B, K, and I felt like hiking in some slightly cooler temps and Prescott fit the bill. Got to the trailhead before 0730 and first headed towards Watson Lake. Short road walk to get there, then we looped counter-clockwise around the lake.

Hiking thru the boulders was fun, and we made a few short exploratory side trips. The Flume Trail to the base of the dam was fun, although the water had a strong sulfur-type scent. After the dam, the trail got busier as we approached the main parking areas.

Once done with Watson, we headed over to Willow. While Watson Lake had been nearly full, Willow looked to be about half empty. We again looped counter-clockwise, walking in areas that obviously used to be submerged. The boulders were fun. Less people at Willow. We had lunch near the boat ramp. After that, we were mostly out of the boulders. Much warmer. We passed thru a section of huge cottonwood trees, then one more small area of boulders before finishing the loop.

Fun hike with a lot to see. Good day!

bruce and linda invited me to hike the watson and willow lake loops in prescott
we got going around 0715 with temps in the 40s
a short road walk to watson lake, then the loop trail counterclockwise
the route included parts of the peavine trail, lakeshore and northshore trail
nice to be around water
the east and north side trails wound through spectacular boulder terrain
we explored a few nooks & crannies, and checked out the dam
back on the road and across the dry willow lakebed
counterclockwise on this loop too
more of the boulders on the eastern part, with unique formations and striations
took a break near the boat dock and finished out the loop
a section of open flat terrain, then a more riparian environment under a canopy of cottonwoods
one more short bouldering section that topped out with a nice view
90% of this hike was new to me
was here most recently in 2013 to climb time zone wall with johnr1
missed the approach along the west side of watson lake
thanks for the invite!
nice to get out of phoenix for great weather, new terrain and good company :)

l, k and i headed out for a tour of watson and willow lakes.
a 7:20 start and low 40's felt great.
from the parking lot, we did the obligatory road walk to get to watson and start our ccw loop around the lake.

my favorite portions are once you get off of the peavine trail and on the lakeshore trail.
this trail begins the massive boulder maze.
we took a stop at the watson dam area to check the strong water flow.
to complete the watson loop, we hopped on the north shore trail.

next up was our ccw loop of willow lake.
after a short flat walk through what is sometimes a lake, we hit the boulder maze.
fun times.

after a relaxing lunch by the boat ramp, we did some more flatish walking to get to l's birding area.
this area features some of the largest cottonwoods i've ever seen.
a bit more bouldering, and we finished our loops.

good to get out with k and l again, in some cooler temps.

Was signed up for the 100. But due to an injury that prevented me from doing much on Labor Day weekend, I figured I'm probably in no condition to attempt that, so the primary goal was 50.

Started out early in Downtown Prescott, and basically followed 89 2.5 miles to the trail. Pleasant temps in the morning, nothing remarkable as I made my way up to Groom Creek trail 10 miles in. By then it was light out, and it was nice and cool for the climb up Spruce and down Smith Ravine.

On Homestead, it started warming up, and I realized I had basically no energy. I'll chalk that up to a quick turnaround from flying back across the country on Thursday evening... Didn't want to be struggling just 20 miles in, but you can't have it all. At least the breeze tempered the sun a little.

Ranch trail was where the misery really started. I expected the climb, having been on that trail a couple times, but I absolutely hated Badger Mountain Trail. Long, windy, exposed, with the type of switchbacks that were probably designed to ensure mountain bikers don't have to put in any effort at all. 11 miles to do what's probably a 3-4 mile drive... Hopefully I never have to see Badger Mountain Trail ever again.

Things improved a little on Sundog Trail, which I actually liked better than BM. Then Peavine, which is just...flat. By the time I got to the dells, it was 5pm, and I figured the sun would be down before I got to 50. The north side of Watson Lake was actually a lot of fun, and I liked trying to move through there as fast as possible. Probably the only part of the day that was legitimately enjoyable.

One of my friends was waiting for me at the Watson Boat Ramp with a beer, which was a nice surprise.

By the time I got to Willow, it was getting dark, and I had to use a light most of the way through there. There were also thunderstorms moving in, which was fun (they didn't get to Willow, but I heard it got a little crazy closer to Granite Mountain). I really don't recommend going through the dells in the dark, it definitely upped the difficulty a level or two.

After that section, I decided to make it official and not go for what would've probably been a last place finish. I'm starting to come around to one of my friends' views that 50 miles is a superior distance to 100.

I set out with Musicdebbi on the Peavine Trail in Prescott, based on Mare Czinar's write up in the Arizona Republic that morning. Musicdebbi had been pining for some fall color, and the writeup suggested we might find some here. She doesn’t have my enthusiasm for hills, so this seemed just right. We fairly quickly diverged from Czinar’s hike plan, as we left the boring Peavine for the more interesting Lakeshore Trail/Watson Lake Loop and hunted up some geocaches. The lake was pretty; there was a little color along the shore. We spotted many American Coots and Red-winged Blackbirds, an American White Pelican, a few Double-crested Cormorants spreading their wings, and a Spotted Towhee.

