Took the fat bike up to Pima Dynamite this morning with the intention of doing a Rawhide Wash Browns Ranch Road kind of loop. Got a late start, but still rolling off before lunch. Took Rawhide Wash from the parking area, the first section out to Dixileta Road was nice sort of soft singletrack trail. From Dixileta it becomes deep, hoofed out, hell sand. Rode north as far as I could before I gave up and took Rock Tank trail over to Axle Grease. Took Axle Grease north to West Express, all of Stagecoach clockwise out to Cholla Mountain Loop south, Dry Gulch and Corral over to Brown's Ranch Road. I wanted to go east on Brown's Ranch Road, but ended up heading west, I guess it looked like less of a climb, I dunno. Found myself at Powerline #1 and headed south, picked up Hawknest, Hackamore, and Axle Grease back to the trailhead. I guess I lost my mojo today as I was spanked when I got back to the van. Light traffic on the trails today, a few hikers and some mountain bikers.

I met Brian at the Brown's Ranch TH just after 6am. I hadn't been up to this area in a while and with the heat kicking in, this is usually a good spot because the trails are pretty easy to hike. I was open to anything, and Brian hadn't done the West Express Trail yet.

From the TH, we took Brown's Ranch Road to the Upper Ranch Trail, to Basalt Ridge, and then the Powerline Road #1 up to the north end of the West Express Trail. From there, we hiked southbound on West Express to it's endpoint where it meets the Latigo Trail. We hiked back on that to the Powerline Road #2. We had planned on getting back on Latigo where it crosses the powerline, but the heat was kicking in pretty good, so we just stayed on the powerline road until Upper Ranch again and got back to the TH.

The last mile or so I was feeling the heat. Brian's first choice for this hike was Owl Hoot, which would have been close to 14 miles RT. I was at my limit for the day once we got just over 11. 2 more months until reasonable weather it seems.

Another attempt at the Owl Hoot Trail. Another failure. Opted once again to log this under the Powerline #1 trail since over half my hike was on this trail. Last time out, I zigged when I should have zagged. This time, I got to the correct area, but I was looking for the Owl Hoot trail sign. When I came across the “neighborhood access trail” sign I thought it was a different trail. Typically, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is very good about labeling their trails. Not sure why the trail system map says one thing and then the sign at the trail juncture says something else. If I had Chris’s trail description, I would have been forewarned. Shame on me for assuming. ](*,) .

Got out to the Pima TH around 5:40am. Gates opened at 5:52am. Ended up doing a very malformed figure 8. I went in on the Hawknest for about 3.5 miles and then took Powerline #1 out to the Stage Coach trail. I knew I had gone farther than I need, but I thought for sure that I would catch the Owl Hoot on the way back as I did the Stagecoach. About 9 miles in I came to the “neighborhood access trail”. Thinking this was a neighborhood use trail, I continued on expecting to see the Owl Hoot shortly. Not the case; and by the time I concluded that the “access trail” must be the Owl Hoot trail I was too tired to turn around and tack that on. I ended up on the Western Express for a time, until I jumped over to the Powerline #1 trail which I took back to the TH.

Always like hiking in the McDowell SP and this was no exception, even with the Powerline trail. Would have been nice to check another trail off my to do list. Weather was again great. A few clouds to the east, offered some color to the morning sunrise. Encountered 6 bikers and 1 biker. Wildlife was nice….covies of quail (a lot) , lizards, rabbits, chipmunks and even a couple of deer.

Been sick the last 2 days & still recovering. However, these trails are fairly flat and I surprised myself by keeping a decent pace through this.

Saw many mtn bikers but no hikers. Temps were perf. More of a laid back outing than many of the others.

My original plans fell through to hike another section of the BCT with the I-17 lane restrictions all weekend, so I decided to head up the MSPN preserve and hike the sections of the powerline roads that I had never done yet. got started about 6:15am from Pima-Dynamite, but it felt later with the sun already above the horizon and the lot pretty full.

Just as I was starting along the Powerline Road #1, Brian was running the other way finishing up his morning run. We stopped and chatted for a few minutes and then I was on my way. I took PL Road #1, Latigo, PL Road #2, Upper Ranch, Brown's Ranch Road, Malapais, PL Road #1 again, West Express, Rawhide Wash, and PLRoad #1 straight back to the trailhead.

Biggest sight to see was the nest on Malapais Trail. I think I've seen that there last year or 2 years before. Got a good view of the mama hawk feeding her babies breakfast. the trail goes right below the saguaro they've nested in. I didn't linger too close or too long, wondering how stressful that might be for them to have the traffic below close by.

While walking in the Rawhide Wash, I thought I saw a biker zipping by the other way along the Powerline Road #1, but then I realized it was too far away to see. I turned to look and saw that it was deer running full speed. No chance at all for a picture.

Got back right around 11am and called it a day. temperature was perfect all morning, didn't even drink half my Camelbak bladder.

