I decided to hike up to Peak 5057 today; this is probably the 15th time that I have been up there.

We did an out-and-back from the Hieroglyphic TH by going up and down through Hieroglyphic Canyon.

It was mostly a cool, cloudy, and breezy day, although the sun would occasionally come out and warm things up.

As others have reported, there was a lot of heavy fire damage all along the ridgeline from Hieroglyphic Canyon over to 5057. I wonder how much erosion that there will be along the trail whenever some heavy rainstorms hit the area.

It was a good but tiring hike.

I just discovered this week that there are actual trails up to the Shaka Cave and Carney springs waterfall. The day after hiking 14 miles on the AZT this seemed like a nice shorter hike with some elevation gain to make it a bit of a workout.

After the turnoff to the Wave Cave, I missed the turnoff to Shaka Cave. when I noticed this I kept going because i was on a trail and then I realized I was on the ridgeline trail so I turned around and got on the trail to the Shaka cave.

I checked the Shaka Cave out then made my way up to the falls. it's a really cool area at the bottom, but all the boulders laying there made it pretty obvious that it's a pretty dangerous area to hang around.

Made my way back down and saw a connecting trail over to the Wave Cave Trail and hiked that, then hiked another connector trail from LGM Trail to the Carney Springs road and looped back to the LGM Trail and then back to the car, making for a shorter hike, ever for a lazy Sunday for me.

On the way back, I was asked twice if this was the right trail to the Wave Cave, which obviously is still getting more popular. The last people who asked were a married couple from out of townand were interested in more details because they intended to hike at Carney Springs TH, which by then was full. I was happy to give them as much knowledge as I have and wished them a nice hike.

I saw some trails on the satellite view just north of the Lost Goldmine Trail. I made some tracks based on that and decided to go check them out for an easy Sunday morning hike. I got just a little bit into the first one when I saw a trail junction at the barbed wire fence head further north and uphill. I decided to start to follow that and it soon became obvious that this went to the summit of the Wedding Cake. I wasn't sure what the name of it is, but I knew I was heading to the top.

There is a very well defined trail all the way to the top. There's only one or two spots where it becomes steep with some scree. The climb is pretty easy and the views at the top are well worth the effort. Lots of really nice views all along Superstition Mountain, which looks a lot closer once you get a little higher.

On the way down I got back on the trails I marked with tracks and hiked those. One trail branched off to an area I didn't mark. It was mostly bare rock and marked with spray painted white dots. I don't get as hacked off as most AZ hikers about this, having seen this done in Europe and generally accepted there as an appropriate way to mark a trail. But in a few spots it was a little overkill. It was fun hiking these trails on the bare rock, much nicer that busting through vegetation or ankle bust loose rocks.

Once I got back to the flats, I hiked the dirt road between Turk's Head and Wedding Cake to it's terminus. On the way out to there, I saw to women walking down off of Turk's Head very casually, indicating that there must be an established trail there. On my way back down the road, I scouted over towards that area and found a few different trails that look like they head up there. One was marked with a cairn so that might be the ticket. Looks like another plan to make a trip out and head up there.

Took some dirt roads and bike trails back to the Hiero TH to make a loop out of it. Ended up doing fewer miles than I expected, but more AEG. Ended up having more fun on this hike than I expected. The parking lot was packed a usual, with the late arrivals circling the lot waiting for someone to leave.

An early morning leg stretcher on Lost Goldmine & Hieroglyphics trails. Started at 5:30a but no need for a headlamp. Only bunnies and beeves out on the trail. There were several other hikers but no crowd. I turned back for the longhorns since I was wearing red. No time to test the red myth. It was relatively cool. Can't wait for the weather to break for real.

Went out to the Peralta foothills via the Hieroglyphic TH for a Sunday hike. Made it up as I went along to try to get to 7 or 8 miles. the 2nd half of the hike I saw quite a few cattle. Some ran away and others lingered and stared as I walked by.

