Kelly and I opted for some new territory on the McDowell North part of the preserve. Parked at the Pima Dynamite trailhead and got started. The parking lot was nearly empty at 0830. Nice temps to start, but it warmed up quickly with full sun and no breeze. Didn’t have any set idea of the trails to do, but linked up enough to at least hit ten miles. Everything was easy, with good footing. A fair amount of bikes, but only a few hikers. As we were finishing, there was a helicopter circling overhead, and plenty of emergency vehicles from both Scottsdale and Phoenix. More were arriving as we were driving out. Nice morning and good to knock out several miles with Kelly.

linda drove us up to dynamite and pima this morning
set out around 0830 or so
nice temps, warming up enough for a wardrobe change after an hour
we did a variety of trails for some good linkage
some of the trails were more scenic than others
not much elevation gain to be had but good trail surface with excellent footing
more mountain bikers than hikers
about half the trails were new to me
thanks for hiking, linda, much appreciated! :)

*break time seems long, just checking route possibilities, ladies' room stop and moving aside for bikers

... still catching up from my wildflower hikes:
Well I'm still on my wildflower hunt so I thought I would try the McDowell Sonoran Preserve plus I've been wanting to get out here for a few weeks now, and on a weekday.  The temps were supposed to be warmer today, but with a slightly filtered sun, it should be just right.  I decided on the Cone/Brown clockwise loop.  At the trailhead, I talked of my route to the docent who asked, he warned me of a rattlesnake on the Wrangler.

I could tell right away that wildflowers were not showing yet and that was fine; it should mean less filming/picture taking and more hiking.  What was I thinking?  After all, this is a lush part of the Sonoran Desert and out here, it was big and there were boulders scattered about as well.  I ran into quite a few hikers on the Upper Ranch Trail in the first mile.  One seemed relieved they were only 1/2 mile from the TH.  The sky was pretty for most of the hike and the filtered sun made for some nice picture taking and movies :D

This Preserve is well-signed but not perfectly as I missed my turn on the Cone Mountain Loop Trail and when I realized I was headed on the northeast side of Cone Mountain, I backtracked to the intersection with the Wrangler Trail.  The trail swings pretty wide as it traverses the lower regions below Cone Mountain on the south side.  There were dots of poppies but lots of Wiry Lotus.  You start seeing more boulders closer to the trail as you get toward the southwest side.

As I rounded the west side the clouds seemed to join together to create a slight overcast.  There was a bit of a breeze and I was surprised that it had a cold feel which was rather nice; at least now.  I went through one section with lots of tall Desert Lavender and there were even a couple blooms.  The little valleys you pass through would have bigger patches of poppies.  The other thing I would start seeing more of was the Soap and Banana Yucca plants; especially once I headed north on Cloudburst Trail where I should have headed west on Cone Mountain Trail to catch the trail below Brown's.  I didn't even think to check RS and my "pin to track" must not have been on to notify me.  As I kept going north, but then west, and zigzagging, I still thought I was going the right way; especially when I reached the Hawknest Trail and finally started heading east.

The Loop doesn't list the individual trails so I'll have to keep that in mind when I do these loops out here.  Fortunately, it was fabulous terrain and I was entertained by the desert flora and saguaros.  I kept thinking maybe I had been out this way before and looking back, last year I was on the Hawknest Trail but from the south to Cloudburst and along the west and south side of Cone back to Pima/Dynamite TH.  This part of the Hawknest I had not been on.  It had a few cool little valleys that Mother Nature did a very nice job of decorating.  I really enjoyed those.

I was glad to be going east but then I got concerned with how far east was I going?  Eventually I came to another intersection with the Basalt Ridge Trail which would take me south to where I wanted to be.  This was also a nice little section of trail.  Off to the southeast I could see this long patch of green so I tried to zoom and get pictures as it really stood out; looked like it had been manicured even.  The summit looked so small from here as I continued.

And then I finally arrived at where I should have been a few miles ago, the Upper Ranch Trail and Brown's Mountain Trail.  And, believe it or not, I had gotten slightly chilly the last mile or so.  Up I went observing the trail had been beaten up pretty bad from people using it when it was wet or slightly so.  There are a couple bedrock areas to walk over which is something I like.  It's not a tough hike up and there are a couple flatter places where you can catch your breath, or in my case, take pictures of the distant views which were showing up very distinctly.  It's when you take pictures of those mountains/mesas that you realize what a huge valley :o we live in and we're lucky to have a few mountains in the valley to climb up.

