It will have been one year this coming July'25 since I have visited one of my most favorite places to be in our Coconino NF- Mogollon Rim.

For this very enjoyable but short 3.5-hour visit, with a 7-hour (roundtrip) drive to be at 7435ft elevation in June, I was very pleased to have my good friend and our HAZ-Trishness join me. Trish wanted to plan one of her special Mexican meals for our picnic lunch and did she ever come through! :app:

A good day it was with a high temp of only 80F at 7435ft elevation, the Rim Road (FR300) being in the best driving condition I have ever seen it for the ~16.5 miles in I drove, and of course good company and conversation.

Went on a weekend car camping/hiking trip this past weekend with my Son-in-Law, Lloyd, and Grandson Michael to our favorite Mogollon Rim campsite, Camp Grasshopper Site #3, on FR139C. The earliest time of year for our previous trips has always been Memorial Day Weekend. I drove up the Thursday before to check out the road conditions and found them good except for a pond in the middle of FR139C and an occasional small snow drift across the road. The pond was shallow so driving through the right side was not a problem and Turkey hunters had already broken tracks through the snow drifts. The forest was just starting to show springtime flora but mostly still had the drab winter appearance seen immediately after the snow melts off. The meadows in Merritt Draw however had started to green up and actually had grass about 3 inches long inside the fenced off areas protecting it from the larger herbivores. Outside the fences, the meadow grass is kept at a very short length by the elk and deer, reminiscent of a golf course putting green.

Saturday we hiked the Maverick Canyon - Merritt Draw loop. The upper part of Maverick Canyon is known for its Fall display of Bigtooth Maple leaves but of course the trees were bare of leaves and a thick layer of the now colorless maple tree leaves from last Fall littered the forest floor. But the towering pines, occasional snow drifts and rugged canyon walls of the lower canyon still made this a scenic adventure.

This past June-2023, I was able to plan and spend an enjoyable 6nts/7days at this, my favorite Mogollon Rim Campsite area. I had originally planned a second Summer'23 trip back in August, but due to our seemingly never ending and continuing 110F to 115+F PHX area days, along with the forecasted and active Monsoon weather on the Rim this past August, I was just not able to pull off another week visit in August.

For mid-October'23, I had originally wanted to make a return week trip back to the [ Camp Grasshopper - Salome Wild Boundary Area ] to Vehicle Camp and day hike the off-trail route that Oregon_Hiker and I did one year ago on 10/14/22 where I had lost my Smartphone which had 7 years of not backed up memorable- personal, family, and other pictures. I was planning on re-hiking daily this same 10/14/22 route as many times in a week as it would take to find that lost smartphone of mine. The phone would obviously be no longer working, but all my personal pics were on the smartphone MicroSD card which I hoped might be resurrect able.

Well, after much thought, I decided that it was just too risky and frankly dangerous for me to go here by myself, to this very remote and more serious driving 4-WD only area.

So, with the walls of my small residence once again closing in and me definitely needing to "get out of Dodge", our Mogollon Rim in mid-October with the Big Tooth Maple in Prime Autumn Colors would be a much safer and more enjoyable choice for me :)

As many times as I have vehicle camped and hiked our Mogollon Rim - Cabin Loop Area trails and off-trail, I have never been up here to camp for a week in the middle of October during Prime Autumn- Big Tooth Maple Season :FG:

So, I accidently timed this trip perfectly! In my 3 of 8 days stay, I off-trail hiked 4 short Big Tooth Maple areas off FR137, FR321, FR139, and FR398.. all 4 of these off- trail hikes were in their "extreme" Big Tooth Maple Autumn Colors Bliss.. very special it was!

My next to oldest TX Granddaughter @EmilyT (now a senior in the nursing program at the University of AR), had originally planned for the third summer in a row, to again visit me. This summer she had hoped to drive out and camp and hike with me at one of my Mogollon Rim - Camp Grasshopper's for 4 nights/5 days, then drive back to the Univ of AR in Fayetteville to work for the remainder of the summer.

