Got started from Area 7 around 0730 with Jill & Janelle. Took Waddell north. West on Ford Canyon. My favorite wall of dudleya is looking very dry.

At the end of Ford Canyon, continued south on Goat Camp, then the ridge up towards Barry Goldwater Peak. There were three guys ahead of us, and I chatted with them at the summit for a few minutes. They’re training for Rim to Rim. Had a snack break, then headed back down. Was almost chilly while walking the road. I survived in a shirt and shorts, but Jill looked like an Eskimo.

Retraced our steps back north to the Ford/Willow Canyon jct. East on Willow, short stop at the spring (bone dry) then continued east, Finished up on Mesquite to close out the loop.

Nice cloud cover and breeze most of the day. Easy mileage. I finally remembered to put a new hat in my truck, which I wore, but the stupid thing gave me some welt/blister across my forehead, which now looks awesome 🙄

After recently hiking in the San Tan Mountain Regional Park, I'd have to admit the White Tank Mountains are growing on me. The crappy traffic involved with accessing both areas is similar, but the White Tank Mountains (plural) has so much more to offer than the flat, uninspiring monotony of San Tan Mountain (singular). If you're a trail runner, mountain biker, or one of the Gilbert Moms, then STMRP is definitely for you. If you're a real hiker, the upper reaches of WTMRP are probably going to bring you more joy. We completed both summits in under 2h 15m, which was a slower than normal pace because of the pooch (but Dese was insistent on padding some stats and adding a few new peaks). We could have finished the complete lasso loop in under 5h total, but the day evolved nicely weatherwise, so we added on a few easy, quick out-and-backs of the [ South Trail - White Tank Mtns ] , [ Bajada Trail - White Tank Mtns ] and Old Stable Trails. I suppose [ White Tank Radio Smt via Verrado/Tower Rd ] is on the shortlist now. To all the nutrition waist channels who've left garbage in the summit register, don't fret, that trash has been hauled out. NGAF about your Singapore Tourist Pass discounts or that you wear Cinch Jeans.

First, I'd just like to point out that it's named White Tank (singular, (since been changed by Admin)), but no biggie, people like exaggerating the amounts of things and size sometimes. : wink : Secondly, had to get some work done today before packing for the next canyon trip, so busting pumpkin was the order of the day. Two hours to the summit and then the bonsai descent (as in harmony, inner peace and balance). I followed t_g's meandering 2013 route, not bad, but I'd rather hike almost any trail in the Supes, rather then trek in the White Tank again (mainly because of the longer drive, I may eat crow on this point). Finally, I thought it was appropriate to summit Goldwater Peak today, the day after the Republican's mostly lousy election performance. Although, yesterday wasn't quite as bad as Barry's 1964 loss...

We did a short hike to the Verrado Petroglyph site first thing in the morning [ triplog ] , then drove over to the regional park for this one. That meant a later start than usual, and we had to wait in a line of vehicles at the park entrance. I assumed White Tanks gets plenty of traffic on typical weekends and hoped we wouldn't be battling additional Super Bowl tourists staying in the west valley for the game tomorrow. I don't know what level of busyness constitutes "normal" here, but we were able to get a spot right near Waddell Trailhead in Area 7, so that was an encouraging start.

We hiked the loop clockwise, starting on Mesquite Trail. The first few miles had a steady incline and passed in a repetitious blur as were constantly trying to make our around groups of hikers, which was annoying but not unexpected. The traffic started to thin out past the Willow Canyon intersection and continued to improve from there. We were doing well time-wise, so we took Goat Camp Trail up to Barry Goldwater Peak. All the way up, and even from the peak, Radio Summit looks like it's higher than Goldwater, but judging <100 feet of elevation difference from that distance is tough. The views from the top are nice but mostly obstructed by the towers and utility buildings, so I didn't spend much time up there, and I didn't see the red jar with the summit register mentioned in the guide.

