Was invited to join some friends for a weekend in Chiracahua National Monument. Left the valley, nervously checking and refreshing the weather report, which had been calling for rain for the evening and following day. It seems my luck held out with regards to the weather - while we saw some rain activity from the clouds on the drive, we arrived to scattered clouds and slightly damp ground in the campground. We set up camp under the supervision of a group of mexican jays and relaxed for a bit before prepping dinner. Stayed up late to look at the sky and try to take some nighttime photos. May have heard some coati, but didn't get an actual sighting.

Originally, I had planned on a potential solo hike stringing together nearly all of the established trails in the park from the campground. One of my friends expressed interest in joining me, but wasn't up for the full distance, and also is not an early riser. Another friend in the group offered to ferry us up to Massai Point, allowing us to trim the mileage and hike mostly downhill back to the campground.

Got up early to the sounds of the mexican jays making the rounds, hoping to mooch some breakfast treats. Saw some white-tailed deer wandering nearby while most of the others in the campground were still sleeping. Eventually made it up to Massai Point to start our hike. The parking area had a number of cars and a decent number of folk milling about. Opted to walk the Nature Trail and enjoy the interpretive signs and exhibit building before doubling back to start down the Ed Riggs Trail. Once we started heading down the trail, we lost most of the other traffic. The walking was slow going with all the beautiful views. Many photos were taken, but few were able to capture the landscape well. If it wasn't photos of the landscape, it was photos of wildflowers slowing me down 😆 thanks to the recent moisture, there were also plenty of mushrooms to photograph in the latter portion of the hike. We had a brief scare when we stumbled across a danger noodle mid-brunch trailside. We gave it as much space as we could as we skirted by, and warned a few returning groups of hikers to be aware as we crossed paths.

As you might expect, the trails are very well established and clearly signed. I was surprised to hear and see water flowing in the drainages along the upper reaches of the hike since there wasn't any observable water in the watercourses near the visitors center or campground. We managed to startle a white-tailed deer as we crossed Hunt Canyon on the Mushroom Rock trail on our way towards Inspiration Point. Sadly, all I got was a very heavily obscured photo of a deer butt as it headed into the shrubs along the creekside.

After checking the time, we decided to head out to inspiration point, where we enjoyed watching a kettle of turkey vultures playing in the thermals while we took a break and had a snack before continuing on to the Big Balanced Rock Trail and the Heart of Rocks Loop. After slowing considerably going through the Heart of Rocks area, we attempted to pick up our pace along the Sarah Deming Trail, but were thwarted by numerous varieties of mushrooms. We eventually hit the Lower Rhyolite trail, enjoyed the sunset, and broke out our headlamps to finish the last bit of the descent to the visitors center where we took a brief break to use the facilities before heading back to camp.

After cleaning up and enjoying dinner, me and my hiking partner for the day decided to head back up to Massai Point for some more night-sky viewing. We were the only ones up there and arrived just in time to catch the moon heading fast for the horizon. We were able to catch some photos of the milky way (I wish I had brought a proper camera), in addition to some distant lightning. As we started getting chilled from the dropping nighttime temps, we headed back to camp - catching sight of a ringtail along the way (unfortunately, I didn't have the presence of mind to try to catch a photo of it).

It was a fantastic day, with plenty of puffy clouds in the sky that cleared out for a great night of stargazing.

Other people: only had one person (a trail runner) lap us, but we also had a ridiculously late start. All of the other groups (several) we encountered were returning to Massai Point on the Ed Riggs trail.

The Bonita Campground restrooms were undergoing repair/construction when we visited - original completion date was estimated to be October 1st, but with ongoing shutdown the closure has been extended to an unknown date. Portable toilets and handwashing stations were available, and at the time of our visit, the toilets were pumped out and cleaned on Monday morning. The visitors center restrooms remained open and available during our stay - it's a relatively quick walk between the campground and the visitors center via the Silver Spur Meadow Trail or via the road. During daylight hours, I walked the trail - after dark, I opted to walk the road for easier footing.

Camping trip to the Chiricahua National Monument. This hike is similar to one Kelly and I did 11 years ago. I added on the Hailstone trail and got some extra credit on the Heart of Rocks trail.
I started from the Bonita Canyon campground trail to the visitor center then up Lower Rhyolite. I made a big loop higher up taking in most all the trails.
Lots of stopping and gawking and picture taking. Many very cool sights. Highly recommended.
Only saw three people all day. One hiker from campsite #21 and two others near the visitor center.
Besides my achilles barking, a great day! :)

1st trip
Day three of four in SE AZ.
This, our first hike on our second day in the Chiricahua National Monument, will be the longest in mileage and time as well as the most AEG of all 6 hikes we will do on this trip to SE AZ. While it was expected to require the most effort, in the end it didn't feel like it at all. And even for the effort we put forth, it returned a very enjoyable hike including a wider variety of scenery than we'd encountered in the Chiricahua or Dragoon Mountains.

