Went on a weekend car camping/hiking trip this past weekend with my Son-in-Law, Lloyd, and Grandson Michael to our favorite Mogollon Rim campsite, Camp Grasshopper Site #3, on FR139C. The earliest time of year for our previous trips has always been Memorial Day Weekend. I drove up the Thursday before to check out the road conditions and found them good except for a pond in the middle of FR139C and an occasional small snow drift across the road. The pond was shallow so driving through the right side was not a problem and Turkey hunters had already broken tracks through the snow drifts. The forest was just starting to show springtime flora but mostly still had the drab winter appearance seen immediately after the snow melts off. The meadows in Merritt Draw however had started to green up and actually had grass about 3 inches long inside the fenced off areas protecting it from the larger herbivores. Outside the fences, the meadow grass is kept at a very short length by the elk and deer, reminiscent of a golf course putting green.

Saturday we hiked the Maverick Canyon - Merritt Draw loop. The upper part of Maverick Canyon is known for its Fall display of Bigtooth Maple leaves but of course the trees were bare of leaves and a thick layer of the now colorless maple tree leaves from last Fall littered the forest floor. But the towering pines, occasional snow drifts and rugged canyon walls of the lower canyon still made this a scenic adventure.

Spent a weekend based at camp grasshopper upr cyn loop 3cpo. As always, a nice part of the world.

Waited for the late arrivers before getting started. Humidity was a bit opressive as the moisture sat in the bottom of the canyon and there was little breeze down there. Not much water despite the early onset of the monsoon.

Butterflies and flowers were the highlight. Along with two of the smallest strawberries I've ever seen!

Headed over to Knoll for a late afternoon paddle. Water wasn't as low as I was expecting. Got to watch some osprey successfully catching dinner, and a baldy watching it all unfold from a higher perch.

When I decided to write-up a HAZ Hike Guide for this hike area this past August-2021, I was convinced that this was going to be an awesome hike for viewing our AZ Big Tooth Maples during prime Autumn :FG:

I planned a solo drive/hike here today (up at 4:30am back at 6pm, 260 R/T miles, ~7hrs of driving, and 3/4 tank of gas) to be kind-of disappointed :(

Part of my disappointment was my doing in thinking that Prime Autumn Colors for this area would be sometime this week of 10/4-7/21. I was incorrect.. these dates were way too early by a week or more. Also, I had hoped with the numerous stands of Big Tooth Maple in this section (Re: my August'21 visit [ photoset ] ) that there would be an abundance of different Colors, but unfortunately almost no RED at all and mostly all YELLOW to YELLOW-ORANGE.

Also, and very unfortunate (maybe due to just too much rain this Summer and early Autumn'21) a number of the Maple trees turning leaves are now infected with some type of possible fungus or bacteria that is causing the remaining leaves on the trees to have brown and black color spots.. [ photo ] .. it is very strange to see this on many of the Big Tooth Maple Trees in this hiking section with any color.

I hiked this section today plus an additional 1.5 miles out and back within Maverick Canyon (Upper) before returning to the Park/TH Start. I had plans to also drive further down The Rim Road (FR300) to FR321 for a short .5 mile hike within the always reliable Big Tooth Maple stands of [ Bill McClintock Draw (Upper) ] . I wanted to see and compare what was going on in this area with the Maverick Canyon Spur Maples area, but still having a 3.5 hour, 130 mile drive back home today, it just wasn't possible :( but taking a break at El Rancho in Payson, AZ, [ image ] made the long drive back more barrable :D

I'll try to have some pics up by mid-week to further document my first Autumn Season hiking this off-trail area.

This very pleasant short, scenic, and easy to off-trail navigate hike within the area of our Mogollon Rim- Cabin Loop Trails, has been on my "to check out list" for almost a year now.

As part of a 7 night/8 day planned AZ Monsoon Season vehicle camping/hiking trip, today was my day to checkout and view this new (to me) area for a hopeful return hiking trip during our upcoming Prime Autumn Season.

I confirmed within a 0.7 mile hike in, this Spur Canyon Drainage off of Maverick Canyon, has some of the largest continuous stands of [ Bigtooth Maple ] that I have previously viewed within our Mogollon Rim - Cabin Loop Area

I was impressed with my "out of season" first viewing visit and thought a new HAZ- Hike Guide was in-order to further document for all interested to also enjoy.