It was hot at first as the sun hit the horizon and then when the clouds came out things got cooler. Saw a few bikers here and there but no other hikers.

I've recorded this loop five times and have probably completed it more than ten. I suppose it was time to publish a guide for it then. :-s Hieroglyphic Spring was still slightly trickling, but funky like usual. I'd guess the families and kids that only make it this far still think it's everything is awesome. It was enjoyable ascending the canyon for once without an obscene number of cairns along the way. Perhaps people are catching on that a duck every five feet really isn't necessary (reference the Wave Cave arrows erased for more context). It also was nice to experience the Supes in mid-May with all the wildflowers and fresh leaf outs. The heat usually keeps me away, but today had substantial wildflowers. The flaming yellow and red Dudleya stalks were peaking. I reached the summit in two hours and speaking of culmination, there was an entomology orgy of flying ants, bee flies and tarantula hawks circling. The former two groups were dive bombing and getting spunky with each other, where the ants were antisocial and not crossing over to the other species. :-k I was at the West Boulder Saddle before eight, about three hours into the hike, where there was still some good shade at the pass. After this brief and final break, the stretch dash got hot. Along Goldmine was the only place I saw another person, which was south of Turks Head. She had just turned around, informing me that half her water supply was gone, and she wouldn't be finding the bygone gold mine. Definitely a better, more diverse, scenic and challenging loop than the intensive forest bath of the [ Derrick - Horton Loop ]

I needed a quick hike to get some miles on my achilles and Jason wanted to do one near his house, we opted for Lost Goldmine Trail.

No other cars at the LGM Trailhead on Peralta Road when we started out and the weather was really pleasant. The plan was do 2-3 miles and turn around.

The trail was in good shape and appeared to have some maintenance done recently. We made it past the Wave Cave Expressway and the masses and turned around after about 2 miles. The brittlebush was still blooming and most of the hedgehog cacti had blooms as well. A few other signs of flowers, but it looks like the season is just about done. The cholla and other cacti will start soon with their blooms.

I did notice the large amounts of red brome grass and stinknet all along the trail. That is depressing. One spark/lightning strike and this entire area can get roasted. The new normal in the future Superstition Grasslands Wilderness :(

I have always liked this trail. The views of the mountain are hard to beat.

On the way back we saw a bunch of people along the Carney Springs trail and going out from the LGM TH too. The higher temps are coming soon and the pleasant/cool start changed to a little hotter by the time we returned.

I've been doing PT and limited walks/hike, but it's looking like things are improving with my ankle/calf and I will be back abusing it full throttle soon.

Thanks for the invite Jason!

Started from the Hiero TH and got a bit of a later start, close to 7am. It was a little chilly in the shade, but as soon as the sunlight hit it got pretty warm. I did a counter clockwise loop heading south from the TH down to the Old Horse Trail, hiked east and then north to the Lost Goldmine Trail and headed back. Early on 2 parachute gliders flew by making hellaciously loud noise to break up the morning peace.

The one road I was hiking on just ends at one point, so I decided to bushwhack my way a little further north to the Lost Goldmine Trail. the bushwhack wasn't bad, but the high grass had me a little spooked since it's April and the snakes are out.

the last mile to the trailhead was where all the other hikers were. The Hiero Trail was pretty much a marching line. Lot was packed and a car was waiting on me to leave while I changed my shirt and shoes.

I did this hike 3 years ago with Deborah and I thot it would be a good one for us to do with Kelly. I haven't been out on Peralta Road for a very long time. I was surprised at all the miscellaneous camping the entire length of the road and the amount of vehicles at the Wave Cave TH. The Goldmine lot was nearly empty. Interestingly enough, we ran into two gals that took a wrong turn when hiking to the Cave. I told them about the Goldmine lot.

I had left my waist pack in my free rental car so I hiked with my water in a plastic sack; have never done that before. (Tonto 3 was having an engine oil leak fixed, which is running into day three now; they had to order a special part. Glad the repair is a warranty item.)