Unfortunately, the complicated logistics of our plans, her safely doing this trip alone with all the AZ "hot" June driving miles to and from in her older sedan, expenses to be incurred, the number of total days required..away from her summer employment in AR, and loaded with camping gear, she would also need to drive from my AZ residence, her vehicle the to/back 250 miles total to my campsite. It was just too much :( Hopefully we will come up with a better solution next June'24.

It was a must for me to "Get Out of Dodge" as the walls were closing in again after a very long and physically challenging for me- Winter and Spring'23.

After a very snowy and wet Winter and Spring, my favorite M/Rim Camping and Hiking area was just gorgeous upon my arrival at 10:30am on this Wednesday-6/14. The whole area was lush green with the grasses 12-18" high and lots of beautiful ferns. Just before arrival at my campsite turn-in, I noticed a huge pine tree that earlier had fallen across the road. I thought the entrance to my campsite was blocked, but no, a forest service maintenance crew had cut the downed tree into sections to clear the road and then place the tree sections next to the campsite entrance [ photo ] .

This trip I had absolutely nothing preplanned except to enjoy seven days' worth and that is exactly what I did! I was up later in the morning because I had misjudged the late night, early morning forecasted temps which were actually between 39f and 41f for my first four nights.

I did do three area short, off-trail hikes which I enjoyed and of course I, once again, exercised my Camp Grasshopper kitchen to the fullest.

Sometimes it's nice to not have an itinerary :)

.. "Groundhog Day" Revisited ..

This planned revisit was six months in the making with longtime friends from Southern California (the San Diego area), whom I introduced to each other over 26+ years ago and have been happily married since, and are enjoying fulltime hiking, Eastern Sierra backpacking, vehicle camping, and Mammoth CA winter Skiing in their now retirement.

We were within two days of their AZ arrival on Mon-8/22 for our planned Mogollon Rim week Vehicle Camping and Hiking trip when I had to "pull the plug" on our trip due to Mother Nature not cooperating :( (the NWS daily point forecast for my favorite Mogollon Rim campsite was showing a total washout for the entire period of our planned stay).

I did not want to risk a Labor Day Week reschedule and visit with my Southern CA friends so we will hopefully plan our get together another year. I on the other hand, needed to "Get Out of Dodge" again and was willing to risk the possible Labor Day week craziness with possible more monsoon rain. I (alone) planned my trip arrival two days prior-to the start of the busy Labor Day long weekend and I planned my exit back home two days after the Labor Day Monday. This worked well but the evening before my campsite arrival when I normally buy 50#s of ice for my 70 quart cooler, I could not find any 10# blocks of ice available  .. this would be a big problem for my planned eight day stay!

To make a long story short, I ended-up buying an additional 3 bags (24#s) of cubed ice and managed to stuff in my already overloaded 4Runner, another cooler to hold this additional ice. On my departure home, day 8, I ended up needing to stop in Payson for an additional 10#s of ice to get me home. I spent almost as much money on ice as I did for gas on this trip!

My actual 8 day visit
I had another wonderful time doing mostly nothing but R&R - Eating, with only two short area day hikes, with no rain at all, and with daily temp highs 82-86 and lows 49-56 :)

Spent a weekend based at camp grasshopper upr cyn loop 3cpo. As always, a nice part of the world.

Waited for the late arrivers before getting started. Humidity was a bit opressive as the moisture sat in the bottom of the canyon and there was little breeze down there. Not much water despite the early onset of the monsoon.

Butterflies and flowers were the highlight. Along with two of the smallest strawberries I've ever seen!

Headed over to Knoll for a late afternoon paddle. Water wasn't as low as I was expecting. Got to watch some osprey successfully catching dinner, and a baldy watching it all unfold from a higher perch.

My first trip to Camp Grasshopper. Long overdue. Quite a drive to get there, but worth the effort. In the evening Hank, Kelly, and I went for a walk and turned it into a cool little hike. Got back to camp just before dark. Good times. :)

I had absolutely nothing on my planning calendar for the whole month of July-2022. So, I decided another 7 night/8 day (July 6 to July 13) Vehicle Camping trip to our Mogollon Rim- Cabin Loop Area at 7435ft would be a good way to break-up the month and also miss a few PHX area 110F Monsoon Summer days.