We had such an easy descent the first half-mile down Echo Canyon I didn't experience the usual hip joint pain and by time we hit the steeper descent I had loosened up enough as long as I was careful on the larger step-downs things went well.

Just past the grottoes we caught up to a recently retired couple from South Carolina taking their first trip to AZ in years, and possibly thinking about moving 'back here' as they were originally from Arizona and moved to SC some 2 dozen years ago. Once the pleasantries were exchanged we moved on.

When we reached the sign denoting 'Echo Canyon' (at the confluence of Sarah Deming, Rhyolite and Echo Canyons) I loudly yelled 'Hello' which got a quick response from Tracey of 'what are you yelling for?' To which I responded, what is the point of an echo canyon if one doesn't take advantage of it... at least to verify it is worthy of the name.

Moving on, after 'turning the corner' we headed up Upper Rhyolite Canyon, connecting with the Hailstone Trail which we will follow until the junction with Ed Riggs and Mushroom Rock Trails. At that point we continued up Mushroom Rock Trail until reaching the Mushroom Rock, Inspiration Point and Big Balanced Rock Trails junction. From there we did a round-trip to Inspiration Point... which was a slight let-down in more ways than one. First, after experiencing so much of the park already no particular 'inspiration' came to mind. Second, due to all the rock spires there was no single point where one could see directly down into the canyons below. Sure one could look ACROSS the canyons, of which the views were scenic.

Once back on the Mushroom Rock Trail we had a reasonably easy descent in preparation for the steep ascent up Ed Riggs Trail to our planned turn at the Massai Point Trail. Once we reached that junction, we took a few moments to decide whether to head over to Massai Point or continue up to the Echo Canyon trailhead. Thinking the route to Massai Point was a simple 'around the contour' we chose it. And then of course it turned out to be a 200' climb to the Exhibit Building.

At the Exhibit Building we took the time to read all the various panels covering geological and human history.

Decision time again:
#1. Back DOWN Massai Trail to experience the steep ascent up the end of Ed Riggs Trail to Echo Canyon TH.
#2. Short road-walk to Echo Canyon TH.
Since we were about to eat lunch at the car before tackling Sugarloaf Mountain, it was an easy decision... we've had enough AEG for this hike so we went with #2.

Truck camped at Bonita Canyon CG for an early start. Fun loop with enough challenge to be interesting. Trails are in great shape. Awesome views of course. Had to skip the Heart of Rocks loop due to time constraints. Next time!

Letting the others take the lead, the plan was the Chiricahua Big Loop. First time back here since the Boulder Dash 30k (before they realized they're not legally allowed to permit such an event), had more time to explore some of the interesting rock formations since it wasn't a race this time. Echo Canyon and Heart of Rocks are my favorites. Inspiration Point was new to me, but I wasn't super inspired if I'm being honest. Perfect weather, just a tad chilly when we stopped for more than a few minutes.

The shuttle service is back up and running, the trails are now free of ice and the rock slides have been cleaned up ... time for a hoodoo hike!
Shuttle picked us up at Faraway Ranch, picked up 8 more at the campground and drove us all up to Massai Point for the hike back down to Faraway Ranch.
Sunny clear blue skies with a slight breeze all the way down.
Such an amazing place throughout with Inspiration Point & Heart of Rocks the 2 big highlights.
Wildlife spotted - 10 white tail deer, 20 turkey, 1 coati, several hawks and Mexican jays.
Solid hike, solid partner.
I sure hope this place does NOT get National Park status ... I like it just the way it is!

I did this hike as a figure 8, starting down the Echo Canyon part thru the grottoes. I added in the Hailstone Trail and the Inspiration Point Trail. Clouds were prominent all around so I checked my weather app again since I had a signal at the TH and it said the closest lightning was 400+ miles away. :y:

the views from Inspiration Point live up to the name. Very nice. Signed into the book in the ammo box there. Checked the weather app again and lighting was 200+ miles away.

