw in some rock scrambling near the summit, and this one isn't for the faint-of-heart.

I thought that the views at the summit were outstanding!

It was a slippery descent in places back to the Elephant Mountain trail -- I was crabwalking down a few times.

Once I got back to the Elephant Mountain Trail, instead of returning the way I came I went south on the Elephant Mountain Trail and took it to the Spur Cross Trail, and went back to the TH that way.

On my way back I stopped once to take a picture, and discovered that my camera was missing. I had it attached to my belt, and while the carabiner holding the camera in place was there, the camera had somehow disappeared. I figure that the camera case must have twisted off the carabiner on one of the places where I was crabwalking down. I decided to backtrack a bit and go look for it, but I did not feel like going all the way back to the summit, so I decided to end my search...bummer...but it could have been worse: I could have lost my keys, billfold, or pocketknife.

With my backtracking while looking for my camera, I added a bit more distance and elevation gain than I would have had otherwise.

This is a fun summit with some great views, but if you are expecting a class 1 walkup on a nice well-groomed trail you will be disappointed.

This is the first time I had been in the area since I hiked up to Skull Mesa back in the winter, so I was overdue. I like this area and I should go out there more often. One thing that struck me was all of the vivid green leaves on the ocotillo -- the ocotillo in the McDowells have no leaves right now.

Bruce put this together in a flash. Having lightly pondered Apache Peak for many years I was in on that alone. Didn't know much about Elephant other than it didn't hold my interest. First I've been through New River. Unexpected agriculture parcels. Overall nicer than I figured. Still unsure I just looked at the boundary. Basically, I-17 to SR 51 & Carefree Hwy to Table Mesa Rd. Upper thirties to start late March seemed low as we'll be flirting with ninety degrees soon.

Apache was steeper than expected. Having learned on the hike in we had a large chunk of off-trail ahead I waited below the summit when it got uncomfortable. Most won't have an issue. Distant views are better than average.

Heading over to Elephant through more off-trail than anticipated I started having doubts. Without much reviewing I had visions of Sonoran Preserves bulldozed trails. 5 miles further North, boy I looked this hike over well... lol

This was more reminiscent of tackling Horse Mesa across to Bronco Butte. A big boy workout. Heading up wasn't encouraging either. We both failed miserably at throwing in the towel. Perfect weather, wildflowers galore and desire to get in a good full-day hike lured enough to where it would be ridiculous to turn around vs making it happen.

Lunch on Elephant Mountain 3,926 was darn nice. Cardinals Stadium to Weaver's Needle and beyond. Descending East after lunch made two things crystal clear. Cool terrain, for once I found Spur Cross vicinity intriguing. On the flip side, there will be no return since my balance requires safer footing.

8 easy miles back to square one on easy trail was mind-numbing at first. Turned out fine. Still not itching to go back. Definitely a great nearby full-day hike!

I was looking for a place that would be less traveled that we could both drive to.

I'd never hiked from the Spear S Ranch TH on 7th Street. 39 degrees and no cars in the lot at our 6:30 start. It's a nice trail to where we turned off to attack Apache Peak. There is a local "use trail" to the top, that has it's name carved into a rock. It's known as the Fathers Day Trail. Easy to follow and gets steeper and steeper to the top. The only tricky part is finding your same way down, through the break in the wall. Up top, a tattered flag and a mailbox.
[ youtube video ]

We dropped down to the saddle and then northish on another use trail. We lost it once. Off to attacking Elephant Mountain from the west. This was a slow process. Lots of up, prickly things and boulder hopping. Finally on top of the Elephant, the views are great in all directions. We had our lunch at a responsible distance.
[ youtube video ]

Exiting the peak to the east is a bit slippery and slow going. Interesting geology here.

We were happy to be back on a trail all the way back to the TH. We passed 4 hikers and 1 biker through 15 miles. the last 2 miles to the TH, we passed more.

This one zapped me. I always know is been a tougher hike when my shoulders are sore the next day.

a former high school class mate was in town and she likes to hike. Last time she was here I took her out to the Supes as that was nearer to where she was staying. This time she was on the west side. She had commented that she's really getting to like the desert cactus so I thot something up at Spur Cross would be ideal.