We returned on Goat Camp Trail and resumed the clockwise loop on Ford Canyon Trail. That was especially enjoyable once the trail dropped down into the creek bed and we got into the stretch with the white granite slabs and the tanks. I vaguely remembered hiking through there from the opposite direction one winter years ago when the tanks were mostly empty and partially frozen. There's some fun scrambling in that area, and we somehow missed one of the signs where the trail leaves the creek bed and bypasses the steep drop-offs in the canyon.

[ youtube video ]

A little past the missed turnoff, it immediately became more difficult to get around the pools, and we were facing some 20+ downclimbs that I certainly didn't remember going up last time...seemed like a bit much for an official trail in a regional park, and a quick look at the GPS confirmed we'd missed a turn a few hundred feet back. Ford Canyon was more impressive than I remembered, but I suppose I appreciated it more after a closer look at some the rougher sections.

After the canyon opened up again, the city came into view, and I could read the giant "Super Bowl LVII" sign on State Farm Stadium when I zoomed in. We eventually reconnected with Waddell Trail and finished off the loop around 5:30PM. Between this hike and Verrado Petroglyphs in the morning, we finished with ~20 miles for the day. Other than the first few miles on the loop, the crowds weren't too bad, and traffic wasn't especially bad on the drive home...we weren't sure what to expect the night before the Super Bowl. The weather was perfect today, in the mid-70s, and it was nice to get back to the White Tanks after a 5-6 year hiatus.

linda suggested barry goldwater peak for our hike today
we got going around 0800
a flock of seniors in the parking lot that we raced to get ahead of
cool temps but soon shed a layer going uphill
mesquite to goat camp, then the off trail and road to the summit
i don't remember the use trail being so wide, clear and easy to follow
windy at the summit
had snacks and enjoyed the views of surrounding mountains
two guys up top "working" = stranger danger
back down and then north to ford canyon
usually go up, this was just the second time i've descended
one little downslide to avoid water
finished up on waddell
a peak and a solid hike in a park i don't visit very often
good choice linda, very enjoyable hike

Kelly threw out some suggestions for hiking. This one stuck. Hard to believe I have not hiked in the White Tanks in almost a decade. There is no exit off the 303 for Olive, so we drove another mile north and looped back to get into the park.
We got started a little before sunrise to cool temps. The Mesquite Canyon trail has a nice grade as you ascend. It is never very steep. The use trail off of Goat Camp towards the peak is steeper and rockier. The trail is pretty easy to follow and is cairned. After a while the trail dumps out onto the road to the peak.
Once we neared our destination the wind picked up and was blowing ~30 mph on the summit. We hid behind a building, had a snack, and departed for warmer hiking lower down the mountain.
The return trip was nice. Trails are in good shape. We only ran into a few people until the last couple miles. Good times. Thanks Kelly. :)

we threw out some ideas for today and john picked white tanks
i hadn't been out there in four years :o
we decided on barry goldwater peak via mesquite and got going around 0640
very windy when we got up on the peak; didn't stay long
returned via willow canyon
saw just a few people until near the finish
good temps, some high clouds and a nice breeze
almost ran out of gas leaving the park, then got caught in traffic where I-10 was closed at 43rd ave. : rambo :
had time for ranch market burritos before cardinals kickoff, so all is well :)
nice to do something kind of different - i've always liked the white tanks
good times, thanks john!

Got started from the #7 parking area just before 0700. North on Waddell Trail, which is generally flat and boring. Headed up Ford Canyon, which is really the best part of the entire hike. No water at all in Ford Canyon, which made for easier travel, although I still prefer to see water in this canyon.

Once at the junction with Goat Camp, we took that south to the turn to Barry Goldwater Peak. The route along the ridge is clearly defined, then the road portion to the summit is the steepest part of the hike. Some haze, but nice views in all directions. You really can see a huge part of the state from this summit.

Easy hike back down, taking Goat Camp back north to Willow Canyon. Quick stop at the spring, which sadly was dry. I miss the days when I could swim in the pool at the base of the waterfall. Right now, it’s just sand. After that, we continued down Willow, then Mesquite Canyon, back to the parking lot. Lots of people on the last 2-3 miles, which I expected, but the park was not as full as a typical winter weekend.