The hike started out humid and with sun. Luckily the clouds would slowly roll in. We could see virga and storms in the south distance. The desert is lovely this time of year but particularly impressive when you hike below the tall and beautiful grandeur of the Superstition Mountains with the glory of the many and tall saguaros all around. Sprinkle in some poppies and lupine and we had quite a show to enjoy as we made our way toward Turk's Head.

The trail is rocky here and there as it goes up and down for the entire four miles. There are a few sections you can glide on but not many. We spotted the usual landmarks including the Wave Cave where we could see and hear people. Eventually I spotted Mushroom Rock and we noted many other connector trails. As we got to the other side of Turks Head we saw two other hikers and as we were heading back we saw another. The hike back was as great as the hike in; except that we had filtered skies for the journey back, plus it tried to sputter some rain drops.

We were a little more than a mile away when a gal yelled down to us about some lipstick/chapstick she had put on a rock... yep, that was mine. I thot it had fallen out when we took a short break at Turks Head. I was glad she found it. And then she said they were watching a gila monster so we got to see it as it scurried into its hole above the trail. I didn't get a good picture as there were four hikers, so I couldn't get a good angle. Nonetheless, it was fun to see as I haven't seen one in quite a while.

I now had beer on my mind so I was glad we were almost done. There is a rock bench at the TH where we enjoyed our beer before heading to Los Gringos for an awesome lunch. I always enjoy hiking with the girls and this was a good one for me. It's nice to have good conversation and enjoy the beauty around you together. Plus, I'm sure glad I climbed Turks Head when I did as I don't know if I could do it now. It was a wonderful memory to remember from 2011 [ photoset ] (wow, did I use a lot of emojis in the trip report :o ).

My watch gave up the ghost after 6 miles so no full stats. But I did do over 20,000 steps today.

This is a fun and challenging hike, so I decided to do it before the winter hiking season comes to a close.

I got to the trailhead early, but there were already a few cars there.

There was lots of water in Hieroglyphic Canyon which was nice to see. I thought that there might be a bit of snow up on ridgeline, but it had all melted, even in shady places along the trail.

It was a really nice day for the hike -- sunny, cool, with a very light breeze.

It is always nice to be on the Supes Ridgeline, so this is a good hike to do every now and then.

This was somehow my first time up this canyon. Apparently, I have been missing out.

I started from the Broadway Trailhead at 7:30 in the morning. There were two parking spots left when I started. It was an absolute gorgeous desert morning and a pleasant stroll to the Canyon. Tough to beat that stretch of Sonoran desert, which I found myself appreciating even more when I thought about how much desert was lost to fire in recent years out there. The going up canyon was your standard boulder hop. I came across running water at nearly four miles on the dot form the trailhead and it was pretty much stunning from there. A spectacular set of falls that is enhanced by traces of those who came before us. This area was no doubt a special place for the early inhabitants of the Superstition Mountains and a millennium or more later its main attraction, water, is still drawing in visitors.

Schedules finally aligned to get a hike in with ishamod before the end of the year. I usually try to avoid repeats, but I hadn't been to 5057 in almost four years, so when he voted for this one, I was in. We started just before sunrise from Hieroglyphic Trailhead with a few vehicles arriving just as we pulled up. Two hikers were already heading back as we approached the petroglyphs, so we had that area to ourselves, and there were some small pools but no flowing water.

I'd forgotten how well-defined the route is up Hieroglyphic Canyon--there was practically a trail much of the way and a nice path cut through some of the brushier spots. There was a little water in the bottom of the canyon and a few trickles in places, and the spires and scenery were great on the way up. We were finally in sunshine once we got up on the ridgeline and worked our way over to 5057.

