The Seven Rita Challenge sounds like it might involve a lot of tequila, so I opted for a different name.

Summits north to south along the range starting with McCleary, 88 Mac, Pine, Rice, Ian, Wrightson, and Josephine. I was pushing to add Jack and Hopkins, but apparently 10s had reached his 10-day aeg and mileage goals already, so we headed back down via Old Baldy and called it a day a little early.

Other than McCleary I don't know if the other peaks have names, why they're considered peaks at all, or why they have the colloquial names that they have. But the names show up on triplogs here from time to time, so somebody seems to have invented something at some point.

All told, there were 7 bumps. Each had at least 2 registers. Some were signed by the same people. Repeatedly. Some had witty musings. Some had politics. Some had less witty musings about political musings. Others had a name and a date; a novel concept.

McCleary: With the upper lot surprisingly full at our pre-7am start, we decided to avoid the early Baldy crowd and head north first. Didn't realize Pipeline wouldn't be marked and missed the turn by a few yards before correcting. Sylvester Spring was full of clear, cold water, and producing a surprising quart+/min. This drainage was surprisingly pleasant with some monster old Sycamores.

The climb up to Kent Spring along the 157 was wake-me-up steep. Early morning shade and temps still in the 50s was helpful, but there was still some sweat and burn. A trio of hikers were resting at the very dry Kent Spring, and would be our only biped sighting until afternoon.

Four Springs Trail might be the nicest in the range. What a treat! We took a brief breath-catcher and checked out the view from the point just west of Shovel Saddle before continuing on to the saddle at the base of McCleary.

Unsure of what this route would be like, we were pleased to find a reasonably-well worn route up and over to the first of our high-point breaks on the day.

88 Mac: With oddly-named point 8853 next on our list, we scoped the terrain across the saddle and decided to make a direct approach rather than continuing on the trail past Armour Spring and dropping down to the Crest. This is some very steep terrain, climbing about 700 feet in half a mile, but was mostly in a stand of ponderosa and some nicely spaced scrub oak.

Pine: From 88 Mac we continued south along the Rita ridgeline toward the next highpoint, briefly clipping the Crest Trail for a few yards near the saddle between the two. This ascent was again a bit steep, though only about 400 feet. Now on the east side of the crest, the mid-June sun was baking down on us, but the forecasted strong wind kept the low-70s temp feeling like the low 70s!

Rice: Next up was Rice, which after dropping down a bit we overshot on the climb back up. Here we found our 12th glass jar on the day, and I continued to add to my collection of business cards. Where's JJ's Amex when you need it?

Ian: Next up was Ian, which involved another slight overshoot after dropping down to the Crest Trail and cutting through a nice grove of post-fire aspen growth. This one seems to get a little more visitation, and might qualify as an actual peak by those list sites. But there was no sign of a defined route or cairns to mark the trail exit. No matter, this area is not well-vegitated and travel is not obstructed.

Wrightson: After discussing making a direct assault on Baldy, we opted instead for the traditional route via the trail, passing by a pair of hikers taking a break at the saddle. My thermometer sat in the sun for a bit and the temp briefly notched 80 before returning to 73 when shaded. A fierce gust of wind hit us on the switchbacks below the peak, but the summit itself had only a light breeze.

Josephine: While snacking on Wrightson, I covered the descent options and while I normally wouldn't consider the Super Loop on a sunny summer day, the breeze was doing good work negating the sun, so we opted to head down around the backside to hit up Josephine too. I was quickly reminded what an awful experience this is, snaking through prickly brush and then trying to find the best of the undefined routes that make the final steep loose climb to the summit.

Here, I finished the last of my water, taking time to cool off in the wind. Carrying a 5th liter today would have been helpful. Perhaps the strong wind and subsequent evaporation was a factor in the miscalculation today? Heading off the peak we found a better route. Or at least it was better going downhill. I'm going to cross this one off my list for a while.