Decided to drive up North on a whim for the afternoon to visit Watson Lake. I’d only been once before and hiked on Peavine, so I was excited to do the loop! I totally meandered and took everything in as I was in no rush.

I actually missed the traditional parking lot turn and was about to turn around when I saw a secondary parking area called Lake overlook (and it was free!), so I parked there and headed to the right to start the loop.

Just FYI There was a ton of things in the air that would make anyone with severe allergies miserable without proper meds! Once I got off the Peavine trail onto the loop trail it definitely got more interesting. For a hike with not a ton of elevation gain, you’ll still get a great workout. Climbing up, down and all around the rocks is a bit tiring! It was also pretty hot and humid.

Highlights for me were the treehouse, the cool geology & seclusion of the middle of the loop and also the waterfall dam. I did also see someone’s shelter tucked away and I didn’t get too close since I was solo, lol. I only saw one other woman hiking solo on the loop portion, but did see a solid amount of people once closer to the TH.

The water levels were pretty low; looked less than half full and the shallow areas were covered in algae. The sunset was a total stunner which was an awesome bonus! Really glad I got outside and always love exploring new places!

This being my first time hiking the Granite Dells, I cannot attest to the remainder of the park, but at least along Peavine Trail, and in the Storm Trails, each trail intersection is marked by a map of the full Storm Trails system, with relevant terrain features, and a black dot indicating current location. In addition, all the Storm Trails' actual paths are marked by a spray-painted white dot every 100 ft. or so.

After picking up an excellent trail map at the trail register, we headed down the Peavine Trail. Such as “down” is. (Peavine only descends 200 ft. in 5.5 miles to AZ-89A.)

There were lots of birds — primarily geese, with some ducks and a single Great Blue Heron — on the shallow, muddy, southern shore of Watson Lake. They were too far away to shoot with my dinky pocket camera: I would have need a tripod and zoom lens. If you hear shots, it isn’t duck hunters, it is cops on the adjacent outdoor range. Mind the “CAUTION: Hazardous conditions exist. Please stay on trail.” signs. 😉

Captains Trail is only 0.72 miles, with 143 ft. of elevation gain. There’s a little bit of shade after a ⅓ of a mile, and some decent Watson Lake photo ops at the ½ mile mark. But there is better to come! Just before the end of Captains Trail, and the start of Easter Island Trail, there is a use trail off to the left. A few yards over is a rest bench and great views of Watson Lake, the Granite Dells and, in the distance, Granite Mountain. 📸

Easter Island Trail has even less shade than Captains Trail. After 250 yds. on Easter Island Trail, or maybe a ¼ mile from Peavine Trail, the vertical boulder which gives Easter Island Trail its name — it resembles the moai on Rapa Nui — came into view on our left. The trail wraps around the boulder, so Prescottstyle & I took photos from multiple angles & distances. It was warming up quick enough that Prescottstyle & I decided to forgo hiking out to the Flintstones-themed trails at the far end of the Storm Trails system. Instead, we turned up Big Rock Canyon Trail. 😅

Big Rock Canyon Trail starts just after the Easter Island boulder. It is only 0.28 miles long. Not exact the Appalachian Trail. While eyeing some shade, I got rattled. I looked high & low for the culprit, but could not spot him in the darkened rocks, branches and leaf litter. Prescottstyle & I kept moving. 🐍

Boulder Creek Trail is 0.53 miles. Since we just took it back to Peavine Trail, I’m clueless how much AEG it might have. Certainly not Matterhorn, or even Glassford Hill, levels of gain. Boulder Creek did have some water, but the flow was so light it was inaudible.

We took Lakeshore Trail and Peavine Trail back to the trailhead. Thick clouds were rolling in. We made it to the covered picnic tables just as it began raining. 🌧

First time to Watson Lake. I was expecting a simple walk around the shoreline with some rocks to play on, but the dells along the north shore were mysterious and we spent some time exploring. We found a makeshift shelter that had a definite creepy vibe. Lots of blood sucking mosquitoes fed on our group, especially while exploring along the stagnant north shore coves.

Another fun hike out of my Boots and Burgers book. I wanted to start from the Watson Lake Park. I didn't plan right and got there an hour before it opened. I just waited but I had to skip my lunch plan later in the day :( . Cool little area. :)

Joe through a dart at the Constellation Trail system and said, come up with something. I didn't know anything about this "Little Gem" so I started downloading stuff. There are 11 trails in the Constellation Trail system, totaling less than 5 miles. So that wasn't going to make the drive to Prescott worth it. I'd looped Watson lake before and enjoyed the heck out of it. I'd always wanted to loop Willow Lake also, so it was on.