Belated post. Morning run in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Kind of dated so to be honest I can’t even remember the exact route I took. Posting this more to keep track of mileage as anything else. Love running in the McDowells. Today was no exception. Got to the Pima TH literally as the gate was opening. :) Took the Powerline Rd#1 in. This is the main trail that takes off from this TH and this trail is the exception to the fantastic trails in the preserve. The Powerline is a road and very unimaginative at that. Wide, straight and adjacent to power lines. However, this trail will get get to all the good trails. (Note: There is construction that is occurring a little ways from the parking area. They are building a new facility that I’m sure will be very comparable to the the other TH facilities. When this is done I am sure the parking will be relocated and the need to use the Powerline will be minimized). From the Powerline, I took the Stagecoach. Fun single track trail. Does a lot of weaving through cool rock formations. My thought was to work my way to the Owl Hoot trail. However, one of the things that I love about these trails actually tripped me up. I was using a signed “connector” trail to get to the West Express trail. When I hopped on the Express Trail I went the direction I thought would take me out toward the Hoot trail. However as it twisted and weaved it started working its way back south :( I could have turned around, but I was a little frustrated with my ineptitude, so I kept going with the loop I was creating. Shortly came to the Axle Grease Trail and I continued south on that. Another very fun trail with twist and turns that brought me to where the construction was occurring. From here I took the Powerline to get back to the TH. As I was nearing the TH I cam upon Chris just starting out on his hike. Note: Many of the trails in this area will need to be updated as they extend much further into the Pima area than indicated on the HAZ map. However, it may be prudent for construction at this TH to finish to allow for any trail revisions that still may occur. Nice run, though not what I had planned.

Started from the Pima-Dynamite TH to hike a few sections of trails I noticed I hadn't got yet in this area. Headed down the Powerline Road, then left on the Hawknest, and another left onto the Rock Tank Trail. that first mile or so there were a whole lot of bikers who seemed to have all left the trailhead at the same time. After that first half hour, didn't see many people at all.

After a section of the Rock Tank, I headed northeast in the Rawhide Wash, then headed south again on the Hawknest and Scorpion Trails. Then I headed north again on the Powerline Road and did a couple more sections of the Scorpion Trail again, which I hadn't hiked before. I took the Scorpion Trail south to the West Express, then north to the Tarantula and Hackamore, hitting another section of that which I hadn't hiked before. I took the Hackamore to the Powerline Road again and then took that back to the car.

The clouds covered the sun on and off, making the temperature cooler than it's been in a while. It was still humid, but having temperatures under 100 for the whole hike was very nice. some breezes came through once in a while also, making it pretty pleasant.

got back to the trailhead with much less people there than when I arrived in the morning. Early on I saw some smoke to the north behind DEsert Mountain, maybe somewhere around 7 Springs, or south of that. By the end of my hike, the amount of smoke had grown considerably.

First hike back in AZ and with the heat I decided to head back up to the northern Scottsdale Pima-Dynamite TH and hike some more of the new unmapped trails up there. I mostly hiked the new trails along the Latigo Trail, zig zagging between Powerline Road #1 and Powerline Road #2. Saw a few bikers, most of them at the very start of the hike.

The heat wasn't really so bad, but I was done by 10am. Didn't see any hikers or much of anything else. It's surprising that hiking just a few of the new trails I discovered, I was quickly nearly up to 9 miles. I found a few more unmapped trails and would hike a few feet out and back to mark them with a spur on my GPS track, making it easy to find them when I go back to hike the rest of them again.

When I hiked the Hawknest/Latigo loop last March, I intended to hike the Rock Tank Trail but then forgot. In the meantime, I noticed a lot of unmapped trails in this area. This time I went back to check some of those out.

I started out on the Powerline #1 Road, then the Hawknest like my last time here. When I got to the junction for the Rock Tank Trail, I noticed that an unmapped trail that seems to also be part of the Rock Tank Trail heads northwest towards the Axle Grease Trail. I took that until it faded away and then headed back to the Rock Tank Trail. At the Latigo Trail, the Rock Tank again continues unmapped farther to the south. I took that spur out and back and headed northeast on the Latigo.

I took the first unmapped trail junction along the Latigo and started following those trails, generally heading in a northeast direction. There were several junctions, and at each one I hiked a very short spur to mark it on my track. If you zoom in on my posted track you can see them.

I eventually ended up back on the Hawknest Trail by the connecting trail to the Axle Grease. I took that spur out and back and headed back along the Powerline #1 Road, taking a few more spurs along the way.

The clouds early in the morning made the weather pretty cool. There were a few breezes that also helped with that. By the time I finished, it was only 96, made it out before the triple digits hit for the day.

Two hawks were sitting on 2 separate powerline towers on my way back screeching at me or each other, I don't know which.

Not an eventful hike, but nice to find as many unmapped and previously unhiked trails on this hike. Also nice to find several more trails to make a return trip worthwhile.