I planned my arrival day two days after the 4th of July long weekend which worked-out well with fewer campers and other Mogollon Rim visitors in the area for this longer week period I would be there.

A week before departure I had thought that maybe our HAZ- trekkin_gecko and tibber might be interested in joining me for a couple of days. They were, but both had previously planned vacation away schedules that Kelly was good with, but Angela's GNP departure schedule was too tight for her to also work in a short, overnight Mogollon Rim visit. I mentioned to Kelly that I would cook a huge "Cowboy" breakfast for all if she could come up and bring a quality pound of BACON. That's all I needed to suggest.. Kelly next contacted our HAZ- johnlp and before I knew it, we would have four, to include John's wife Janie, for an overnight visit and my late breakfast/brunch for them all on Sunday-7/10 :D

I have been to our Mogollon Rim- Cabin Loop Area now a number of times during Monsoon July and August, and this is the first time I have been camping at 7435ft with only one day (just 1 hour) of actual Monsoon weather. I was definitely pushing the limit of Camp Grasshopper style camping for this 8 day period without hardly any rain. On my departure day of Wed-7/13, I knew I needed to be up early at 4:30am because of forecasted Monsoon conditions that day. I succeeded in taking down my always major, "over the top" Camp G/H Campsite, and packing up in time to set a new record for exiting my campsite area at 10:15am but I ended up having to unload, carry it all, and put it all up in 108F South Scottsdale temps. My eight days of enjoyable R&R, good temps, to include our HAZ visitors along with my two planned short hiking days, kept me smiling through the return challenges :)

I'm planning on a return trip for another 7 nights / 8 days this next month of August'22 with some close friends and active hikers/backpackers from Southern Calif that I introduced to each other 26+ years ago and have been happily married for that period of time. Both now retired, they are leaving on Sun-7/24 for a 4nt/5day backpack out of Bishop, CA- going in from The Lake Sabrina Basin TH. They will retrace some of our HAZ- Oregon_Hiker's recent 7/2 area day hike in from Lake Sabrina. They will, however, plan to setup their overnights basecamp at the Baboon Lakes Area and do various remote inner area day hikes. Envious I am, but I still retain the memories...

It had been two months since my last, but shorter week camping / hiking trip to our Mogollon Rim and I was much looking forward to a return, longer 7 night / 8 day (8/17 to 8/24) visit during our very active AZ Monsoon Season this August'21.

I arrived on a Tuesday at 10:30am and with storm clouds already churning, I immediately needed to hustle setting up my always over-the-top and time consuming Camp G/H Campsite. Fortunately I managed to have my two main shelters (Tent and 10x10 Kitchen Screenhouse) up before the sky let loose at 2:30pm and really hardly let up at all for the next twenty-four hours. Except for the off and on overnight and early next morning lighting strikes (one at 6:15am too close for comfort :o ), it was a wonderful first night of R & R

I only had two short, close area, day hikes planned for my entire six full days of camping and I was good with that. I am better than most at just tinkering around a camp area and never being bored doing so. At almost age 76 now and slowing down, it was a joy being able to camp for eight days and having really no time schedule to adhere to.

I do believe that I would just live here if I could find a way to keep the ice from not melting and I had a ready supply of fresh H2O :D
(I'm certain in a short period of time I would miss a few other life essentials that I now take for granted, but presently camp ice and water is what mainly gates the length of my trips)

Took the wife and dog and headed up for the night. Last visit up north was a week long trip at the end of may and beginning of June for me. Expecting to see a different forest after our strong start to the monsoon seemed in order. Rain was not going to scare me off although I had prepared for the worst.

Not really going up there with a hike in mind, still had to get some moving in. Being so close to some great off trail hikes I decided to do a little stroll down into barbershop. Lots of fungus and water in babershop (some of which was flowing) right now. Luckily my hike didn't have any bad weather but the humidity was a bit much. Saturday evening we heard thunder a few different times but nothing ever managed to hit the area. Early Sunday morning that changed around 1am with on/off rain showers, sometimes pretty heavy, hitting the tent. Haven't slept that good in a long time, wish I could have spent one more night out there.