The Constellation Trail System is a wonderful group of of short trails through a boulder wonderland. Officially it's a self-enclosed system. But as we found on the way back, there is a trail that connects this with the Willow Dells system and Willow Lake. The Ron James Approach Trail does not show to connect on the maps, but it does. There is no signage and it's not obvious though.

All but the east side of Willow Lake looked like just a means to connect the loop, but then we stumbled on the Cottonwood Spur. Some of the biggest Cottonwood stands I've seen. `

Willow Lake Video :next: https://youtube.com ... YbKg
Back on the Jan Alfano Trail and then we jumped over to Watson Lake, to do the loop there.

Watson Lake Video :next: https://youtube.com ... CTBU

The highlight on this loop is the Lakeshore Trail and the Over The Hill Trail, taking you to the Granite Creek Dam.

Granite Creek Dam, Watson Lake Video :next: https://youtube.com ... nVp0
A little road walk got us back over to the Willow Dells Trails.

Once again the hiking was great, except for 1/2 hour bug storm we ran through.

I really enjoyed looping these two Granite infested lakes, and the weather was perfect!

A great time out with the Squad.

On the day....A Gopher snake, Squirrels, Cottontail rabbits, Cormorants, all sorts of Ducks, Bluejays, Blue Herons, A hawk diving out of the sky right in front of us snagging a bird.

Watson Lake Circle Trail should be renamed “Links (not Lynx) Lake Circle Trail”

I did Watson clockwise and Willow counterclockwise. These loops are okay but in both cases the part in the Granite Dells is very cool while the rest is a bit monotonous. I saw very few people on either loop. Weather was great, a bit cool at the beginning but very pleasant later.

I know two guys who were a bit tired after a weekend of more miles than normal so it was a nice occasion to get in a chill day on the water. Before we enjoyed a relaxing lake paddle, we opted to hike the circumference trail.

Weird day, since none of us expected to have to fight our way through a car show in order to get to lake parking. After that we hit the trails which were pretty quiet for an urban hike. The first couple of miles were through the Dells and very rocky and followed some stupid white dots every couple of feet to stay on trail. Eventually the trail goes beyond where the lake is dammed and it becomes very lush and green. We walked over to as close to the dam as we could get to check it out. The water from the dam pools into quiet little ponds that are home to some very large frogs. Afterwards we checked out some coves where Chumley found a bum house and also a tree house. Eventually we picked up the Peavine trail and were able to walk very quickly back to the car. The Peavine trail
has nice views of the lake on one side, and eventually takes an interesting turn on the opposite side.
Interesting views- a police training facility and a firefighter
training facility where we watched the fire men in action. Neat.

So, basically our quiet lake hike turned into, avoiding a car show, chumley almost walking into a bums house, exploring a questionable tree house and then watching some firefighters put out a mock fire. :)

This was a nice and easy loop before our planned kayaking trip. We made a clockwise loop around the lake. The hiking is okay but the views are nice. Some sections are a little rugged but easy overall. The dam was really cool and that area is very lush.

Culture can only be bookended with adventure, and Watson Lake fit the bill.

9L wanted to get as many links in the shortest hike possible, so he went to HAZmasterB for research -- and Bruce's hiking history directed us to this gem of link heaven :y:
(Richard, I expect to see you up here in the next two weeks ;) )

There was some kind of car show in the Watson Lake Park, so we had to fight traffic to get in, but once there it was quite a peaceful hike. Only saw a couple of people on the circumference until the Peavine Trail. Below the dam is the most "strenuous" part of the hike and nobody goes there. It was stupid humid out and we were all soaked and ready for a swim. Too bad I wouldn't touch this water in a HAZmat suit!

Clouds made for some nice lighting though. South end of the lake is rather boring, Claire got to ogle some firefighters in action so that was good I guess.

We had a quick snack before continuing our adventure trifecta.

First day of winter trek to Watson Lake with Lynn and Chryssie (Skippy stayed at home). Parked at the Peavine TH near the Humane Society at the corner of Prescott Lakes Parkway and Sundog Ranch Road.

Perfect hiking weather (and it's winter time!) :D

From Prescott Lakes Pkwy trailhead took Peavine one mile to Lakeshore trail, explored granite dells along the shore, saw a treehouse revealing its presence up there by squeaking, returned on Peavine. Windy day, just one kayak on the lake.

The Peavine Trail is a wide, flat trail perfect for bikes, dogs, or running. It has many smaller trails that branch off of it that are real hikes. We started on the Peavine, veered off onto the Lakeshore and followed that for a while, then back onto the Peavine. We stopped at the Secret Cove for our lunch/break. This was our first hike in quite a while and our first with our 15 mo old strapped to my back. :) Overall a good hike and good views.

The parking lot at the Peavine Trailhead has a $2 fee but no fear, there is a credit card machine.