The traverse around to Josephine Saddle went quickly, but was also the first time on the day that it was a little bit warm in the sun. Luckily, the breeze kicked up and some clouds provided occasional shade. After a quick snack and decision to skip Jack and Hopkins we made quick work going down Old Baldy, passing by other humans number 6 and 7 before arriving back at the now-empty parking lot. The 84 temp at Madera quickly headed to 100 as we reached Green Valley.

The big day necessitated a DQ stop at Picacho on the way home, and reminded me why JJ does this, and questioned why I don't do it more!

Fun day. I would do this again, but not with Josephine. Maybe Jack and Carrie Nation instead though.

Chumley and I left the valley at 4:45AM headed for Madera Canyon, and we were on the trail before 7AM with comfortable temps in the low 70s and some stray clouds hanging around Wrightson. There were more cars in the lot than expected, but the trails were surprisingly quiet. Chums had drawn up a loop with a variety of peaks we could decide to add on as we went, and we started clockwise with a short stint on Super Trail before starting the steep climb up Pipeline/Kent Spring Trails.

Lots of shade on the way up, and Sylvester Spring had a full spring box and a steady flow of water from the pipes. We passed a group of three near Kent Spring that warned us about unmaintained trails and some bushwhacking on our route, but we never found that to be the case. The wind picked up as we approached Shovel Saddle, and we went out to an overlook nearby before continuing on to McCleary, the first peak of the day and a new one for both of us. There was a good social trail with minimal brush all the way, and with some minor scrambling, we were on top. The register had quite a few HAZ names (including some repeat entries), and we added ours before taking off.

Next up was Peak 8853 (88 Mac), and we decided to take a direct shot up the steep north side rather than circling around on Four Springs/Crest Trails and approaching from the flatter E/SE side. The flat summit was covered in dry grass, and we found another register up there (with entries back to 1993), took a short break, then followed the ridge down to Crest and walked ~10 yards on the trail before leaving it to start the climb up to the unnamed peak that Chumley had seen referred to as Pine somewhere. Surprise--another register, which referred to it as "Ridgepoint 9040".

We scrambled down the SE side and continued along the ridgeline over to Rice Peak (another register there), then stayed mostly off-trail along the ridge over to Ian, where we took another break. The register I'd placed in 2023 was next to a redundant second register, which we consolidated into one jar before heading down to Crest Trail. The stretch of peaks along that ridgeline was a lot of fun, with nice views of Wrightson and Hopkins and some continued clouds near the summit.

We saw one group leaving Baldy Saddle on our way down, and we passed another taking a break there, then had solitude all the way up to and on top of Wrightson, making that my first visit to the peak that wasn't crowded with people. There were some strong wind gusts on the way up, but it was calmer and very comfortable on top. We took a longer break at the summit and talked about our options to finish off the loop, ultimately deciding on the longer return with a hike up to Josephine Peak.

We enjoyed the easy on-trail hiking down to Riley Saddle, then a steep, brushy half mile up to Josephine Peak involved a lot of loose footing near the summit. We took another break at the top and added our names to yet another register, then headed back down to Riley Saddle, taking a slightly more direct route down with some controlled sliding. From there, it was all downhill trail miles, and we made good time with one more break at Josephine Saddle before closing the loop on Old Baldy Trail back to a much emptier parking lot.

Enjoyable day, and by far the longest hike I've done in the Wrightson area. Great weather, some interesting clouds, and a fun mix of on- and off-trail with a combination of familiar and new areas. We ended up hiking to a total of seven peaks along that loop, completing the "Seven Rita Challenge" that isn't really a thing...or wasn't until today. I guess the logical next challenge is the Nine Rita with the addition of Jack and Hopkins :). This was the first time I've seen seven registers in one day, or double digits if we count the repeat registers on some of those peaks...though the definition of "peak" has to be used loosely for some of those. Regardless, I'm lucky I didn't get a hand cramp from signing so many. On the way home, we concluded a fun day with a stop at the DQ near Picacho for some dipped cones in honor of JJ.