I debated whether I would do the short trail to the summit but since the wind had let up a little and it's a short hike I headed on up Brown's Summit Trail.  A family had gone up before me like they were goats.  I was glad I summited as the views with this light and our.... you guessed it, green desert floor, the area was beautiful :app: .  Those distant views to the Superstitions and layered looks to the west were even more pronounced now it seemed.  And because of that light, the Four Peaks with their remaining snow were photographing beautifully as well.  I actually sat down, had a mini Kind bar, and responded to a text from my brother.  The sun came out for a bit and warmed me up too.  But it was getting late so I headed back down.  I did slip and fall on the loose rock but no big deal.  However, I will note, the trail down to the saddle may be short, but it is slick.  Gosh, the last time I was up there was 2014 so I was due.

And now for the last 1 1/2 miles on the rest of the Brown's Mountain Trail back to the TH.  There were still people coming up, the Park closes at 6:25 and it was around 5 now.  The trail zig zags down so it makes for changing views and still not much in the way of wildflowers, but there was plenty of other interesting desert flora that we don't get to see as much of over on the Phoenix Preserves. The limited sun was trying to light up Cholla and Granite Mountains. The sky colors were somewhat muddy but I was still able to frame up some tall Soaptree Yucca.

And now to enjoy my huckleberry beer after another successful hike, even though I actually get a little more tired when I do all that filming as it takes longer.

Once again, I took a lot of movies but wow, what a beautiful day and great filming conditions :) .  The light really made the distant areas show off and of course, still snow on the mountains.  The views from the summit were outstanding in this light, trust me:

FYI - while doing some research I found this piece that was put together in 2021. It's a quick read and with photos. I think most of us that like geology will like this article: How the Valley of the Sun got its Valley https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/2f ... e8c667088c

My first time hiking in this area. Nice smooth trails. Outstanding desert flora and fauna.
We got started hiking soon after the gate opened to cool dry air for a change.
Flushed a white tail buck along the Axle Grease trail. Then we saw a group of Harris Hawks sitting in a dead tree, which was very cool.
We hiked up Cone Mountain off trail and ran across a desert tortoise on the descent. To top it off, Kelly spotted a Gila Monster along the Latigo trail on the return. Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

wanted some mileage without much elevation gain, since my right knee has been bothering me a bit this week
hadn't hiked from the new dynamite and pima trailhead yet, so thought this would work
john signed on last minute
we were early for the gate opening at 0541 and got going soon after
axle grease to hackamore to cone mountain trail
john wanted to hit a peak while in the neighborhood, and he led an off trail route up cone mountain, which was a new summit for me
i've been up most of the other north preserve peaks
returned via upper ranch, rustler and latigo trails
double digits but less than a thousand feet of gain
knee was fine
three new trails for me and nice to go from a new area
the best parts of the hike included cool temps, large healthy saguaros and ocotillos, and quite a few critters: harris hawks, a buck, a desert tortoise and a gila monster :)
thanks for coming along, john - fun morning

*just looked at an old triplog
guess i've been up here before :-k

Lately I'm inclined toward hiking in the Scottsdale area on Fridays to try and avoid the weekend crowds. I've not seen nor hiked near this trailhead. So after my hair appt in N Scottsdale, picking up a Subway sandwich that I ate at the TH, it was time to start hiking.
I had drawn out this loop of around 8 1/2 miles; pretty flat, I couldn't seem to fit in a hill :( . I had to limit my time out here as I had an evening event to attend to see my niece cheerleading at her high school's quarter final basketball game at Veteran's Coliseum. I knew this was a likely biking area so suspected the trails would be smooth as glass and they were. It really does let you enjoy your surroundings so much more when you can walk and gawk.

I started with the Hawknest Trail on the west side of this area and headed north. I immediately noticed it was a fabulous desert area and would be for the whole hike. Throughout this hike, there are also smatterings of boulder sections so that's always fun. The flora was changing throughout and there were saguaros dispersed as well. The only distraction were those darn power poles but I did get somewhat used to them.