Headed down Sarah Deming Trail, hiking a section of the trail that I did with my family 5 years earlier almost to the day. Odd thinking how they've grown up so much just in the last 5 years since then.

the hike back up to the trailhead from the low point wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The hike up Mushroom Rock Trail seemed more strenous thinking back. Hiking Hailstone the 2nd time around the lighting was better since the sun was out. I slowed my pace at that point since I felt like I could relax and also because I was pretty tired. The hike up to the trailhead from the next turnoff was also not as nearly as bad as I was afraid it might be.

Right as I got to my car, the rain started to hit. it was only a trickle and died out after a bit. But then the lightning and thunder started. I was very happy at that point that I avoided all of that. On my way out, I could see that a thundercloud had hit the area near Chiricahua Peak. Very glad we didn't do that hike this weekend.

The Chiricahua Shuttle isn't actually operating...but the Happy Wife Express offered luxury class service from Bonita Canyon Campground to Echo Canyon TH. I did the side trails to Inspiration Point and through the Heart of Rocks, both definitely worth it, and was back at the CG in time for lunch.

Ginny and I took a three day Trip to the Chiricahua Mountains, since Ginny had never been we made the first day a hike in Chiricahua National Monument. We did a loop using the Mushroom, Big Balanced Rock, Sarah Deming and Echo Canyon Trails. This area never ceases to amaze me. There was only one other vehicle in the park when we arrived not counting the one park vehicle which was empty. We encountered a few other people later in the day but for the most part the park was empty. Didn't see any masks all day but a couple of people we did see would get to the side of the trail and turn away and look down when you passed by them. So sad that people are so afraid.

Trails in the monument are in excellent condition unlike many of the trails in the Chiricahua Mountains. The only downside to the trails are the numerous steps which take a toll on your legs and thighs by the end of the day. Don't know how else you would make a trail that has a lot of elevation change and control erosion without them though. Install escalators? The Big Balanced rock Trail is about the only fairly level Trail. Took two side trips from the loop the first being Inspiration Point and the other the Heart Of Rocks Trail. Both these trails are a must do if you are on the loop. If I was a kid again (my age not the way I act) I would of loved to have the Heart of Rocks as my back yard, my mother never would of found me. I would also like to know what glue they use to keep Big Balanced Rock, Mushroom Rock and Pinnacle Balanced Rock in place, They should not be standing. I chose going in the clockwise direction because the Echo Canyon Trail is so impressive and would keep our minds off of how tired we were. Views from Inspiration Point were good but the atmosphere was a bit hazy so you had to use your imagination to see the Rincon Mountains and Santa Rita Mountains.

There was a scant amount of water in places along the creeks but not as much as I would of expected. The weather was in the low 50's starting out at 0830 and in the upper 70's by end of the day. We finished around 3 in the afternoon and headed over the Chiricahua's where we would spend the night at Portal Lodge. The road over the mountain was in good shape and only one other car on it when we went through.

Trail temp was @ 39F at the start. I did the Big Loop for my cold weather training™. I wasn't able to get out as much as I hoped in the mountains this winter, so I was not sure what my cold tolerance was. It wasn't too bad. I did the loop in my winter shorts and shoes. I was hoping that it would snow here, but it didn't. Snow covered the southern Chiricahuas but missed the monument.

I passed 29 people on the loop. Only one asked if I were cold. She stated that she was wearing 4 layers including a thick coat and a hooded sweater.

The sun shined at the end of the hike. The trail temp at the end was @46F, so it really never warmed up. People were friendly. The hike and being exposed to the cold was not too challenging, but it was still a good hike.

Drove over from the east side on FR 42 to the nearly deserted national monument. Clockwise around the loop with side hikes to Inspiration and Heart of Rocks. Fantastic!

On the way out the ranger was closing the gate at the entrance station - cars were no longer allowed in, but road walking or biking in is still allowed (2 miles to the visitor center).

1st trip
Monday we hiked the Chiricahua National Monument big loop and my first time hiking in the monument. Starting from Rhyolite at the visitor center it’s 1.5 miles to the first junction where we took the Sarah Deming Trail up to Heart of Rocks Loop. The loop was fantastic and exceeded my expectations based on what I knew about the area. If we were not doing the big loop we could have spent several hours exploring this area. As it was we still took 1 hour to do the 1 mile loop and see everything we wanted to check out.

From there we moved on to Inspiration Point and lunch. The point is great but after leaving Heart of Rock area there is not as many cool rocks. At the point we could see almost the entire park, Massai Point across the way and cool rocks that line the main canyon.