I did this as a figure 8 loop. Up Old Baldy, then took Super Trail up after Josephine Saddle. Up to the summit, down Baldy to Josephine Saddle and then Super Trail back to the car. Another swampy day, dew point was 64 and it was 68 degrees when I started the hike. Even rained on me for about 10 minutes at one point.

Everything is lush and overgrown, wildflowers all over the place, it looks nice up there. Appears someone removed the summit register, the lid was still chained to the wall, but the rest of the ammo box was gone. One of my friends attempted to fix the pipeline to Bellows Springs a few weeks ago, but it appears his efforts were for naught. The pipe is broken again and the basin was dry.

Record heat in the desert made for a very nice day to escape to the Ritas and my favorite SE AZ mountain summit. If Wrightson or the range were not here, I probably wouldn't be, either. Sorry, Catalinas.

Not too many people out, but I expect the heat will bring them tomorrow. Fall color is about at peak, which was very nice. It was perfect temperatures for my taste for this hike, but the sun was a bit warm, being low in the sky. I'll like that when it gets colder. Nearing the summit just before 2 PM the switchbacks on the NE side are in the shade now, and it was very cool and refreshing. Sunny and pleasant on the summit, but more like August than October. Not really upset about that, up here.

Took the Super Trail all the way to the top, and Old Baldy down, which was a nice change of pace for me. I enjoy the Apache pines on the super trail, especially above Josephine Saddle, and the section above Gardner Canyon is really nice with the young mixed pines, too.

Not sure why there is so much variability in the reported stats for this hike, but I am using the official route's miles and description's AEG. They're lower and safer, that way. Besides, I have plenty recorded.

Summit #55 of Wrightson. I'm pleased. Might hike it 1 or 2 more times this year. However, I would like to do some of the other trails in the range, and maybe some other summits, too.

Jumped on a last-minute invite with a 4:30 am meetup to join Linda and Gecko leading JLP into retirement. A near-full moon setting on the horizon created a nice ambiance on the drive in.

Super Trail #134
Lower Super Trail has some choppy rock. Writing that down as an RS Note, I was immediately tarred, feathered, set ablaze, and left for dead. Apparently, a trail I frequent is a thousand times worse... the perspective drifts not knowing every single rock.

The trail is super smooth after the initial YDS 1.1 Class

I called out the social sinners surrounding me on occasion, then dialed back due to the potential lengthy walk home.

Old Baldy Trail #372
We took #372 to the summit instead of the super wrap-around. From the saddle up we got lucky with a big cloud to block the death star. Then a rare opportunity to enjoy the final switchbacks where the pace is often pushed to busting a heart valve.

Lunch for myself and a snack break for the balance at the bug-free summit.

We hauled turtle all the way down #372 back to square one.

Synopsis
The weather was pretty nice throughout considering the great '23 heat wave is busting out the whip for a couple more weeks.

Several birds chirping. I got closer to succeeding with Bruce's recommended Merlin app. It's just not as easy to figure out without glasses as eBird.

Most probably enjoy the direction of travel we took today. I prefer ascending the steeper caddywampus footing up Old Baldy. Glad I didn't have to hold back jj and Nick on my nemesis descent.

Great hike and company, appreciate the invite and a big thanks to Linda for driving.