The summit register that was there a few years ago is gone, but I did notice one of the reference marks I hadn't spotted last time, kind of oddly placed on top of a rounded boulder. We got there just in time to have the peak to ourselves for a while and eat at the top, then a group of three was heading up from the Balanced Rock route, and another solo hiker beat them to the top as we were about to start down. As we got back on the ridgeline route, we saw another solo hiker heading up toward 5057. [ youtube video ]

We detoured over to Three Sisters on the way down and enjoyed the views. There must've been 20+ vehicles at the Wave Cave lot, even on a weekday. On the way back to the ridgeline we passed a group of four approaching Three Sisters, then saw two more hikers down near the Boulder Creek origin, where there were some larger pools.

After hiking down Carney Spring and detoured over to Shaka Cave before finishing off the loop. We'd seen quite a few hikers all day--probably 10+ groups or individuals along the loop--but it was relatively quiet around the Wave Cave, and we managed to complete that final stretch without anyone asking us for directions to the cave. That might be the first time I've set foot anywhere near that trail and not been asked at least once...I think we should win a prize. Over the last mile or two, five or six powered paragliders were flying around.

We kept a pretty leisurely pace all day and took a lot of breaks at various spots along the way, so we finished just before sunset, but it was nice getting back up to 5057 after a few years and great catching up with ishmod again and getting one more hike in before the end of the year.

:y:
I took the classic route up the Carney Spring trail to West Boulder Saddle. I started at the Peralta TH at 0745, taking the road walk to Lost Goldmine trail and then up to the saddle. I always think I'm ready for that uphill grind. I took a break at the false saddle, then another at West Boulder Saddle before continuing on.

Once at the Roost, I took a break, signed the register that I never noticed before, marveled at the natural funnel shape and wondered how much water flows through here during a monsoon downpour. I wouldn't want to be in there.

When I reached Fremont Saddle, I met a group calling themselves the "Lady's Hiking Club." When they saw me descend from the hoodoos west of the saddle, they asked if there were more hiking opportunities up there. Yes, I told them, and proceeded with a short run down of my hike today, along with a few other hikes available from Fremont Saddle.

After taking yet another break, this time to eat something, I decided that taking the Cave Trail back would not work today. I was done with uphill stuff, so I took the Peralta Trail back to the trailhead.

The Carney Spring trail was brushy but not prickly. Same with the route from WB Saddle to the Roost. Shorts and T-shirts are fine. The Peralta Trail was recently brushed and is looking good.

Wonderful hike. Streaky clouds with a bright blue sky, nice breeze through most of the hike. Gorgeous!

This morning's plan was to hike something easier in the Supes than this loop. I hadn't hiked for about a week, recovering from a debilitating :sk: Strep throat infection and also had to work some. :( On the early drive east, one of the US60 road signs was displaying AZ88 closed - rocks on the road. (perhaps it displays that always). I suppose we're not doing any hikes from the Canyon Lake area. As sunrise broke, one could see that the NW Supes were getting some action, lots of lightning and rain. I settled on the Hieroglyphic TH because I had my car. We chose CCW because the lightning was very active up on the ridgeline. Usually I'd complete this great hike at a brisker pace, but Dese and I had to shelter three times total, as each wave of rain rolled through with the accompanying and uncomfortably close lightning strikes. The final wave soaked us to the bone, but the sun emerged quickly afterwards. We dried out nearing the 5057 summit. It would of been nice to relax longer there, but swarming termite orgies just aren't my thing. On the descent, a large Coatimundi band crossed in front of us. There were at least three, small young ones (so cute) in the group and they all bristled orange. I've never been able to get a good pic of Coatimundi. Another large adult and one baby crossed behind us after we passed. They look like little monkeys easily scrambling the Supes' rocky terrain. This was a tough hike for Dese, but she powered through. She'll get a good rest this weekend because she isn't allowed to hike in the Grand.

