Did the Whiskey Basin 91k on a tremendous saturday. Had nice clouds for a lot of the warmer part of the day. This route linked up a million trails and basically incorporated the entire Prescott Circle Trail around Prescott, starting and finishing at Watson Lake.

My plan was to jog whatever flat and downhill I could and just quickly hike the rest, since that is how I have been moving lately and I wanted to see if I could pull off an ultramarathon this way. It actually worked well and I had plenty of time to spare.

The route itself is beautiful mixing in high desert, juniper and pine country. Really spectacular.

I felt pretty good most of the time. Had some low back pain towards the end. The girls met me at mile 6 and 37 and that was truly a delight.

Did less than an hour at the end by headlamp and that was it. T shirt the whole time and the temps were perfect. Got hot a little in the middle section and got doused with ice water at mile 32 which was heavenly. it clouded up after that for what would have otherwise been the hottest and most exposed part so that was delightful

There are many loops possible in the Spence Basin (full of Ponderosa pine), starting from either the Iron Springs Trailhead or, like this one, from the Spence Springs Trailhead. The only trail at the Spence Springs Trailhead is Noodle Loop #760, but there are four trails onto which you can turn to start a loop. It had been a few years since I had hiked Tunnel Vision #714, so named because it passes through a (low and narrow) tunnel under Javelina Trail #332 where #332 follows the old Iron Springs Railway right-of-way. It had also been awhile since I had hiked Tatanka #735 and Zygomatic #761, so I took those and Missing Link to take Little Italy south, then west, then east, a direction that I have rarely hiked. This provided views of Granite Mountain and Thumb Butte, plus lots of rocky hillsides (see photo for example). I then returned to the trailhead via Javelina, Willow Creek #704, Willy Nilly Tractor #707 and the east side of Noodle Loop for a nearly 10-mile hike. There are way too many trails to include all in the name of this loop hike, so I have included parts of the names of four trails and combined parts of two more (Willow Creek and Willy Nilly Tractor) to form Willowy.

This "tadpole loop" starts at the Iron Springs Trailhead west of Prescott, AZ. The "tail" of the loop is the northern 3 miles or so of Javelina Trail #332, plus a few tenths of a mile of Willow Connector Trail #346 to the Cayuse equestrian parking lot. The loop consists of West Lake Trail #351 which starts at the north end of the Cayuse parking lot and ends at Balancing Rock Trail #349 at the south end of the lot. Balancing Rock Trail continues for less than a mile to the NNW, but this hike returns to the Cayuse parking lot by turning south on Balancing Rock Trail. For the 10.6 miles of this hike, return via Willow Connector Trail and Javelina Trail to the Iron Springs Trailhead. For about a 3 mile shorter tadpole loop, you can park where Javelina Trail crosses Granite Basin Road, or park in the Cayuse parking lot and just do the 4.5 mile loop formed by West Lake and Balancing Rock Trails.

A ten-mile loop clock-wise around Spence Springs Basin. The foliage was about as bright as it gets. There are mostly Ponderosa pines and Gambel oaks with a sprinkling of junipers and willows, aspens and (maybe) cottonwoods along Willow Creek, Spence Creek and some of the gullies. The Gambel oaks, willows and aspens or cottonwoods were near peak yellow.

Route starts and ends on Iron Springs Road about 0.1 mile east of the Spence Springs Trailhead for Noodle Loop Trail. The name of Vista Trail refers to the views of Prescott and Thumb Butte from the west end of the trail, near it's junction with Javelina Trail #332 a tenth of a mile from Iron Springs Trailhead. The east end of Vista Trail is a few tenths of a mile from the Spence Springs Trailhead along Noodle Loop Trail #760, the only trail at that trailhead.

Starts at the trailhead on Iron Springs Road west of Prescott and heads south on Javelina Trail #332 along the Iron Springs Railroad right-of-way for almost 2 miles which makes this an easy hike. When the right-of-way begins to turn north onto private property, the route returned to Javelina Trail #332 which passes the fireplace near the south fork of Willow Creek and the junction of Willow Creek Trail #704 and Firewater Trail #325 on the other side of the creek. The route continues along Javelina Trail as it follows the creek upstream and a little past the creek crossing. On April 8, 2023 the creek had the most water I've ever seen, but still easy to cross (see photos). The route returns on Javelina Trail to the parking lot for nearly 6 miles total. The last 2 miles, while not strenuous, are continuously uphill.