Nice day, with good temps. Very little breeze though, and not a single cloud in the sky.

When I lived in the West Valley, I used to hit up the White Tanks more often. Glad to get back out there again.

A 7am start and a pleasantly cool, clear morning. We saw four doe near the TH that could care less that we were there.

Mule Deer Trail was a good warm up. Good trail and an easy grade while the sun was rising.

Bajada (buh·haa·duh) Trail was easy peazy and pleasant once Joe's stalker left us.

Goat Camp has never been my favorite. Maybe because it's been warmer in the past when I've done it. A nice climb with good views today. We saw 4 more deer here. There's only one section of ankle busters on the way up. I took Joe up a wash the took us to the road to Goldwater Peak. From here we hit up the ridgeline use trail back down to Goat Camp. Once again, no goats we seen today.

After lunch, a wrong turn and a run in twice with the twins, we headed down on Ford Canyon Trail. This my favorite in the White Tanks, Interesting geology, some easy scrambling and great views. This is also where we saw most of the people on the day.

Good times

Expectations for Mule Deer Trail were ultra-low on the foothill location. Odds of enjoyment bottomed out upon visual realization... 50 acres torched by a wildfire earlier this year on May 21st. Turned out to be a pleasant surprise on a relaxing sunrise stroll with cool views, friendly fellow hikers, one-stalker, and a delightful tread to boot.

The Bajada Trail was considerably nicer than anticipated too. Nice washes, trees, saguaros... then again, it was morning light laced with cool jazz temps, so let's not get carried away. Bruce corrected my rookie Okie fumble pronouncing bajada. I appreciate it in hindsight, flipped my frown, and added a helper to the top of the related guide pages for the next guy.

Heading up Goat Camp Trail is a medium never-let-up grade. Cool massive boulders in an intriguing pocket of Sonoran love is cool being so close to the city. Tread in the upper reaches is y-bar ankle busters, so it's likely deemed horrible by some on the surface. No biggie ascending. Total misnomer, we did not observe any goats camping or any goats period... alas.

Goat Canyon had me at hello, views casting from upper Goat seals my four-of-five ranking for Goat Camp Trail. An abundance of dry grass in the entire range is an unavoidable nail in the Sonoran coffin, so enjoy before forever changed.

Bruce re-suggested Barry Goldwater Peak. With time and resources, it seemed worthy. We settled on halfway, saving the elusive western views for another day. Instead, we admired the 270-degree views from the old purple-dashed jeep trail on topo. That musta been one gnarly pioneer ride.

We set 3032 as the target for a lunch break but mutually settled on a nearby unofficial 2974 sub-highpoint. Back on trail we crossed paths with Betty Boop and company, took a wrong turn, and passed Betty backtracking.

I sincerely enjoyed all of the above. That said, the dryfall in Ford Canyon is the most spectacular impact most will remember.

Despite rare visits for such a nearby option, the White Tanks never disappoint.

Did a counterclockwise Ford Canyon/Goat Camp loop with Barry Goldwater Peak the halfway and high point. Started at 6:30 in the dark on Waddell after parking between areas 8 and 9 near Ford Canyon.

Watched the sun rise on Waddell. Good visibility early, could see as far as Four Peaks, but it didn't last.

Saw four javelina on Ford Canyon around the dam. Just about no water in any of the tanks.

No human tracks in the wash between Goat Camp and the access road, and no tracks on the road for that matter. Didn't read the register, but I doubt many recent visitors. Very hazy toward Phoenix, couldn't really see past Piestewa Peak/Camelback. Darker on the other sides of the peak because of heavy cloud cover.

Saw a truck coming down from the Radio Summit, and it parked on the saddle below and watched me walk back down the road. First person I saw on the day until about half way down Goat Camp. Few people lower on the trail.

Goat Camp to Bajada to Mule Deer to Mesquite, and I was wishing I would have parked farther from Ford Canyon and gotten this stretch of the hike over with in the dark. Lots of car noise, and there were a dozen pairs of fighter jets buzzing around. Saw around 15 people on those trails.