I decided to head up to the Rim for a couple of days of hiking and one night of car camping at Camp Grasshopper Site #2. After setting up camp, we hiked over to Pinchot Cabin and back. When we got back to the campsite we decided to climb up the ridge to the west of the campsite and check out the Merritt Draw Riparian Area.

It was a nice day to be hiking up on the Rim. We saw a mountain biker at Pinchot Cabin, but did not see anyone else all day. At Pinchot Cabin we started hiking on the Houston Brothers Trail, thinking that we might go back to the campsite that way. However, after a bit of reflection, I figured that route would be longer than I wanted, so after a short distance on the Houston Brothers Trail, we turned around and went back the way that we came.

The Merritt Draw Riparian Area was really nice and is worthy of some more exploration.

The campsite was clean except for some TP that some moron had left not too far from the fire ring. You'd think that people could do better than that, but I guess not.

This is a nice area, and I hope to get back there later in the summer.

On the drive up AZ-87, my wife & I hit a construction delay a mile north of Payson. In 10 minutes, no car moved either direction. Thirty more cars had arrived behind us. So, I doubled back into town, then took paved Houston Mesa Rd. to Whispering Pines, then dirt Fire Control Rd. / FR 64 to the town of Pine. The bypass doubled my distance, and halved my speed, but at least my wife & were moving. 🚧

As I’ve mentioned several times this year, Rim Rd. / FR 300 is in the best shape I’ve ever seen it. Despite being in such good condition, as we passed by Milk Ranch Point, it was obvious there had been even more recent construction, including fresh gravel. At the top of Miller Canyon, we had to stop for another road crew. At least were the only vehicle waiting, and we enjoyed chatting with the flag guy.

Four hours into a three hour drive, we finally arrived at the head of Merritt Draw, parking at the intersection of FR 139 and FR 9735P. After my hike, rather than repeat the agony of construction delays, we headed east to the end of Rim Rd. / FR 300 — stopping at Woods Canyon Lake along the way 🍦🍺 — to AZ-260, then back into Payson. It was longer, but took less time, due to no construction.

There are three “corrals” in the prairie, I assume to protect the vegetation. The corrals are each surrounded by 6 ft. high non-barbed fencing, that used to be electrified:

Corral #1, at Whistling Spring, was 72 paces wide by 214 paces long. (So, about 200 x 600 ft.) Corral #1 contained a small cluster of youthful aspen that had not yet turned.

Corral #2, at Merritt Spring, was 78 x 142 paces. There was some, but not much, water in the drainage below Merritt Spring.

Corral #3, the largest at 78 x 342 paces, has no named spring. There’s a gate at the southwest corner, but I did not open it. On the south edge, there is a small, non-functional, solar panel that used to power the fence. Inside the corral, several trees were individually fenced. Odd. 🤔

After checking out the bird station, I left the prairie, crossing FR 9735P into the tighter part of Merritt Draw. Though it never got really bad, I did feel the effort of low crawling several logs, as I had not hiked the previous two weeks. (House issues. Yippee.) There is a goat trail up the west bluff a ½ mile before Maverick Canyon, that looks like it connects to FR 9732P or FR 9709F. There were several small pools of water, but no flow.

At the junction of Merritt Draw and Maverick Canyon, bailing up the bluff did not look difficult at all. On satellite view, Maverick Canyon looked more tangled than Merritt Draw, but from the junction it at least started out okay, so I continued my fall colors search up Maverick.

Whereas Merritt Draw was mostly pine (with a few aspen), there was oak, and especially bigtooth maple, on the floor of Maverick Canyon. The first 200 yds. or so, there was some early color high up in the maple, but none yet in the oak. After the maple, Maverick got a bit congested. I side-sloped for maybe a half mile, before it opened back up. From that point back to FR 139, Maverick was smooth sailing, as clear as Merritt Draw had been, but with more golden, fallow, bracken fern. 🍂

A mile up Maverick Canyon, it splits: Grasshopper went left; I went right, and am glad I did. In another half mile, I encountered a grove of bigtooth maple that was only a mile from my trailhead, if I'd gone clockwise. Gorgeous trees full of lime, yellow, orange and crimson. Often mixed amongst each other for bold contrast. I was the best fall color variety I have experienced in 10 years of hiking Arizona! 🤗

I decided to escape the heat of the VOS, so I headed up to the Mogollon Rim to hike and car camp in an area that I had not been to before.