There are many trails that intersect and while there are signs, sometimes they are just a little confusing. I pretty much knew my route and how far I needed to hike so I didn't have a problem. I finally got far enough and high enough that I could now see the snow on the mountains so I zoomed in for a closer look. After passing by several other trail junctions, I finally got to the Cloudburst Trail which would start my route mostly to the east, altho it squiggles north from time to time. You have nice views of both Cone and Brown Mountains.

Next was the very scenic Cone Mountain Trail that I had lost been on with Linda a few years back. It was near this section where I would see the only Teddy chollas. You start heading slightly south while continuing east. There's lots of boulders and great flora as you hike below the south flank of Cone Mountain. I hiked by a nice section of lavender plants. I now hooked up with part of the Hackamore Trail that took me east. You can take it to the southside of Brown's Ranch TH; for me it was just a 1/2 mile connector to the three miles of the Latigo Trail southward toward the Pima/Dynamite Trailhead. I now realized I would get done sooner than I thot and wish I had brot an after-hike beer.

Hiking into the sun limited my photo taking for the most part. There are views to the Tom's Thumb area and McDowell Mountains as well as a lot of green grass of Troon. And even though you start seeing houses too, you still feel very much in the middle of the desert. Oh, before I forget, occasionally I would have to get off the trail as bikers would pass by and the ground was so cushy :) ; I really liked that. There were several intersecting trails so once again, I felt the need to consult the signs to make sure I stayed the course.

There were interesting changes of flora as I continued south and now started to encounter more hikers and bikers. I would probably see about a dozen hikers and two dozen bike riders on this hike so not bad. I'm still having problems with my once seemingly flawless phone camera. I'm going to change the lens protector as maybe it's scratched and see if that helps. The trail makes a wide swath as it takes you to the TH.

These TH digs are really quite beautiful. The bathroom was very nice and very modern as was the water station. These trails are a little flat for me as I like to throw in some sort of climb but really nothing much around here except maybe Rock Tank Trail.

WATCH: 8.69 miles (2,760 high point/2,365 low) Avg 133 bpm/151 max with 57% in Zone 3 aerobic, 42% Zone 2 Weight Control burning 1,230 calories. Starting temp 59, sunny and 27% humidity finishing at 12:54PM. Believe it or not, I kept my vest on the whole time. It was mostly the breeze that kept it just a tad nippy for me.

Chuparosa were in all sorts of conditions and some were superb! Wiry Lotus was mostly that. It's just not the most beautiful plant to photograph. A few of the Mormon Tea were also blooming as was the Bursage... once again, not the most beautiful of blooms. There were a few blooming Wolfberries too.

Early morning start at 6:30am from Brown's Ranch TH in Scottsdale. Started on the main Brown's Ranch Road Trail through the desert to the summit spur trail. Took about 40-45 minutes to reach the summit on Brown's Mt. Last 0.2 mile is uphill and scrambly in spots but nothing horrible. Great views all around from the summit. Saw a few hikers and mountain bikers after I started but that thinned out once I got off the main trail. Only two couples on the spur summit trail.

From there I headed back to Powerline Road #2 and east to the 118th St. trail. South to Latigo Trail and back to the TH. No one on the powerline road, a scattered few on Latigo.

Took a brief break at the TH and then went out to part of the Cone Mountain Trail. Saw plenty of lizards and a roadrunner. A few cactus, creosote and palo verde in bloom. No other exciting critters.

Oh that Linda does seem to fly up peaks, with or without trails. No wonder she and Kelly get along so well . And how did I end up in this mix :-k . However, in this case, I think I suggested this one ](*,) .

We almost missed our turn for Cone Mountain Summit. Linda led the way up which I appreciated so I could concentrate on just my ascent. It wasn't the easiest of routes as you had to avoid so many different things on the way. The summit was nice and the views impressive. It was VERY windy going up the side but once on top, the wind was almost nil. We took a slightly different route down but eventually hooked up with Kelly's route. As we descended a hawk was trying to get our attention and as always, fun to watch it catch the wave so to speak.

And then it was around the mountain we went trying to decipher where there might be additional routes one could take to the top but Kelly's seemed to be the shortest if anything. We did encounter a few hikers on this side and some trail stewards as well as some bikers. I was having trouble with a small sore my new shoes had caused me on Thurs so I stopped to re-bandage it again. A biker even yelled over to ask if we were okay; wasn't that nice!