If/when I do this one again I think I'd add the Radio Summit. Seems not too far out of the way from Goat Camp after it passes below the peak and a pretty straightforward bushwhack up the ridge.

Took advantage of a day off to get a hike in at the White Tanks. With the recent storm system I thought it would be a good idea to get some elevation and enjoy some crystal clear views. Got started a little after 10:30 from the Waddell TH. Did a simple in and out involving the Mesquite, Goat Camp and Barry Goldwater Peak. The weather was gorgeous which meant that the trails were busy. Passed over 30 people going in and about half that number coming out. Managed to jog up to the BG turn off (1:17 minutes, a little over 5 miles in), hiked the BG portion and then jogged the GC and Mesquite back down. For the most part trails were in good shape. The Mesquite was a 2-lane highway to the top. The Goat Camp a solid single track, but with growth pushing in from both sides. The turn off for the Barry Goldwater was overgrown, but once I found the track it was easy enough to stay on it. Met bikers in all areas of the park, even on the BG, which surprised me. Was even more surprised when I got to the top and met a worker (he drove a truck, so he cheated) installing 5G tech in the towers. 5G is coming baby :y: .....now I just need to get a phone  Since he was working in the area, I didn't want to look too hard for a register, so I didn't get to sign in with my visit :( . No wildlife today except for some lizards and a chipmunk.

Started from the Ramada 7 area around 7am. Went north on Waddell to Ford Canyon, then up Ford. Muddy trail, lots of wildflowers. There was a good amount of water flowing in Ford Canyon, but it was pretty easy to keep our shoes dry. One bypass around some big pools, but that was it. Started seeing snow along the trail once we were on Goat Camp, then more snow along the ridge between Goat Camp and the service road. No human prints or tire tracks in the snow on the road, but a lot of animal prints. It was windy at the top of Barry Goldwater Peak, so we took some pics and headed back down. Once back to Goat Camp, we headed back north to Willow Canyon and took that easy. There was a nice amount of water at the spring, and one little patch of snow. Continued east to Mesquite Canyon and then took that back to the parking lot. Saw no one on Ford Canyon, a few people on Goat Camp, more people on Willow, and a ton of people on Mesquite. The parking lot was packed when we finished, and the Waterfall parking was a mob scene; I don't even want to think about how many people were packed onto that trail.

This was a pleasant little hike with the pups today. I had been meaning to do the peak since the White Tanks popped up on my radar in the spring and today proved a good day to do it.

We got an early start and the temps were cool most of the day and the trails were fast and nice for the most part. It wasn’t the best day for views and the White Tanks are a little drab right now, but I still enjoyed the relatively close to home alternative. A good way to pad some stats and a add a peak late in the year (those things are important to Blanco). Overall it was a nice day and a decent hike, you could say it was a Barry Merry Christmas..🎄🎁

Sometimes you can't sleepy and borrow your sisters car to go somewhere pretty.
Parked in number 7 and headed up Mesquite Cyn trail pretty quick.
Saw a familiar junction and ended up bagging Barry Goldwater, I'm okay with that.
Went "down the other side" ran into 3 big puppies off leash so I went back the way I came to avoid the owners who I assume weren't far behind.
Back to Goat Camp jct then up Ford to make a loop out of it, came upon Waddell and opted to take that back to the parking lot.

Well. That was fun. Lots of birds out, redtails, a bat in the parking lot when I got there. Saw some fat quails, are they even supposed to be out when it's this cold?

Which by the way today was surprisingly warm. For January...

Fun loop, think I miss a trail connection in my links but forgot what it was

We went up Mesquite and down Ford from the staging area so no Waddell on this trip. JJ turned it down a notch but kept a good pace for me. Great temps, hike, and conversation on the way up. Good to catch up. On the way down JJ set a time for the tacos so we picked it up and made it ahead of schedule :) . Good times. :y:

Big D and I had some hiking to do out in the White Tanks. We chose to do a Mesquite-Ford Canyon Loop and add in Goldwater Peak for good measure. We started our hike at 7:30am. Had perfect weather all day. Up on Goldwater we thumbed through the pages of the register and saw many familiar HAZ peeps. Included were Patrick L (as recent as yesterday :o ) Bruce the Eagle, Joey Gumdrop, and Dr. Frickincrazy.