This loop starts south on Javelina Trail #332 from Iron Springs Trailhead. It uses all of Javelina Trail on the Iron Springs Railroad right-of-way, then stays on Trail #332 when it leaves the railroad right-of-way. After passing the fireplace, take Little Italy Trail #703 (may be no sign) west along the south bank of Willow Creek, then cross the creek and head east, northeast and northwest to the junction of Trail #703 and Missing Link Trail #724. Take Trail #724 west past Zygomatic Trail #724 to Russ T Fender Trail #728. It's less than 0.1 mile on Trail #728 to West Side Story Trail #725 which returns to the Iron Springs Trailhead. I wanted to go a little more than 8 miles, so this route takes Spence Creek Trail #719 back to Javelina Trail #332 and north to Vista Trail #706. Vista Trail is well-named with views of Granite Mountain (near Williamson Valley Road), Thumb Butte and the Spence Creek Basin. This route goes out and back on Trail #706 to get in the distance I wanted to cover on this hike (about 8.5 miles). The Spence Creek Basin contains a mesh of trails made and named by mountain bikers. The route contains waypoints for some of the trail junctions. It is easy to shorten or lengthen the loop by taking other trails. At the trailhead is one of the modern USFS signs with a map and trails. There are similar maps at some of the trail junctions. I have also created triplogs for these trails.

To make up for the sufferfest I went through on my last backpacking trip, for this weekend I chose an easy wander through the Spence Basin area, as I was fairly certain the trails were well maintained, and I enjoyed my last visit to this area. I found the trail conditions to be excellent.

Weather was about perfect for the 3 days, with the high reaching 70 and lows staying above freezing. I managed to complete all the parts of my plan well ahead of schedule. I only spent about 8 hours hiking over the 3 days, leaving plenty of time for lounging, relaxing and catching up on both reading and sleep.

While this area is popular with bikers it is also open to hiking and backpacking. Many of the trails skirt nearby housing developments, but even so I found the trails enjoyable, although many of them have few distinguishing features.

Was lucky to run into some deer on Saturday, as that was more wildlife than I expected to see in an area of forest hemmed in by housing developments. Sadly, this area seems to have no spring wildflowers at all and in general the landscape has a drab appearance as if it is still recovering from a harsh winter.

For HAZ members looking to rack up some easy miles through scrub-oak/pine woodland, I'd recommend this area in the spring and fall when it is otherwise a bit hot to hike in the low desert.

Starting from the Iron Springs Trailhead, I took Javelina Trail #332 south to it's end at Thumb Butte Road west of the parking lot for the Thumb Butte trails. To avoid taking the same route back and wanting to hike about 10 miles, I took Tatanka Trail #735 to Russ T. Fender Trail #728, until I reached the south end of West Side Story Trail #725. The return to the Iron Springs Trailhead on #725 made the total about 10.5 miles (the recorded route starts south of the trailhead). The hike can be shortened by returning on #332, or lengthened by using other trails in the Spence Springs Basin. See uploaded photo of one of the many maps along the trails in the Spence Springs Basin.

As the weather was getting hot, tried to get a quick hike in before it reached broil. Finished with temps hitting 85 degrees and it wasn't even noon yet.

The Willow creek riparian zone is by far the most beautiful section of the Thumb Butte area in my opinion.

Second installment of us trying to complete the Prescott Circle Trail. Stephanie is planning on a trail race in April having never done a trail run before, so I found a pretty short segment on what I hoped was easy terrain where we could park at each end. We started at the Iron Springs Railroad TH, crossed Iron Springs Road to get on Javelina trail #332 I have done Javelina Trail going the other direction before and it was very well maintained, the same went for this direction. It was fairly mild climbing and descending for the duration, pretty good for a first trail run. There was still some snow in shaded sections from the snow we got Thanksgiving night. After 2.1 miles you cross Granite Basin Rd, which is lightly trafficked, then you come to a well secured water tank. Another .8 miles and you will pass two trails going off to the left, there are enough trails over here to keep a person busy a long time. Shortly after those intersections, there's a fork. To the right is a somewhat shorter route to Granite Basin/Katahn Dr parking area (only room for a few cars, but not very busy), to the left is the Circle Trail route that I think has more climbing involved. This section has some loose rock, not bad, but we walked it... along with most of the uphills :) . Throughout, you get great views of Prescott and Granite Mountain.

Javelina Trail crosses Granite Basin Rd. at highest point of road and just west of highest point of trail. Hiked to north end of Javelina Trail at Willow Trail #347. Headed west then north on #347 to Cayuse Picnic Area. On left side of outhouse, followed West Lake Trail #351 northwest to Chimbly Water Trail #348 northeast to Willow Trail #347,then continued east northeast on #347 until nearly 4 miles hiked and returned. Because there is no trailhead where the Prescott Circle Trail crosses Thumb Butte Rd., I started from the Thumb Butte Recreation Area, hiking west for a mile on Thumb Butte Bypass Trail #326 and Miller Creek Trail #367 to pick up the PCT. Just in that first mile, it was obvious that there had been no drop off in the #flowerporn over the past fortnight.