And then it was on to Brown's which was more up than from the other side. But I trudged along and tried to keep up with Linda. She sets a nice pace so that's good for me. We finally got up to the saddle but I told her to proceed so I could, once again, change my bandages. They kept falling off :( . This time I used several pieces of tape. When we got back to Brown's Ranch Road and the intersection with Corral, we reviewed my options in light of my heel issue. The bandage was, more or less, staying on so we proceeded on Corral, Dry Gulch and Cholla to get to the Amphitheatre which I wanted Linda to see.

We had a quick lunch and rather than head over to Balanced Rock we took the beautiful Watershed Trail to Chuckwagon. It's extra lush through here. This whole Preserve has so much extra desert flora it's really worthy of more visitation by yours truly. I keep threatening to give a bike a try but as I told Linda, "I'm such a gawker I'm afraid I would crash numerous times."

And then along the Chuckwagon Trail we got to see five hawks all of a sudden fly in our vicinity. We watched them as they landed in various areas and flew around; it was so cool. I'm glad I took as many shots as I did as I did manage to get two good photos. In the distance to the SE I saw extreme haze in the Superstitions; we assume from dust, but it was quite thick. We started walking again and then when we looked north we could see some billowing smoke over by the Seven Springs area. There were a few different small billowy-like plumes. We're hoping it's intentional fire but since it was pretty breezy today, we were a little worried.

And per usual, quite a few bikers on the Chuckwagon Trail as we made our way back to the TH. Linda got to be the first to meet Tonto the Third (III)/MYTONTO 3. We finished our beer (root) and parted company. Thx again Linda, glad you got a couple more peaks. And thx for putting up with me fixing my heel every couple miles.

Met Angela at Brown's Ranch TH at 0830 and we got started. Not as cool as I'd hoped it would be, but a nice breeze. Headed up Upper Ranch, then left on Cone Mountain Trail. Headed offtrail up to the summit of Cone Mountain. Short and steep offtrail. Some loose rocks and slippery decomposed granite, but we managed to stay upright. We spent some time dodging vegetation as well. Views from the top were nice, and surprisingly, no breeze up there.

Once back on the trail, we continued around Cone Mtn, then headed up Brown's Mountain Trail. Angela waited for me at the start of the spur trail to the summit. I went up there real quick, took a few pictures, then headed back down. Nobody else at the summit. From there, we backtracked west and then took Corral Trail east, then Dry Gulch over to Cholla Mtn Loop trail. Lots of nice yucca along these sections of trail.

It was warming up by the time we reached the Amphitheater, so we sat in the shade there while we ate lunch. From there, we headed south on Watershed, then west on Chuckwagon back to the trailhead. Probably the highest concentrations of cactus of the day along those two trails. Along Chuckwagon, we saw 5-6 hawks that circled around us but didn't seem to want to leave the area. The settled in trees and saguaros along the trail and watched us as we took pictures of them. Neat to see.

Nice day, great conversation, and enjoyable to get some easy miles in while hiking through picturesque scenery.

Morning run out in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Love these trails! Started from the Ranch TH around 7:30. Surprisingly the TH wasn’t that full; probably about 20 vehicles. Wanted to do a loop involving Cone Mountain trail, ended up doing a figure 8. Took the UpperRanch Trail to connect to the Cone MountainTrail. Really enjoy the Upper Ranch trail. One of the best way to move north-south in the preserve. Fairly direct, but still interacts nicely with the surrounding area. Took Cone Mountain trail CCW. This is the first time that I’ve done this trail in its entirety. The trail hugs the slopes on the north and west sides and swings out a little on the south side causing some ups and downs. On the way back took Rustler trail to where it connected to Latino and took that back to the TH. Rustler was annoying at first doing some straight ascents/descents with some washes, but rebounded nicely as it approached Latigo weaving between cool rock formations. Alto go is a solid single track, gaining elevation as it goes west to east. No wildlife and not that many users: 7 hikers, 5 bikers. Weather was clear and cold....definitely jacket weather.