I drove up to Camp Grasshopper Site #2, and got my tent set up. Then I decided to hike north on FR 139C, following the Merritt Draw Lower Loop, and for a short ways the Merritt Draw Middle Loop and Maverick Canyon Loop. After a couple of miles or so I got to the end of 139C, and descended off-trail down to Merritt Draw. After the descent I was across from the Ubar Trail at a nice spring, with a pool of water deep enough to swim in had I been so inclined.

Then I followed the Merritt Draw Lower GPS track up Merritt Draw. The track went uphill after a ways, but it was really overgrown with some thorn bushes. I was wearing a short sleeve shirt with no gloves, and since I really wasn't looking to donate a pint of blood, I backtracked a bit and found a route up between cliffs. It was a bit steep in a couple of places, but it wasn't TOO bad. I then went south, in between FR 139C and @grasshopper's GPS track. I had intended to make my way back to @grasshopper's route, but there was some deadfall in front of me, and I decided to take the easy way, so I went uphill a bit back to FR 139C.

On the way back to the campsite I stopped to check out campsite #3 and campsite #2.5. Campsite #3 was almost, but not quite, as nice as campsite #2. Campsite #2.5 was also nice, but it did not have all the amenities of Campsite #2. Which is why @grasshopper charges less for site 2.5, so it has some appeal to more budget minded campers. otoh, @grasshopper charges an arm and leg for site #2, so you'd better have some deep pockets to stay there!...lol...I am just kidding of course!

Once I got back to Campsite #2, I walked up the hill on the other side of FR 139C, just to check it out. However, I decided to save any further exploration for another day.

This is a nice area, and I plan to come back and explore some more of Merritt Draw, and also hike on some of the Cabin Loop to check out the Pinchot Cabin and Buck Springs Fire Guard Station.

All of our hike yesterday was on-trail, which was just fine for Tracey. While part of the hike today would be along a forest road, the rest of it would present a reasonable amount of a challenge. In reality it wouldn't have posed any issues but for the fact we did not want to get our boots wet. (With another day of hiking to go on this camping trip, wet boots was not part of the plan.)

With our bear-sighting taken care of yesterday today we hoped for an elk or deer... ok even another bear if it so happens. The road-walk at the beginning was just that... nothing to see but pines and an unnamed game tank. Dropping down to Barbershop Canyon was much easier than expected due to elk traffic along the cairned route down the slope. In the short jaunt to the Barbershop Canyon/Merritt Draw intersection we already had to cross the creek three times... just a hint of the probably close to one hundred more crossing throughout the rest of the hike.

Other than the dry-crossings and when leaving Maverick Canyon later, we followed pretty much the same route as elk had. And wouldn't you know it, all the drama for today would take place along Merritt Draw and Maverick Canyon.

First up was a really rough-looking elk cow... its coat looked so bad I wasn't even sure it was an elk. Unfortunately it crossed the draw at a fast trot, leaving no opportunity for a photo. Oh well, a minute or two later I got a photo of a wild turkey which the elk had collided with while crossing the draw. By the way the turkey was limping and leaning to one side it was obvious it had suffered an injury as a result of the incident.
Part of the reason for no photo of the elk was due to how many and how close together the trees were. I guess I'll have to be faster with the camera if I want any elk photos today.

Even though I was much faster with the camera when I spotted the next elk, while approaching with a large tree between us so would have a clearer shot when I stepped out, unbeknownst to me were two other elk off to the side which broke into a run when they saw me. I had but a split-second to decide... step out and get the shot I planned or swing to the left and try for two in the same shot. And of course, that momentary hesitation was enough to lose both shots... as well as two more elk exiting the draw to the other side as well.
](*,)
Although later we would loop back along the other side of the next ridge in the direction three of the elk went, we would not see any more wildlife the rest of the hike.

Quick little late afternoon exploration in a slightly different part of good Ol’ Maverick.
I’ve hiked all in and around the Merrit/Maverick area over the years and have always came across something of interest whether it be wildlife or water.
Made a retreat back to the truck when I first started due to uncomfortably close lightning strikes but after it dispersed it was perfect hiking weather.
On the way out of the canyon around 7pm I encountered a very healthy lone coyote that still has me questioning whether it could have been a rare Mexican Gray Wolf as the face was so much larger and rounded off than the typical yotes I always see.
Although unlikely it’s not impossible as I have a friend with crystal clear game trail photos of a wolf near Heber and I’ve heard of various reports of them throughout the rim and as far west as the Miller Canyon area.
I just saw some old photos of the high country jaguars taken by hunter Terry Penrod back in the 1960’s near Big Lake along with a few other cats on the Fort Apache Reservation which just gives fuel to my imagination that there could be a wolf or two out roaming the woods of Rim Country.