Relaxing trip, very nice campsite which was very clean, minus one 20 gauge shell casing, the cap to a propane bottle, and a live round of 223 which appeared to be very old. Very nice to see people are respecting this area. Site 2 was occupied by a couple when we arrived and were leaving about the same time that we left Sunday morning.

My middle Granddaughter from TX, now a Sophomore at The University of Arkansas (a Razorback 🙌) and hopefully to soon be accepted in their highly accredited School of Nursing, has been interested for a few years in visiting her Grandpa in AZ for a planned summer week "Camp Grasshopper" Camping/Hiking Trip to our Mogollon Rim. This would be her very first ever- remote, primitive, multi-night tent camping trip in the woods at 7435ft elevation :)

We began planning this trip over nine months ago which gave me plenty of time to deal with all the necessary planning, logistics, and gathering for her of all the necessary duplication of additional vehicle camping and hiking gear to hopefully assure a safe, fun, rewarding, and successful week trip to my Arizona high country most favorite place to camp and hike this time of year.

Airplane tickets to AZ were confirmed about 5 weeks prior-to our planned Mogollon Rim exit early morning on Wed-6/16 and we had numerous text and phone conversations to further confirm other necessary details. My biggest concern for a successful trip was whether or not the Coconino NF might close the forest due to extreme fire danger. As the weeks passed prior-to my Granddaughter's arrival on Mon-6/14, I watched the forest fire restrictions go from Stage 1, then to Stage 2

Also, we would need two vehicles for this trip- my older Toyota 4Runner fully loaded with all my normal camping/hiking stuff + I needed to coordinate borrowing my old, highly modified '92YJ Jeep Wrangler (the original "Grasshopper") that I had gifted to some local good friends of mine back in YR2016. The plan was that I would drive my old, open "Grasshopper" (without a spare tire and with the 4 tires on the ground being at least 15+ years old) and my Granddaughter would drive my 4Runner behind me for the trip up and back. For a first time, she would also be driving 16 miles of off-pavement, narrow with blind turns Rim Road (FR300) 8-[ .

Our departure date for the Mogollon Rim on 6/16am arrived with the Coconino NF still at Stage 2, but this very same afternoon, after our safe late morning arrival at Camp Grasshopper #3, the lighting ignited Backbone Wild Fire with high winds erupted this same day 12 miles West of Strawberry, AZ (at the [ Ikes Backbone ] area).

We had an awesome, outstanding 4nts/5days camping, R&R, good food, and valuable time together sharing wonderful memories (new and old) which included 2.5 days of hiking.. three different on trail and off trail hike areas that I was looking forward to introducing to my Granddaughter. I am so very impressed with her much appreciated help around the campsite (setup/teardown/pack up) and her natural hiking ability on and off trail with a great sense of humor when things did not go as planned. For a first time extended stay, primitive camping/hiking trip, Granddaughter--> :yr:

On our exit day, Sun-6/20, all our preferred exit routes back home (Hwy 87 and Hwy 260) were closed due to the still raging Backbone Wild Fire. We exited the Rim on the only route available which was to continue an additional 32 miles South and East on the Rim Road to Woods Canyon Lake at Hwy 260 then West to Payson to Hwy 87 South.. We stopped in Payson for Mexican Food and Ice Tea before I had to endure 116F driving the open Grasshopper Jeep back to South Scottsdale. I was pretty much wasted upon home arrival with two loaded vehicles in our outside furnace that needed unloading.. without even me asking for help, my Granddaughter proceeded to unload both :worthy: thank you!

This trip was meant to be and timing was everything. As it turned-out, our planned trip return was on 6/20 and on 6/23 the Coconino National Forest went to a Stage 3 status which closed the entire NF.