After the hike we headed over to El Guerro Canelo for some Mesquite cooked carne asada tacos. Seemed fitting. Good times and good tacos!

1st trip
Return visit a long time in the making. I had hiked to Barry Goldwater with my brother in law a little over 4 years ago, and I have wanted to do it again ever since. Make it a double peak day, and I am in. I managed to shave almost an hour and change off the previous time, and added in the extra peak. Thanks to trekkin gekko for the track idea, the tower road walk in between made logistics work out nicely. I got an 8:30 start in the morning, chilly but not too bad. Goat Camp is good trail, but gets pretty relentless from mile 1-3 or so. I saw a group of 6 white tail cross the trail about 50-60 feet ahead of me right before the Radio spur, Awesome start to a great hike. I had a head down moment and plowed past the turn off for the Radio Summit, but did not get too far down the trail before I realized my mistake. First time up the Radio Summit, the spur trail is pretty easy to follow. It does get a little thin in spots, but since you are heading up a ridgeline to a bunch of looming towers, it is hard to get too far off track. Took a short break at the top and then headed down the tower road for Barry Goldwater. Nothing like dropping 800' just to gain it right back again. Big machinery up by the top, looks like there will be some construction in the near future. Took a few minutes to thumb through the summit register, saw lots of familiar names in here. Great to see so many of my HAZ brothers and sisters representing. Looks like I just missed the Eagle and Ray Huston by a day! Took another break for some views and headed on down to the connector trail. I stopped a little ways down for a PB sandwich and some Gatorade, and then powered my way out. I saw about a dozen hikers today, but they were all within 2 miles of the trailhead. All Rush on the playlist today, Fly by Night, Signals, Caress of Steel (my personal favorite), 2112, Exit Stage Left. Been listening to more Rush this week after hearing Neil Peart is officially hanging up the sticks, sad days for the rock world. So glad I got to see them one last time on the R40 tour...

Took a white Tanks Newbie out for a sampling of the area.

Brisk Morning turned to cold late morning when we lost the sun and the wind picked up. Ford Canyon is still my favorite up there. I also enjoy the Willow Spring area, especially above the spring.

We headed out Goat Camp and then the cairned short cut up to Barry Goldwater Peak. We had some lunch up top. It looks like they're getting ready for some kind of construction up there. A large pallet filled with Concrete sits up top.

A Video tour of Barry Goldwater Peak = :next: https://youtu.be/R3 ... zlX8

Not as many out as I expected to see. Great Hiking w/ Ray again.

1st trip
My first trip to the White Tank Mountains Regional Park. I've heard many good things about it but haven't made it out that way until now. This was a very enjoyable loop. Excellent trails, beautiful scenery and a chance to soar with an eagle. Well, Bruce soars, I just try to keep up!

I got a ping from Bruce earlier in the week. We hadn't hiked together in a few moons, so I jumped at the chance. Bruce needed to be home early for a holiday party so I suggested this loop in the White Tanks, thinking that might get us done soon enough. Bruce suggested adding Barry Goldwater peak, an extra 5 miles and 1200 feet. Barry Goldwater is my oldest memory of presidential elections. At 7 years old, I was already into politics, urging my mother to vote for Barry. She voted for Johnson. We still have those same conversations (arguments?) today, but I digress.

I agreed to the side trip to BG because I needed the workout. Bruce kicked my :pk: up the hill (he called it "life coaching") whereupon we took a delightful break under a warm sun. The previous few miles had been uphill against a bone chilling wind that was doing its best to beat us back down. The break at the top under sunny skies with a wind break at our backs was simply wonderful.

We made good time on the way back. The excellent trails in this park allowed us to let gravity pull us down the mountain. Neither of us had spare batteries so we were also racing to get back before the Garmins died. I think we made it just in time. It was a cold and windy day in the White Tanks, for much of the route, anyway, but it was still a fun hike with great company. Good to see you again, Bruce!
