This was 4th hike in as many days on spring break with George. I worked the morning so was best I could do for something short and before rain came. We did an old loop that they loved as toddlers. Jane Rau loop to Latigo Trail then cross the road up to Sunset Spur trail and then down the hill to the parking lot. George remembers little bits of those baby hikes and definitely remembered the Sonoran Sunday teaching once at the Amphitheater where the game and fish person was bitten by the snake she was holding. Flowers were sparse this day. Clouds were cool.

Great morning run in the preserve, one of my favorite things to do in all of Phoenix!

Saw my first diamondback of the season on Rustler.

Radmila wanted to take the kids out for a hike before they head back to school this week. I noticed that there's a section on the east end of the Latigo Trail that I never hiked before. I thought that maybe it was recently built, but when we got there the sign for where it leads to looked pretty faded.

From the Brown's Ranch TH, we headed south to the Latigo Trail, and then took the unnamed spur trail that goes to the entrance gate, then got back on the Latigo. We did a loop of the Latigo, Whiskey Bottle, and Chuckwagon Trails. I've never done the Jane Rau Trail, so it was the perfect trail to do at the end to add a little bit of mileage. It's very well built and has the usual informative signs about the desert flora. Finished up just under 6 miles for the day. We got done very quickly, and I even felt like doing another mile or 3, but I didn't want to push it. The kids are ok once they get going, but the 6:30am wakeup calls in the winter don't thrill them very much.

After Windgate wind down. Drove over to Brown Ranck TH after doing Windgate to knock out this short trail. I would never drive all the way from the west valley just for this trail, but since I was in the neighborhood.... Short, paved trail, just east of the restrooms. Nice, surprisingly removed from the hustle and bustle of the TH. Kind of like a "desert cove." Rock formations and desert foliage decorate the landscape for the eye. Nice, encapsulated preview of what the rest of McDowell Sonoran Preserve offers. There is a connector trail that cuts across the front end of this trail and a couple of bridges that cross some washes in the loop section of the trail. As always, a well designed trail in the McDowell's.

Followed a route from The_Eagle from June '15. Super busy with lots of bikes due to some event from REI. The trails are super smooth and the miles sort of just melt away; even when you are sick. I had to talk myself into knocking out the Jane Rau trail at the end and almost stepped on a rattler while on it.

Needed to be alone with nature this morning. Weather was perfect. So decided to go to Brown's and parking lot was busy at 7am :) . Saw Brian aka SunRay as a pathfinder at TH helping people left and right as well as training a new steward :y: . Thanq for conversing with me Brian. Went to JaneRau and managed to wake up lot of butterflies including many pipevine swallowtails. Headed to Latigo and the whole place was loaded with birds. As the sun came up, it became butterfly wonderland. Didn't realize but Mexican bladder bush is a magnet for sulphurs. Got photos of green tailed towhees finally :y: . Saw a couple of flycatchers that I can't ID yet....but Walter, our bird expert is checking with another bird expert, Troy. Meanwhile had to finish my hike due to other commitments but would have wanted to spend all day there :) . Was thinking we should have picked this trail for our butterfly count
Got confirmation from Troy that these are brown crested flycatchers. My first :y:

Met Larry at the trailhead at 9am. Started on Hackamore, and made a large clockwise loop towards Brown's Mountain. At the spur trail to the top, Larry decided to wait while I went up there real quick. I headed up, looked around for a minute, then headed back down to the main trail. On my way down, there was a bicyclist carrying his bike to the top, he said he was going to ride back down and said it's his favorite part of the trail. I half jokingly told him to wait until I was done and off that part of trail so as to avoid becoming a speed bump for him. We headed back to the trailhead, then threw in the Jane Rau Trail for good measure. Nice day, but it sure did warm up quickly.

Family Sonoran Sunday at Brown's Ranch with the Conservancy. Kids always do nature trail before speaker starts. We have to get there early to help set up - gives them sometime to do. Speaker was SW Wildlife.

After the presentation Caroline and I did another mini hike from the amphitheatre area along Latigo to Hackamore and Sunset overlook and then down into parking lot. Fun little loop.

Brad and George went to a Sun's game together.

Did patrol hike today. Not very busy in the morning hours. Trails are in good shape despite recent rain. Pair of kestrels came to my eye level and followed me for a while. Lots of black throated sparrows and gnat catchers today. Nice to see cardinals back at the Th. Parking lot filled up by noon.

Started foot patrol around 8am. Morning was cloudy, windy and very pleasant. Hardly saw people or wildlife. Nice hike. Met few stewards on my way back.

Unfortunately due to morning commitments, couldn't get to TH until noon. Day was nice and toasty but hardly saw wildlife. Parking lot was full. Steady influx of people on cone mtn trail. Surprised me since I don't usually see that many people on CM trail. All dogs are on leash. Met another steward in the parking lot as I was leaving. Looking forward to a year of changes.
