Did this loop a few years back and decided to take the wife this go around. Surprisingly sparse crowds at the TH this time of year, when we arrived around 7:30 am. Once out of the initial TH area, we enjoyed quite a bit of solitude all the way up to Tom's Thumb, and then again, once we began heading down East End trail.

Instead of cutting back through Windgate Pass for the lasso loop, we continued on to Bell Pass instead.

Best part of the loop, IMO, is the last couple of miles climbing up to Tom's Thumb from the West side. The first and final couple of miles near the TH are kind of blase.

I really wish they would put in more trails to the peaks/summits in the McDowells, as well as a west side approach to Thompson peak so you could do it as a loop.

For some reason, when hiking out here, I feel like the place is managed by star-bellied sneetches.

A gorgeous overcast day with perfect temperatures all day, and some of the virga transformed to light drizzle for the 2nd half. Busy on the gateway loop, one MTB'er on the Prospector, and four descending Thompson Peak. After that, nobody.

The climb to the saddle where I went down off-trail was steep as always. Slow going on the steep downhill off-trail section to get to the Quartz Trail. I'm not a big fan of the Paradise Trail, but it helped me complete my loop.

Hit the trail around 6am. Hiked in shade most of the way to Tom’s Thumb. Had the trail mostly to myself after Windgate Pass junction, except for a trail steward heading down the switchbacks. I startled a stripey snake which quickly exited stage left. There were a fair number of hikers at Tom’s Thumb, all of whom had come up the east side.

Had a rest and pressed on down East End. From there the sun was up and there was no respite from it the rest of the trip. Nobody on East End except my second snake of the day, who had no stripes and hastily zipped off to the left. This one tried really hard to convince me he was a rattler but I wasn’t fooled.

Saw a lone jogger headed up Bell Pass, and then snake number three. This was a stripey one and he wasn’t as zippy as the first two. Zippy enough to elude my camera though.

Enjoyed the view from Bell Pass while scarfing a venison bar, and watched a couple hikers make their ascent from the west. Once they reached the saddle, I headed down. Passed maybe a half dozen more hikers before reaching the connector back to the trailhead, but no more snakes.

Led a Meetup but the stats scared away most of the participants. Parked further than ever from packed Gateway TH. Saguaro and Gateway trails brimming with people. Bell Pass is challenging enough to ward off most of them.

After turning on Prospector there was virtually noone else. Then came that damn Thompson Peak rd. 😱 Oh yeah, that's why virtually everone backed out. 😛 When finally back to TH, I took another trail back to my vehicle. No joke!

Office shut down this week due to covid outbreak. Feeling my best during this in awhile. Time to up the ante. Found a few advanced hikers on meetup & away we went.

Despite starting from the crowded gateway TH, the goal is to get on the Tom's thumb trail and get away from everyone else. On a weekend, nonetheless.

Beginning on the packed saguaro trail, we then veered L onto the busy Gateway Trail. Then straight onto Windgate. The majority turned here for the easier loop 😎 We decided to pass our turn & proceed uphill to inspiration point. No one else up there 😌

Turned back to head up Tom's Thumb. Back end has plenty of EG on it & virtually no people 👍 Realized the small posts out here show where u r on the map. Turned right to climb up to the Lookout. Never crossed paths with any of the Tom's Thumb crowds. 😊

Got started from the Gateway TH just before 0900. Took the northern part of Gateway Loop over to Windgate Pass Trail, then took that to the southern end of Tom’s Thumb Trail. Headed up Tom’s Thumb. I like this side of the trail much more than the northern side. Once up top, decided to go over to the Lookout as well, then went over to Tom’s Thumb. After that, dropped down East End Trail. I was originally going to finish the loop on Windgate Pass, but once at the junction, I opted to loop around on Bell Pass Trail instead. I like the eastern side of Bell Pass much more than the western side. Finished up on the southern side of Gateway Loop just before 1500.