Lot to do this time of year, so I cheated a little when doing this hike. Instead of starting from an official TH, I started from Stagecoach Rd. Parked along the shoulder of the road and had to jog a little ways, but once entering the preserve I was immediately on the Powerline Road #1. I thought this would allow me to knock it out quick and get on with my day. But I believe this trail is now closer to 6 miles one way rather than the reported 2 miles. This trail now runs all the way from Stagecoach Rd. to the Dynamite TH. See....cheating never pays! Of the Powerline trails, this is the nicer of the two. It doesn't have the "up and down" that is inherent in #2. But that being said, it is still a road. I was on this trail when dawn was still breaking, so it didn't feel that bad. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I only went in to Hawknest, before starting a loop back. At Hawknest there was actually a "connector trail" that took me more in the direction that I wanted to go, so I took that to the West Express Trail. The connector trail was short, only .4 miles in length, but pretty sweet. Very much in the nature of what I have come to expect for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. I then followed the West Express all the way back to where it connected with Powerline. The Express was nice, but it was "troughish" and had quite a nodules or speed bumps, which I find to be annoying on my runs. Still it was scenic and much more preferable than the Powerline. The Express got me back to near the beginning of the Powerline so it was a quick return back to my car.

Nice to get this one done, though in my mind, I still have to do the front half. The Powerline is a major artery that runs north/south is that connects to a bunch of trails, so it shouldn't be that hard to come up with a loop that will accomplish that purpose. Didn't see anyone on the trails but I did hear a bikers bell a couple of times. Did see 5 deer. A group of two, and then later on, a group of three which is always a treat. Weather was chilly, but I warmed right up with the jog. :)

A new map has been released for the Northern Area of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. It’s dated Fall 2018 and shows the trails added out of the Pima/Dynamite Trailhead. As a member of the All Trails Club I feel I should hike any and all trails added to the list. Very quiet today as in 2,5 hours I only came across 2 single runners and 2 single bikers. Really enjoyed the Hawknest Trail with its up, down and around path. Plus lots of interesting granite formations.

Brian and I did another shuttle hike, picking exactly where we left off 2 weeks ago, where the Maricopa Trail meets Bartlett Dam Road. We only followed the Maricopa Trail for 3.8 miles, where it reaches the northwest corner of the MSP North. from there we took the Dove Valley Trail over to the West Express Trail, then took that southwest until it turned into the Axle Grease Trail and hiked that whole trail. From there, we hiked a very short section of the Temporary Service Road (actual name given by Scottsdale), and then the temporary connector trail over to the Powerline Road #1 and down to the Pima-Dynamite TH.

I expected a lot more of this hike to be along dirt roads and/or service roads, but most of it was actually along a constructed single track. Most of this paralleled the powerline, and we did make a couple crossings. But actually, most of the hike was at least a half mile or more away from the powerline, so the views and overall experience along the trail was better than I expected. This was a very good way to reach some of the more remote sections of the trails up here without having to do a 15+ mile hike.

The trailhead at the NW corner of the MSP North looks like a nice spot to do some hikes and reach the newly built western sections of the Stagecoach Trail. But it does appear that the roads getting there are kind of rough. Going to have to do some further research and try to hike more of these new trails.

Saw one trail runner, one other hiker, and 10 or more bikers. The temperature never got too hot, as we were done by 11am and hiked mostly at an elevation of 2600'.

Been dealing with some knee issues the last 3 weeks, which started on the Arcadia Trail. The knee felt good thru the hike, although a bit sore. Afterwards it seems to have regressed a bit. Kind of sore, and the range of motion in bending it is limited. Old people problems seem to have found me.

Short walk in the park.
Beautifully cool weather.
The park is busting with blooming flora.
Banana Yucca, Poppys, Brittlebush, Dichelostemma capitatum, Fiddleneck, Scorpionweed,Desert Chicory, Globemallow, Luppine, Woolly Daisy, Wiry Lotus, Chuparosa and even Microseris :), to name a few.

This is the best time of year to enjoy this park

With afternoon plans, the goal was to hit a few trails out there I had not been on.

There were no @Mazatzal or @Crzy4AZ sightings

1st trip
Got out for only the 2nd time this month since it's the Steelers' bye week. I started a little later than usual because if you get to the Brown's Ranch TH too early you have to wait for the gate to open. Started about 6:45am, not much later than usual.

I took the Brown's Ranch Road Trail up to the Corral Trail, the Buckshot Trail, then took the Powerline #1 Trail all the way to the north boundary of the preserve and back. Along the way I finished up a section of the Dove Valley Trail that I didn't do before. I took the Upper Ranch Trail on the way back, thinking of trying to finish a section of the Powerline Road #2 trail, but it was already after 11am once I got there, and it would have added another 2 miles, so I decided to call it a day and head home for lunch.

Along the Buckshot Trail I saw 4 hawks of some kind hanging out on a saguaro. At first I thought they might be ravens or vultures, but once I looked at the pics after I zoomed in I could see there raptors. Pretty cool sight.

Temperature wasn't too hot, didn't see a whole lot of hikers or bikers all day.