I went back to this area to explore of the Summertime Trail. I started from the Carney Springs TH and tried to pick the most direct route to where that is, but it was still 3 miles before I got to it. I headed further east, but it actually heads more south and up the hill until it dumps you off on a dirt road that takes you back to Peralta Road. There were 2 more junctions with other trails that I found, but they were nearly a mile back and uphill again. I headed back up to Carney along Peralta Road until I found another dirt road and took that, hoping it would lead me to Carney. It just dead ended at the top of a hill, so I bushwhacked back to the Summertime Trail again and ended up deciding to go back to Peralta Road again after all to shorten up the hike and be done. I had forgot my usual snacks so I was getting hungry and grumpy. Along the road a pickup stopped and the driver asked me if I was DarthStiller. It was Ray Huston. Nice to meet you Ray.

2 miles in on my way to the Summertime exploration, there was a married couple on a dirt road at the top of a hill with a side by side and some telescopes. I asked them if they were hunting. They were scoping out for bighorn sheep for the hunting season in December. The guy then even pointed out one that he spotted and let me see it through his scope. Then he let me use his tripod for my camera so I could get a picture after he found it again. Very cool encounter, nice to talk to them and see all that. I was really surprised that there are bighorn sheep that far away from the lake where you normally see them. It was also very interesting how hard it is to spot them even when you're looking right at them from a distance.

Waited until Sunday to hike. I didn't see any other hikers or bikers on Lost Goldmine trail. There were a few people in the parking lot when I got back to the trailhead. Started just after 5am and finished before 8am. The temperature was about 77 at the start and upper 80's at the end. While there is a lot to see along this trail (Turks, Mushroom Rock, Cave of Nada, the Sisters, lots of Saguaros) the hike is still low key.

I hadn't hiked the Peralta Foothills trails in a while and with the hot weather this seemed like a good spot to hit. I was kind of hoping I might find some new trails that were built and I did. Around the Old Horse Trail on the south end there was a new trail that had a sign on it that said it's the Summertime Trail. That paralleled the Old Horse Trail and headed west. I took it for about a mile and then headed north when I found a trail junction. The trail still headed to the west so there's reason to go back and explore. I also saw what appeared to be new trails that head south from the LGT that are east of the Carney Springs road/trail from that TH.

Temps weren't bad at first and then got pretty hot as the sun got higher in the sky. Took my time and hiked a little slower than normal, still didn't finish my Camelbak bladder before I finished.

I needed a nice, flat and easy trail to meet my hiking hankering and this one always does the trick. Still dealing with my knee issue, but it's getting better. It looks like I will not need surgery, just continue the PT, keep exercising and avoid any crazy hikes (for now).

With the weather getting hotter, it's always a good idea to hit the Supes early. Jason and I did a early start and got in 5 miles, out and back. We started at the LGM East Trailhead. On the way in, we had to dodge a big trail of garbage some a**sholes dropped along Peralta Road right before the new Peralta Park. Looked like construction debris. Some people need to be tossed in to cholla patch....grrrr.

There was one vehicle in the parking lot and another one pulled in we were starting. We saw the two hikers from that truck as I plodded along at turtle speed. We did come across a younger couple right before the Carney Trail who took a wrong turn looking for the Wave Cave. We set them on the proper course.

No critters, except a few lizards, bunnies and birds. I have seen many snakes and a gila monster on this trail before, but they must have slept in and I missed them all this time around.

My knee was feeling it at the end, but it wasn't too bad the rest of the day. I am getting more optimistic about that.

This trail is easy, but it is also beautiful. The Three Sisters is the star of the show on this end of the trail. Such a cool formation.

5057 seemed like a good choice over doing Ord again. We started from Lost Goldmine in case we decided to return via Robbers Roost. Rising temps and time made for an easy decision to return the way we came once we got back to West Boulder Saddle.
The route has more side/spider trails than it used to, and most of them are cairned, making the trail tougher to follow. Things also look different now after the fire and all the growth following the winter rains.
The hike up is as I remembered. Work. Scenery is excellent though.
Descending was uneventful. The gnats were pesky the last couple miles, but fine if you keep moving.
Great to get back up on the ridgeline and the peak. Thanks Kelly. :)