Up the Super Trail, down old Baldy, with a stop on Wrightson. Preston joined me for this, but he left from Baldy Saddle and didn't go to the summit. I wanted to get another summit, but afterward I realized I probably should have skipped it and gone with Preston. I was exhausted with the heat and humidity today. Stayed dry despite some lovely clouds. #47

Jim
Met Jim at Madera Canyon trailhead on an already warm morning, shouldered our packs and then we started up Super Trail. Temps remained decent in the shade of the pines on Super Trail, being on the shady side of the mountain going uphill. Lots of other hikers out, with early birds already heading down. We took the first of several necessary shade breaks at Josephine Saddle, then continued up Super Trail. It was getting toasty on the south slopes of Wrightson, where we stopped for a lunch break in the shade of a tiny tree at Riley Saddle. We hit the east shoulder of Wrightson and cooled off in the pines for a few, where a pleasant breeze was blowing. Further up, Baldy Spring had a few inches of stagnant (likely rain) water in the bottom of the barrel. No water in the crevice. At Baldy Saddle I decided to head down due to an ongoing knee issue, while Jim opted for the summit. I continued on toward Josephine Saddle for a while, found a shady patch to take refuge from the now uncomfortable heat, and checked on my water situation. Four liters down, just under a liter left. Probably good I didn’t go for the peak. I continued down the trail, and took a side trip over to Sprung Spring where I soaked my hat and shirt in the cool urine-colored water. Good choice, it felt amazing, and I stayed fairly comfortable for the rest of the descent down Old Baldy Trail. Growing clouds helped too. I cooled off in the parking lot oak groves for a bit before leaving, downing cold water and electrolytes, while thunderstorms began to mature overhead. I was treated to a massive downpour on I-19 on the way home, almost had to pull over it was raining so hard. Hooray monsoons! Warmer than desired on the hike, but a fun hike nonetheless. Thanks for the invite Jim!

I’m writing this up a month after I did the hike. Sorry for the delay; I’ve been getting more planning and hiking than documenting.. I had been waiting for reports that the snow to the summit was reasonably clear, and as soon as I saw a report and a nice day, I headed up. I did the Old Baldy Trail up and the Super Trail down. It was 50° when I left my car at 6:30. As I continued up, I was passed by multiple parties. I think I must be getting older. From Bellows Spring, all the way to Baldy Saddle, there is an awesome set of switchbacks, and then again on the final climb to the summit. Got to admire the trail construction on this trail. I met several parties headed down as I was heading up. People start early on this mountain! At 11:10 I started my descent. Baldy Spring was a good source, although it is shown in the wrong place on the HAZ map. The USGS map puts it at 31.699103 -110.845818, which is pretty much where you find it right on the trail. The Super Trail, though an easy grade, is exposed to the afternoon sun. Even in mid-April, it was starting to get warm. And taking it all the way back to the parking lot turns out to be tedious and seems to take forever!

I've been wanting to do this for a while but the snow has been very persistent. Luckily, a week getting highs of 95+ in Tucson helped melt some snow. This weekend seemed decent enough since it's only gonna get hotter and the snow seemed mostly gone when checking satellite photos.

On the way in, I saw a White-nosed Coati and a turkey. There were plenty of birders with gigantic cameras, no doubt photographing the elegant trogon. I forgot sunscreen so I'm was gonna get sunburned. Got to the trailhead at 9:56 am. Up to Josephine saddle was uneventful. I could hear birds screaming in the distance the whole way up to the saddle. Not too many people were at the saddle, surprisingly. The Baldy Trail going up from here was fun. I could start to feel the burn. There was one vista with a wonderful view of Mount Wrightson and the peaks north of it. Birds circled the top, riding the wind. Just beyond this, snow started appearing along the edges of the trail but could easily be avoided. Bellows Spring seems to have broken pipes so the box was empty but the stream had plenty of flow. The switchbacks were fun to go up, but tiring. Views from Baldy Saddle were impressive and I took a little break. There was more snow than I expected. There were mini snow traverses and the trail was a mini stream from snowmelt. The switchbacks going up the peak were hard. My legs were really feeling the burn. After a short break, I had 10 turns to the top. I counted each and soon enough, there I was. The summit was smaller than I expected. The coolest thing was the tiny birds that flew above the summit at super speed. Someone left a can of baked beans in the summit register.