Good loop, only saw people on Gateway Loop and right around Tom’s Thumb, save for about four other hikers on the rest of the hike. One was an odd fellow who asked if he could touch my hair to see if it was as soft as it looked. Um, no, no you may not, and it’s not worth the bodily harm if you try. Bizarre. Decent enough weather, although still warm. Lots of pink fiberglass Area Closed signs along the top of Tom’s Thumb area.

First time hiking from the Gateway Trailhead. Unfortunately, I didn't carpool or drive my electric vehicle or bring my groomed poodle, so I wasn't able to park in the fancy "reserved" spots.

I did arrive early though, and managed to avoid the crowds. Only saw a handful of hikers until I got close to Tom's Thumb.

Took the side trip up to The Lookout. Nice views. Back on the trail for a bit and then some extracurricular exploring.

On the backside of the loop, traffic was once again minimal. On the way back, I decided to bypass Windgate Pass and extend the loop over to the Bell Pass Trail.

Enjoyed the summit and ridgeline views.

got started around 0630
nice sunrise
quick visit to inspiration point
added on saguaro loop and the nature trail to hit double digits
trails were not busy at all until i got back on gateway loop after bell pass
decided i don't really care for windgate pass trail
better to go up bell pass trail, then up east end and down tom's thumb for a bigger loop

need to be doing double digit hikes on my days off, rather than biking the grand canal like i wanted to
got a late start at 1130
wouldn't it be better to be finished by then?
anyway
gateway loop, bell pass, east end, the lookout, tom's thumb, windgate pass, gateway loop
added saguaro and nature trails for extra mileage and linkage
good loop; it's been awhile since i've done this combo
more people out than i would expect given the temps, especially on the outer trails
east end was easier than i remember, possibly because i was going slower
the lookout is a nice viewpoint and worth a detour
always enjoy the terrain up near tom's thumb
considered east end, but needed more water and some snacks to add that on
no critters other than a few lizards, no flowers other than a few ratty globemallow

When we pulled into the parking lot, my jaw about dropped at the sight of the sea of vehicles. Am I making a mistake in coming here?

The saguaro trail was flooded with peeps. We then turned right. Cut the number down but still a fair amount. Another right reduced the number further. This takes u past the more popular smaller loop & onto the more difficult section of bell pass.

At the top we made yet another right. Solitude 😀 The lengthier way back is not overly difficult. We scouted tougher potential future outings. So many options, one is sure to be a fit for u.

Persuaded by the triplogs ,by trekkin_gecko and johnlp, decided to make the long drive instead of my usual Pass Mountain loop. This time of year could call this the lupine loop. Looks like they are fading some and with the warmer temps and no rain not likely to last much longer. With an early weekday start only 2 other hikers leaving the trailhead near the same time. Last year did this CCW so today did it CW, not much different but apparently the photos are not as good and trip was slower in this direction :D , skipped the gateway saddle today. Only saw about 10 other hikers all morning until getting back to the trailhead where at least that many were hanging out on the bridge by the trailhead [-( Most of the color noted on the windgate trail, making for frequent picture stops after leaving inspiration point , snack break at Windgates Pass. Nice hike today but don’t think I’ll to be back until next spring.

A group of us went to the Gateway TH and did this CCW Loop. It was a nice day to be out hiking -- it was a tad cool at the start but we warmed up by the time we got to Bell Pass.

There was nothing really remarkable about this hike -- it was a good fitness hike in the McDowells. It got a bit crowded on the trail on the way back, especially as we neared the TH. I often never see anybody on the trails when I hike, so this one was a bit of a switch.

I wanted to do an exercise hike not far from home, so I chose this one, even though it is not my favorite hike.

There was some cloud cover and nice breezes early in the hike, both of which were quite welcome.

I almost stepped on a rattlesnake that was curled up in a ball on the right side of the trail. I saw the snake just as my foot was about 6" away from stepping on him -- but the snake never moved, and I was able to lengthen my stride just in time to avoid stepping on the snake.

It was nice to do a low elevation hike for a change -- I could actually breathe on this hike!