I was on a 2 night campout on the Mogollon Rim with my 10 year old Grandson, Michael, and his Dad, Lloyd, over the Memorial Weekend. We camped at our favorite spot, Camp Grasshopper #3 down FR 139C on the rim of Barbershop Canyon. This spot has been a favorite place on the rim for Lloyd and daughter Elizabeth to take their family camping over the last 9 years since Lloyd and I first met Grasshopper in July 2012 when he was camped at Camp GH #3 and we were camped about 0.2 miles away at Camp GH #2.

Michael wanted to explore Barbershop Canyon so I dusted off an old gps track from 2015 which would lead us directly to the bottom of the canyon from camp. From there we would take the loop going down Barbershop Canyon and then coming back up Merritt Draw. I was concerned about taking Michael down the very steep and somewhat treacherous canyon side at that location. GH prefers a safer route about a quarter mile up canyon but I've always liked shortcuts and had taken this route back in 2015. As it turned out, the only one of the three of us that I should have been worried about was me. Both Michael and Lloyd scampered down the steep slope finding a doable route while I was carefully creeping and butt sliding my way to the bottom. I don't recommend this route for climbing out of the canyon.

We took our time taking in the beauty of this canyon and for Michael finding challenges to his budding climbing ability at every opportunity. Elk trails provided convenient routes around log jams and dead fall. There was a trickle of water flowing down the stream with only occasional stretches of dry creek bed. The pools got larger and more frequent as we neared the U-Bar Trail crossing and many of the pools had schools of minnows and a few larger fish up to about 10 inches long. There appeared to be two different species among the larger fish. The most abundant appeared very dark in color, almost black, with a wide red stripe running the full length of its sides. These did not appear to be trout. The second type of which there were very few were definitely trout, probably rainbow, based on examining a photo taken by Lloyd.

The lower part of Merritt Draw had lots of dead fall blocking passage up the bottom of the canyon. There were Elk trails around many of these obstacles, some requiring detours up the steep sided canyon walls. Some required crawling under or over fallen logs. All these obstacles and the warm afternoon temperatures were depleting what little energy I had left but Michael and Lloyd seemed unfazed. The creek bed was mostly dry but there were a few pools and small trickles of water coming out of two springs on the hillside. The largest pool was at Drift Fence Spring, a popular watering hole for wild critters.

Back at camp we all agreed that this had been the best hike we'd taken from Camp GH over the years of coming here.

This was our first hike of a two night stay during Memorial Day weekend at Camp Grasshopper - Mogollon Rim-C/Site3 with my Son-in-Law and Grandson. We arrived at the campsite late Friday morning. After setting up camp we took this loop hike from camp through the meadows in upper Merritt Draw. We started out taking the closed road FR9735p from FR139C to Merritt Draw then up the draw to the meadows. This seems to be a favorite area for elk and we were not disappointed coming upon a small herd which quickly disappeared. This was a familiar hike for the three of us having done it together at least twice before during family camps on previous Memorial Day weekends and it's always a pleaser. After returning to camp Son-in-Law Lloyd set out a table full of snacks rivaling Grasshopper's after-hike offerings. Not to be out done, Grandpa later prepared a dinner of carne asada fajitas. It was a great start to the weekend.

I decided to head up to the Rim for a couple of days of hiking and one night of car camping at Camp Grasshopper Site #2. After setting up camp, we hiked over to Pinchot Cabin and back. When we got back to the campsite we decided to climb up the ridge to the west of the campsite and check out the Merritt Draw Riparian Area.

It was a nice day to be hiking up on the Rim. We saw a mountain biker at Pinchot Cabin, but did not see anyone else all day. At Pinchot Cabin we started hiking on the Houston Brothers Trail, thinking that we might go back to the campsite that way. However, after a bit of reflection, I figured that route would be longer than I wanted, so after a short distance on the Houston Brothers Trail, we turned around and went back the way that we came.

The Merritt Draw Riparian Area was really nice and is worthy of some more exploration.

The campsite was clean except for some TP that some moron had left not too far from the fire ring. You'd think that people could do better than that, but I guess not.

This is a nice area, and I hope to get back there later in the summer.