First mountain bike ride at MSPN. I've done hikes from Brown's Ranch and the eastern trail heads, but today I started at the conveniently located Pima and Dynamite trail head. Started on Latigo, over to Browns Ranch trail head and picked up Upper Ranch trail to Cone Mountain back to Upper Ranch with a short stint on Basalt Ridge and all the way back to Pima and Dynamite on Hawknest. Fantastic loop. Silky smooth trails and easy climbing grades. I am now spoiled! Just wish I didn't have to drive 60 miles to get there.

With the Steeler debacle happening on Thursday night, Sunday was open for a nice hike with the family. A few new trails in the northern MSPN were recently published, and I never took them up there before, so this seemed liked the way to go. I decided on a circuit with the Cloudcrest and Tarantula Trails that was between 5 and 6 miles long.

I realized at the start I forgot to pack my camera and GPS, so I had to wing it using my phone as both. Not my preferred option, especially for the camera, but the habit of redundancy helps out.

We started out on the Upper Ranch Trail, then took the Cone Mountain Trail to the Cloudcrest Trail. Then a bit further east on the Hawknest Trail, then southbound on the West Express to the Tarantula Trail, then back to the trailhead on the Hackamore and Latigo Trails.

Saw more bikers than hikers during the hike, and one group of horse riders at the start of the Latigo. Temperature seemed to be a bit warmer at the very start then at the end, which was unusual. I think the breezes picked up later, contributing to that. Much more sun than yesterday, had to keep my hood up to prevent sunburn this time.

Hit Four Peaks for lunch on the way home, nice Sunday morning.

Got to the Pima-Dynamite TH about 6:20am and had to wait 10 minutes for the gate to open. Started out on the Powerline Road #1 Trail, then did a clockwise loop going northeast on the Hawknest Trail, then took the Basalt Ridge, Upper Ranch, Hackamore and Latigo Trails back. I had originally planned to do a figure 8 crossing over on one of the unmapped trails, but I forgot about that along my hike in. It would have added only another mile at the most.

Everything is very green right now, and the vegetation is also very high, with pretty big stalks at the base. Could be a lot of fuel come wildfire season. Lots of wildflowers out as well, many patches of poppies once the sun hits.

Mostly bikers out, and trail runners. Hikers don't seem to venture far from the trailheads. The hikers I saw were all within a couple miles of the Pima-Dynamite or the Brown's Ranch trailheads.

A girl hiking the other way along the Upper Ranch Trail had a black dog that she was letting wander up ahead of her and off trail. On the last mile of my hike, two bikers had him on a leash, riding slowly, asking everyone they passed if they lost a dog.

Finished before 11am, the majority of the miles today were trails I had never hiked before.

A beautiful and easy hike. Huge interesting boulders all around, and the plants are so varied and nicely spaced, I was starting to wonder if the city had planted them. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon it was quite busy with both hikers and mountain bikers, but still a nice quiet walk.

Met Larry at the trailhead at 9am. Started on Hackamore, and made a large clockwise loop towards Brown's Mountain. At the spur trail to the top, Larry decided to wait while I went up there real quick. I headed up, looked around for a minute, then headed back down to the main trail. On my way down, there was a bicyclist carrying his bike to the top, he said he was going to ride back down and said it's his favorite part of the trail. I half jokingly told him to wait until I was done and off that part of trail so as to avoid becoming a speed bump for him. We headed back to the trailhead, then threw in the Jane Rau Trail for good measure. Nice day, but it sure did warm up quickly.

Did this loop clockwise, following Booneman's official route: Passed Cone Mtn on the N, then continued N on the rough and lonesome Upper Ranch Tr with its numerous ravines and finally to the Mountain Tr and on up to the saddle of Brown's Mountain. At the saddle I did not go for the summit on the S nor the Scenic Overlook on the N. I had an hour before sunset, and I knew the camera would be busy shooting this beautiful, virgin land as the shadows began to stretch across it. I got disgusted with the gods of Four Peaks for keeping them optically tantalizing yet unlit. Can't have everything. Got back 10 minutes after a terrific sunset with only two other vehicles remaining in the parking lot. The lot was very busy earlier. If only I lived closer to Brown's Ranch than what is the actual 33 miles and close to an hour's drvie, I would be out here much more often. For desert scenery, I can think of only a couple places in Maricopa County that match this area.

Patches of Fiddle Neck and Phacelia mostly coming up Brown Mountain's NW slope. Also ran into two or three lily blooms. This area is still a week or two away from hitting peak wildflower season.