But first I had Wendy look at my yard so that she can give me some ideas as to what to do with it for the next 15 years and then we had lunch at Manuels. Wendy had hiked in Sikkim and Debbie in Nepal so I got to listen to them compare notes. That was great fun. I also got to ask Debbie more about her Olympic Trial Running back in the 80s. from an article this week in
https://www.havredailynews.com/story/20 ... 2VSXxrXGkg:
With the 1984 Olympics came the first opportunity for women to compete in the international spectacle. All eyes were on the trials marathon for women and the women did not disappoint.
Tom and Debbie made U.S. racing history when they each qualified for the '84 Olympic trials, his race held in Buffalo, New York, and hers in Olympia, Washington. That feat was duplicated for just the second time for the 2016 trials, but neither of those siblings rose to the calibre of the Raunigs. A third brother and sister pair recently qualified for the 2020 trials, too.
It's really quite the story.

Oh, the hike. So we headed up to Spur Cross with her dog Duke along as well. I was worried that it might be a little warm based on the forecast and that we had such a late start but we got lucky and the temp couldn't have been nicer. The first part of this hike is the road walk but it gave Debbie a chance to see the lay of the land with Skull Mesa ahead and Elephant Mountain to the west. We dropped down to the Creek which would amaze me all day by the amount of water; the most I've ever seen when hiking out there.

And then it was back up to the Metate Trail, the land of the giant saguaros. We spotted some mallards down in the creek and some deep pools as we continued west. We admired these giants and she was glad to see a metate. We got the requisite standing next to a saguaro shot which isn't easy here among these tall saguaros. We took the Towhee Trail as well since I hadn't been on it in some time.

We stopped at the Oasis and checked out the Ironwoods across the way. Next we stopped at the ranch building foundations area to look around a bit. As I tried to remember my history of the area and the owner and the plane accident (I had forgotten that technically we were walking on the runway and that the plane parked where the oasis is https://www.facebook.com/pg/SpurCrossRa ... 5149755412), I took her to the pool and spa foundations. We headed back to the trailhead as I decided to cut off the Tortuga/Spur Cross part as it would be getting late by the time we got over to Dragonfly Trail.

We then walked over to the Jewel of the Creek Trail (I'm still surprised no one, including myself, has done a hike description). We went down and to the north, crossed the creek to the other side (don't think I've done that side before) and headed toward the Dragonfly Trail. Of course, at every water crossing or pool I would have to comment about there being so much water; I'm sure Debbie, who resides in the western part of Montana, doesn't fully get how giddy we get about all this water that would probably be pretty normal to her. Now on the Dragonfly Trail I showed her how wide and high all the old debris gets after a big rain swells the creek. We passed the mine adit as we continued our southward trek to Cave Creek Lake which did not disappoint. The plank crossing here was the finest I've seen out there too.

And now it was a u-turn and up the hill where I showed her some of the old mining stuff. It finally warmed up as the breeze had stopped. We headed back down to the creek and then up and out and back to Tonto Jr where we got go enjoy a now rare-to-be beverage: Huckleberry Wheat Lager as Great Northern Brewery. Fortunately I still had some of my stash from cousin Connie and shared it with my fellow Montanan.
They http://www.greatnorthernbrewing.com/ lost their lease as their building was sold. A couple side notes: my dad owned part of that building for a tiny bit in the early 1980s when it was the Cadillac Hotel and Hanging Tree Bar (where I hung out before or after on the day I got married; don't remember now  ) And another tie, is the woman that sold it was married to a fellow Havreite (a divorce thing :( ). Anyway, it is in a prime location in downtown Whitefish and a beautiful building.

The weather was cooler than usual for late May so we decided to trek from Spur Cross over to CC regional. Toughest part was the car shuttle that morning.. :) Anyways, started from Spur Cross and completed most of the elevation gain within the first 3-4 miles... very gradual. Next, headed over to CC regional... passed by the trail that leads up to Elephant mtn on the way. We saw 2 other people in Spur that morning.. don't think the connecting trail is heavily used maybe by mtn bikes on the weekends. Anyways, finished at the Go John trail and then drove back to Spur to retrieve a car. Nice hike in terms of distance, scenery and solitude and a little bit of gain along the way.