For me, like for many of us, it's been a long, hot, and sometimes frustrating Summer'20. I did manage to get-away back here in June of this year which was good, but my grand plans for a week trip back in August just did not allow.

I do enjoy our Autumn Season :FG: on the Mogollon Rim and during this season I have not camped here for a number of years. So, my next camping window plan was for this late September into the first week of October to hopefully take advantage of some Big Tooth Maple colors and some much cooler day-night-morning temperatures at 7400 to 7700ft.

My planned normal 3 hour & 15 minute, 126 mile drive-up on Wed-9/30 (for 7nts/8days stay) started a little "iffy":
(good thing I was on the road before 7am)
.. Lost 25 minutes being stopped by the Salt River Reservation Police for driving the wrong way in a construction zone and driving 37mph in a 25mph zone :sweat: .. fortunately, I scored only a warning ticket;
.. Lost 5 minutes on Hwy 87N to Payson due to construction at the Mount Ord area;
.. Lost 20 minutes North of Payson due to having to wait for the assigned ADOT Pilot car for the Hwy 87 one way lane Blacktopping all the way to Pine;
.. Knowing better with a HAZ forum topic posted on FR300 road maintenance, I decided to drive the Rim Road (FR300) for the needed 26 miles instead of continuing on Hwy 87N for the additional 18 miles to FR95 for the back way in (I drove about 10+ uneventful miles in on FR300 and suddenly met driving the opposite direction on a one way section, three HUGE semi-type gravel trucks :o Fortunately, I only had to back-up about 100 yards to connect with the intersection of FR141 (which I knew eventually connected with Hwy 87, but I had no idea of the extra mileage nor where on Hwy 87 it connected. As it turned-out, this FR300 mistake cost me one additional hour drive and an additional 35 miles to my campsite). I should have arrived at ~10am but did not arrive until after 11:30am. I finished putting-up Camp Grasshopper just before sunset :D

It was unseasonable warm for the first week of October at 7435ft elevation. The coolest night-early morning was 37F with most periods in the mid to low 40F. The days were unseasonable highs as well in the mid 70F to low 80F..more like early-mid June temps than early October but still beautiful and welcomed!

Also, I was pleased to have HAZ members and friends Oregon_Hiker and longtime hiker/camper/member, lurker blk join me for some days of this enjoyable 8 day stay. I/we did five short area hikes with two of which- Upper Bill McClintock Draw and Upper Buck Spring Canyon having extreme, prime Autumn Big Tooth Maple colors :FG:

God help anybody who doesn't have a masters degree in Hazology to figure out where they've hiked here. Is it Merritt Draw Loop Lower or Merritt Draw Loop Mid-Lower? Or maybe just Merritt Draw? Is it a riparian area? :-k

It's a good thing I didn't look these things up ahead of time or I'd still be trying to figure them out and missed out on the hiking altogether!

Kudos to @oregon_hiker who descended into Barbershop directly from Camp Grasshopper Mogollon Rim-C/Site#3 (don't worry, I linked that one too!). That's a steep and sketchy descent. One and done for that approach, thanks!

The canyon is pretty dry. Plenty of water, but not continual. We took a break at the U-Bar junction before heading up Merritt Draw (Lower?). There was no water in Merritt for the first mile but slowly more pools appeared which was great for Roshi to swim and cool off on what was a slightly warm day up there. Still beats the valley.

It was nice to cruise on the closed-to-driving road 9735P after miles of rock hopping in the canyon bottoms. It's nice to explore these drainages, and I don't think I had done this stretch before.

[I edited the 4,177 feet of gain that apparently I recorded  ]

I decided to escape the heat of the VOS, so I headed up to the Mogollon Rim to hike and car camp in an area that I had not been to before.

I drove up to Camp Grasshopper Site #2, and got my tent set up. Then I decided to hike north on FR 139C, following the Merritt Draw Lower Loop, and for a short ways the Merritt Draw Middle Loop and Maverick Canyon Loop. After a couple of miles or so I got to the end of 139C, and descended off-trail down to Merritt Draw. After the descent I was across from the Ubar Trail at a nice spring, with a pool of water deep enough to swim in had I been so inclined.