There used to be 3 benchmarks up here, only one remains. The original, set in 1903, was destroyed in 1928 when the lookout house was built on top of it. The foundation of the house still remains. A second, set in 1935 was a replacement but was removed since. The drill hole still remains. The third is still there, a reference mark for the replacement benchmark. The original benchmark had a reference point, a chiseled cross. It was a bit hard to find but it was there. I didn't even notice there was more engravings on the rock until I looked in post. It has an arrow pointing towards the cross. Underneath the arrow it says "RP" (reference point) and "USGS" but the first "S" is backwards. Close to this, the rock has "1903" engraved. In 1910 a survey was made using the original benchmark and the Superstition Mountains were observed in this survey. I could barely see the Tortilita Mountains.

After eating a PB&J sandwich I started heading back down. The Wrightson Spring had some flow from the snowmelt and I decided to filter some water for the way down the Super Trail. I only brought 2 and a bit liters and I had finished one and then some. If you do this hike, bring 4-5 liters of water if you don't bring a water filter. From the termination to Josephine Saddle I saw no other hikers along the Super Trail. And everyone who missed coming down the Super Trail missed out. This easily was the prettiest section of the hike. The views looking south on Josephine Peak and the row of pines on her west slope is so cool. The view looking up from the shrub oak to Mount Wrightson is so epic. The trail seems to have had some work done clearing some of the shrub oak from a small saddle after Baldy Spring to Riley Saddle. The trail was very enjoyable here and spacious. At Riley Saddle there was a sign that the trail to Josephine Peak was destroyed in 2005. Does anybody have photos or GPX of the route up to the peak (pre 2005)? Got to a shaded area and saw 2 deer below the trail foraging. From here on the trail felt sluggish. My legs were getting worn out and there was still a bit under 4 miles left. It was pretty hot around here when I wasn't in the shade or the wind wasn't blowing. The canyon under Bellows Spring sounded like it was really flowing. The canyon the Super Trail crosses had a bit of water and there were some cool waterfalls. Soon enough, I was finally back at the trailhead. I saw so many lizards along this hike. Got some McDonald's soft serve afterwards.

I would say that the mountain itself is more beautiful than the views beyond it, especially on a typical hazy day like today. If you want to do this hike then do it soon because soon enough it is going to get too hot.

What started out as “let’s go snowshoeing up Mt. Wrightson” turned out for Rudy and myself to doing the loop. I thought it would be colder than it was and packed too much weight.
After taking a break at Josephine Saddle, we started back up Baldy. After about a third of a mile, I knew from the pain in my hip, I needed to abort.

So, Rudy and I headed down the Super Trail hoping for a more gradual decent and less ice.

I stayed the night in one of the Casitas in Madera Canyon and did the figure 8 hike this morning. Weather was absolutely perfect and had a great hike from bottom to top. The wildflowers are in full bloom. In fact they are on both sides of the mountain. Didn’t see any water running in the spring boxes.

Got a fairly early start due to leaving Ahwatukee at 0430. Headed up Super Trail with plenty of shade. Nice to see flowing water. Mostly sheltered from the wind. Saw several people hiking downhill, I’m thinking they were mostly birdwatching.

After debating for a few minutes, Kelly and I opted to stay on Super Trail all the way up to Baldy Saddle. The moderate grade is pleasant for the long uphill. One short section of overgrown brush on the east side of Wrightson, but not too scratchy. Very windy at Baldy Saddle, where we took a short break before continuing up to the saddle. The wind at the saddle was strong for only a few minutes, then died down before becoming breezy at the summit. Warm temps though, it was not cold, even with the breeze. Nobody else at the summit, which was nice.

After another break at the summit, we made a beeline down Old Baldy trail all the way back to the trailhead. Rather warm at the finish. Saw quite a few hikers on our way downhill. Always great to hike with Kelly, and a nice day on Wrightson.

One of my favorite hikes with two of my favorite people! :y: Weather was excellent and didn't start getting hot until we finished. All in all just a great day in the Santa Ritas!