And not to forget the very real “Mogollon Monster” ;)

Not many hiking miles clocked today nor AEG, and a very long day with out and back driving miles, but so worth it for a beautiful cool, blue sky, Mogollon Rim day with plentiful Prime Autumn "Big Tooth Maple" colors :FG:

A longtime friend of mine, a HAZ member, and a very active Arizona Outdoor Travel Club (AOTC) hiking member was interested in joining me for this Autumn day trip. Since all the areas I had hoped to hike were in the same general area, I thought it would be a nice idea to first visit my favorite Mogollon Rim vehicle campsite which my friend had not previously seen.

I had four prime Autumn locations on my visit agenda this day, but one of the main ones I had hoped to view- Bear Canyon West Fork [ description ] , was presently closed for access due to the now active and managed "Pinchot Fire" viewtopic.php?t=9722 .

So, as it turned-out, with the 3.5 hour drive up and a short visit to my favorite campsite #3, we really only had enough prime daylight time to visit the following three Big Tooth Maple areas noted below with hike descriptions linked above:

This was a new (for me) and relatively easy "off-trail" loop hike that started/ended at Camp Grasshopper- Mogollon Rim-C/Site#3 at 7435 feet. This one was my first of two planned loop hikes on a nine day (7/20 to 7/28) vehicle camping trip (via Camp G/H style). I had originally planned to do this hike on my Aug'15 visit here but due to awaiting some minor surgery in Sept'15, I needed to postpone this one until my first return visit this July 2016.

Fortunately, Oregon_Hiker who joined me for the Aug'15 visit did hike this similar loop and enjoyed it, so I knew I wanted to include this one for my July'16 visit. Also having his posted GPS Route to download and follow was a big help. I added a few additional points of interest hiking in the Merritt Draw section that are documented by my posted GPS Route with "key" way points.

Maverick Canyon was the only close proximity canyon that I had yet to hike so I was really looking forward to this hike section. Maybe I was expecting a little too much, but comparing it to enjoyable hiking in middle/upper Barbershop Canyon, middle/upper Dane Canyons and the Bear Canyons, I was not that impressed with Maverick Canyon. I found it to be kind of too closed-in for much of the lower sections, heavy vegetation, with some slow going in spots due to rocks/downfall. A lack of scenic wall rock formations was also missing for me. I will say that the upper most section of Maverick Canyon before crossing FR9734P had a very nice, relatively large, quick access area of Big Tooth Maple that I bet would be a nice view location during our prime Mogollon Rim :FG: (~1st & 2nd weeks of October). To view this area in Autumn, the recommended plan would be to drive or hike access FR9734P from FR139 then hike down from the upper end of Maverick Canyon (see my "key" way point that marks this location of FR9734P/Upper Maverick Canyon). I should also say that Maverick Canyon does appear to have a few perennial springs seeping but I was only able to confirm one significant spring flow source in an upper section of the canyon that I did also mark with a labeled way point.

After exiting out of Upper Maverick Canyon and following Oregon_Hiker's Aug'15 route down into Upper Merritt Draw, I took a slightly different route over to view perennial "Whistling Spring" box (not accessible due to being fenced into one of the three Merritt Draw Riparian Enclosures). I then continued north along the side of this Riparian Enclosure #1 to its end then continued north to view another "UN-named" perennial spring. I then continued north along Riparian Enclosure #2 to it's end at most always reliable flowing "Merritt Spring" Box. I was very disappointed this visit to find that Merritt Spring was a minor seep with no flow from the ancient built cement-rock spring box

I had a late lunch at Merritt Spring which was cut short by a second monsoon rain storm I encountered this day.. the first being during my Upper Maverick Canyon hike section.. interesting what happens when you have a touch screen GPS (like my Garmin Oregon 600) & BIG rain drops hit the screen while trying to navigate off-trail

I continued north along middle Merritt Draw passing along the side of Riparian Enclosure #3 to its north end then taking a 90 degree right turn up hill to hike the ridge-line that runs parallel to FR139C back to my Camp G/H #3 to complete this loop. I should mention that if you have Verizon Wireless, there are a few areas along this ridge-line where you can actually receive/send text messages.

I did enjoy this 5.2 mile loop but would probably not plan to do the lower section of Maverick Canyon again (the middle to upper Maverick Canyon sections are nice and would be easily accessible for an "out and back" hike from FR9734P crossing with Maverick (see key way point location on GPS route).