After lunch we hiked down the Mushroom Rock Trail to the main canyon. This was another nice stretch of trail over to Echo Canyon which traverses below some cool spires and also views of the hoodoos on the other side of the canyon.

At the Echo Canyon junction we hiked uphill into Echo which was on par with Heart of Rocks. I would say that Echo and Heart of Rocks are the must see sections of the monument. When we do this again I’d probably spend 1 day in the Echo Canyon side and 1 day on the Heart of Rocks side because there is so much to see. We spent another hour in Echo on a ¾ mile section that was very scenic.

We headed back down Echo and continued to Rhyolite Canyon back out the same trail finishing the loop at the visitors center. Great hike with so much to see in such a small area. Will definitely be back for another exploration. Would be awesome to see this place with several inches of snow :)

First time to the Chiricahua National Monument, so I took the loop counterclockwise plus a trip to inspiration point and a hike afterward up Sugarloaf Mountain.

Heart of Rocks Loop was the highlight of the trip, Though Echo Canyon is also incredible. Echo Park was burned but still enjoyable, and the SE corner of the hike around Big Balanced Rock Trail and Inspiration Point is burned as well. On the plus side, the views are expansive on this side of the loop because of the elevation and lack of trees. Inspiration Point is a nice side trip with little elevation gain. Riggs Trail was chewed up but was being worked on. The trails were so nicely maintained, you could forget you're in the wilderness.

Sugarloaf Mountain was better than I expected, and it made more sense to add it on after I had finished with the loop; the trailhead is close by, it's short, and it doesn't take long for the payoff. Lookout was closed.

Passed only two hikers on the trail all day, and when I got back to the car there were under a half dozen cars in the Echo Canyon lot.

I have lived in Tucson for about 60 years and have never been to Chiricahua National Monument. Better late then never I guess. On My way back from Texas and New Mexico I stopped in Wilcox for the night and would hike the monument in the morning. I had 20 miles of hikes planned to hike most of the trails in the park. I only got 12 miles done because I took too much time gawking at all the scenery. Oh well this will give me reason to come back.

The trails are in excellent condition, the weather was perfect (no wind) and only a few people and most were in the parking area. I believe I saw 3 on the trails. The only trails I didn't get to were the lower Rhyolite Canyon Trail, Sugar loaf Trail and Natural Bridge Trail. This is one of those places that I will have to come back to when the weather is different, Monsoon, snow, very early morning or evening. The photo opportunities are endless. My favorite trails were Echo Canyon Trail and Heart of Rocks Trail, I could of spent a lot more time on those sections.

This is a very neat hike and one that is worthwhile to check out. We did the Big Loop counterclockwise, and also did the Heart of Rocks Loop and the spur trail to Inspiration Point. My favorite part of the hike was seeing the grottoes, but the Heart of Rocks Loop was a close second. Inspiration Point is well worth checking out as well.

Today was my 50th birthday. I decided to celebrate alone with a camping trip to Wilcox and hike I was supposed to do this time last year in Chiricahua NM. I planned on doing the Big Loop clockwise from Echo Canyon trail head. It was really cold yet at 6:15. It appeared that I had the whole park all to myself. Took the side trail out to Inspiration Point, which was well worth the trip. Then on to the Heart of Rocks loop where I ran into the first other hikers for the day. I wasn't feeling particularly well this morning, so I decided that instead of completing the loop, that I just return the way I came. Ran into some boy scouts out on a training hike. Missed the turn off for the parking area and started down the Echo Canyon trail. I enjoyed the views for a bit and then turned back to the truck.

1st trip
After 12 years as an Arizonan, this hike marked my first visit ever to Chiricahua National Monument. I can't believe I waited so long. The weather was perfect; not a cloud in the sky, cool and breezy.

I call this route an alternate because the official Big Loop begins up at Echo Canyon TH and utilizes different trails. To avoid having to deal with park shuttle, I hiked from camp at Bonita Canyon Campground (that trip will be covered elsewhere) to pick up the Lower Rhyolite Canyon TH near the visitor's center.

The trails are in great condition. As a monument of a different sort to the engineering and construction prowess of CCC crews, I marveled at the crazy waterchecks, rock cribs and other stonework that ensure the trail system will remain in place for generations to come. For better or worse, we don't make trails like these anymore.

Heart of Rocks is not to be missed. Inspiration Point I found to be more stunning than inspiring; that's just me. The view is spectacular. This is one of only two points along my entire route where I encountered other hikers.

Due to capture error, linked route is 1.5 miles less than actual. True distance is included here.