We did a counter clockwise loop starting on a Spur Cross Trail heading North. Creek crossings with water in all but first dry crossing. Took a lot of time finding place to cross. Took my shoes off once. Heavy tall grass in some areas made watching for snakes a joke. Still as rocky as ever. This will be the last time for Jude and I.

Pretty good pace, eh?

I must say, I am rather pleased with myself, even though this hike is not a rugged one. 😁

My wife & I left Sunnyslope at the usual 6:00 a.m., but since it’s only a 45-minute drive to Spur Cross, rather than the 2-3 hours my hiking drives often take, we arrived early in the Town of Cave Creek. So, on the way into town we stopped for breakfast at the Wagon Wheel cafe for breakfast. The food was cheap, hot & filling. 👍

When I started hiking at 9:00 a.m. it was overcast & breezy, and would remain so for hours. Taking flower photos with my crappy pocket camera is difficult enough, even on the macro setting: Poor light and breeze blowing light flowers about, makes it even more difficult. 😕

Cave Creek was a few inches deep, and still running pretty good. The wood plank ‘bridge’ had been replaced, so I took that rather than a rock hop crossing.

I found desert globemallow, Mexican gold poppy, owl clover, lily (no giggling!), flat top buckwheat, scorpionweed, brittlebush (of course), tons of globe chamomile, lupine, dandelion and a couple of more species I am clueless on. Let me know if you can ID them. 🤔

There are five gates on this hike. None require struggling with a loop of barbwire to get them closed: You can walk right across them. (Cattle not so much.) The first gate is located at the south boundary of Spur Cross Conservation Area, just before Rodger Creek.

The Maricopa Trail portion of this hike is 4.2 downhill miles from Rodger Creek to the boundary of Cave Creek Regional Park. Part of it is on old jeep trail, part on pavement, and part on regular foot / MTB / horse trail. Not exactly exciting, especially when it passes by the nascent luxury development — 1-2 acre lots! — but it is still exercise. Even before the roads were put in, it was not the most scenic terrain: just desert scrub. But there are good views of Apache Peak, and the sun had finally made its debut. 🌤

Note that there currently is a luxury development bypass that runs from Gate #2, at Cahava Rd., south to Gunsight, where it rejoins this route just before it intersects with Go John Trail in CCRP. (Gunsight is the small peak southeast of Apache Spring.) It looks like the bypass may shave a mile off this hike’s total distance.

I found the best flowers on Go John Trail between the old mine and the CCRP nature center. Not only was the sun now bright, but the flowers were healthy, colorful & open. To photograph one cluster of lupine, I actually laid half in the road. 💪

At least 15 species, but most scattered instances. TONS of globe chamomile. Fair amount of Mexican Gold Poppy, but the ones in Spur Cross were closed up & dropping leaves. Brittlebush looking bushed. Scattered lupine and fiddleneck. Only globemallow along Dragonfly Trail.

Still a couple of inches deep. Enough so, I made used of the replaced wood plank bridge, rather than attempt a rock hop crossing.

Did a modified Spur Cross loop: Dragonfly - Tortuga - Elephant Mtn - Limestone - Spur Cross and Metate.

It rained the whole time we were there! No views but the flora was good.

Stayed in town and got out to the Spur Cross / Jewel of the Creek area.

Temps were perfect in the am, and with the afternoon breeze, never got to warm.

Dragonfly Trail, Maricopa Trail, Elephant Mountain, Tortuga Trail, Towhee, Metate, Cave Creek #4 are all in great shape

Limestone #252 is fading away. It is also filled with icky Foxtail grass.
All 18 minutes of break time were to pull them from my shoes.
Another 45 minutes at home to get them from my shoes and socks.

Saw a Gila Monster in the tall grass, and a bit later, a dead Gray Fox in the middle of the trail. Coincidence?