Then I followed the Merritt Draw Lower GPS track up Merritt Draw. The track went uphill after a ways, but it was really overgrown with some thorn bushes. I was wearing a short sleeve shirt with no gloves, and since I really wasn't looking to donate a pint of blood, I backtracked a bit and found a route up between cliffs. It was a bit steep in a couple of places, but it wasn't TOO bad. I then went south, in between FR 139C and @grasshopper's GPS track. I had intended to make my way back to @grasshopper's route, but there was some deadfall in front of me, and I decided to take the easy way, so I went uphill a bit back to FR 139C.

On the way back to the campsite I stopped to check out campsite #3 and campsite #2.5. Campsite #3 was almost, but not quite, as nice as campsite #2. Campsite #2.5 was also nice, but it did not have all the amenities of Campsite #2. Which is why @grasshopper charges less for site 2.5, so it has some appeal to more budget minded campers. otoh, @grasshopper charges an arm and leg for site #2, so you'd better have some deep pockets to stay there!...lol...I am just kidding of course!

Once I got back to Campsite #2, I walked up the hill on the other side of FR 139C, just to check it out. However, I decided to save any further exploration for another day.

This is a nice area, and I plan to come back and explore some more of Merritt Draw, and also hike on some of the Cabin Loop to check out the Pinchot Cabin and Buck Springs Fire Guard Station.

I visited Grasshopper for three nights at his camp on FR139C on the Mogollon Rim to escape the valley heat and enjoy this forested retreat. GH decided to take a day of rest in camp on the first day while I started off from camp on a hike to explore the ridge above the west side of Barbershop Canyon. An old long abandoned logging road follows the top of the ridge between FR139C and the canyon and was my guide for the beginning of the hike.

I soon tired of the ridge top scenery and found a likely route down the side of the canyon after studying the topo map on my gps. Although steep, the descent was not all that challenging. I was soon hiking up the creek bed with the plan to continue up the bottom of the canyon until reaching the Barbershop Trail #91 and following it to FR139. There were numerous pools of water with water trickling down the stream bed between pools. In some areas the flowing water retreated below the surface leaving the stream bed dry. The lush green of ferns and grass on the stream bank and the shade of towering pine, spruce, fir and the occasional Aspen trees made this a most pleasant escape from the hot desert of the valley. Some rock hopping and the occasional detour around fallen trees were required but the hike was otherwise an easy stroll on elk trails along the stream bank.

I stopped frequently to take photos of the scenery with my new cell phone (a Samsung Galaxy S10E) and with my old standby, a Nikon P600, to later compare photos. The cell phone has two cameras, one with a "normal" lens, and one with a wide angle lens. Both provide a wider view than the Nikon but there is no optical telephoto zoom on the cell phone where the Nikon excels with a 60x zoom. I soon found that having the wide angle capability of the cell phone cameras and its photo quality in difficult lighting situations made it my top choice for most scenery shots. But, for me, also having the zoom capability of the Nikon is a necessity. So not a problem, I'll just carry both on my hikes.

The section of the Barbershop Trail to FR139 is mostly through thick forest as it climbs up to the road. Barbershop Spring had a trickle of water, maybe about 0.5 gpm. A huge cow elk tried to sneak by me in the dense forest near the trail and disappeared before I could get a photo. Once reaching the road I abandoned my original plan to follow the top of the ridge between Merritt Draw and instead hike down FR139C back to camp. FR139C, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful back roads on the Mogollon Rim. It follows a spring fed draw with lush meadows and forest much better viewed when walking than from a moving car. I've been down this road many times over the last 10 years on the way to Camp GH and it's like going home.

Back at camp, GH informed me that our camp had been visited by a bear during my absence, @AZWanderingBear, to be exact. Wade returned for a visit shortly after I got back to camp. I hadn't seen him since a backpacking trip to Reavis Ranch in Oct. 2015. It was great to see him and catch up on his latest outdoor adventures.