There is space for a few vehicles where the Prescott Circle Trail crosses Thumb Butte Rd., but it is marked by several no parking signs. It would suck to go for a long walk only to return to your trailhead to discover you have more walking — and a hefty fine — ahead of you. 🚫🚙

From Thumb Butte Rd., the PCT follows Javelina Trail #332. The first half mile is old jeep trail, then it is 2.5 miles of shady single track to Spence Springs Rd. In that distance I encountered nine mountain bikers, one hiker, and jillions of flowers. Just before Spence Springs Rd., there is an corral and stone fireplace, obviously the remains of an old homestead.

Javelina Trail #332 continues along Spence Springs Rd., which is mostly crushed volcanic cinders — rare in this area — for the first mile, before gradually transitioning to more common gravel surface. A car could easily drive it and, although there is a gate at Iron Springs TH, I did see a BMW SUV near the utility substation. He must have come in the back way from Deering Park.

Just past the BMW, I saw a mountain biker pushing her ride. I asked if she had a flat, but she said she’d strained a muscle and could not pedal. I offered to stay with her, but she declined. Onward. 🚑

Though I was hiking on a mindnumbing forest road, the Prescott Circle Trail did offer some good views of points east from the old gravel pit a half mile south of Iron Springs Rd. I could see Mingus Mountain, Glassford Hill, Spruce Mountain, Mount Union and, of course, Thumb Butte.

A quarter mile north of Iron Springs Rd., I found a decent place for a break. I sat down amongst a patch of some green plant that resembled a fern, but with much finer stems and leaves. While I aired out my feet and had a snack, I noticed a faintly unpleasant smell. (That was not my feet.) Like old skunk, but not nearly as bad. I figured there must be something dead near by.

After crossing a gulley a half mile north of my break spot, there was very little shade the last four miles of the hike to Katahn TH.

For about a half mile north of Granite Basin Rd. there were tremendous views across Granite Basin to Two Rock Mountain, Little Granite Mountain and Granite Mountain. ⛰

There was an cluster of stunning paintbrush flowers just before the Willow Connector Trail #346 intersection.

Just past Trail #346, there is a confusing tangle of trail intersections: Willow Trail #347, itself, continues directly towards the Katahn Work Center (a Prescott National Forest facility). Not sure what the trail surface is like, but it cannot be any rockier than the remainder of the Prescott Circle Trail, which instead follows Ho-Kay-Gan Trail #341. Taking the Trail #347 shortcut will save ¾ of a mile over staying on the PCT. That’s not really much of a shortcut, but your feet will appreciate it if you are not a PCT completist. 👣

About a mile from Katahn TH, I took my second break. I could have kept walking, but I wanted to call my wife for a pickup. I sat in the same sort of fern-ish plants I had on my first break, and smelled the same vaguely unpleasant smell. Rather than a dead thing, or my exposed feet, it must be the plants. 🤔

When I reached Katahn TH, I was glad to be finished: My feet were sore and it was much, much warmer than I expected.

I never really got into hiking when I lived in Prescott 15 years ago; the Thumb Butte area definitely shows what I missed.

Started up the paved Thumb Butte trail with a cool 40 degrees at the start. Made it to the top in about 30 minutes, which is really good for me :y: The skies were crystal clear with views to Bill Williams and the San Francisco Peaks. After that I just meandered around the various trails making a loop back to the car. This is a great area even if you skip the climb up Thumb Butte. Light traffic on this Monday morning; maybe 4-5 hikers and one mountain biker.

There was a 30 foot or so section of ice covering the paved trail in the upper sections which was slick, but very careful foot placement can get you through it. Otherwise just some small but firm muddy patches here and there along the other trails.

Joe suggested the PCT earlier in the year and Bruce and I jumped on board. Bruce and Route Editor broke it into three day hikes for us. This was our third and final section. This one had the most street walking but was still enjoyable with the company I had. The diverse terrain, Joe's singing capabilities and mirthful sense of humor, Bruce's cerebral conversation, and me to keep balance :D, I found hiking the Prescott Circle Trail quite entertaining. Dallin and I have very different capabilities and both did the PCT we were capable of :o  . Even this one I had to do as a slackpacker. My hats off to Dallin and the real PCT.
Another enjoyable day with Joe and Bruce in the Arizona Outdoors... :y:
