I’ve long wanted to do the Big Loop at this amazing place, and I finally found some people crazy (i.e. stupid) enough to do this as a day hike.

My son and I met my friend at the Love’s near Wild Horse Pass in Chandler at 4am and off we went.
The weather was showing lows in the 30’s and highs in the 50’s. What I didn’t read was there was some snow the night before. We drove up Bonita Canyon Road and we confronted with a locked gate about 2 miles short of the trailhead at 745am. “CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC (including hikers). There was snow on the ground and some ice/snow on the road. We drove back to the visitor center and contemplated doing the hike up Rhyolite Canyon, but we found a ranger that told us the road would open up shortly.

They opened up the road right after 9am and we finally got on the trail about 915am. That was 2 hours later than we originally planned.

The sun was up and the snow was fast melting, but there was enough to cover most of the trail and the north-facing areas. It was very beautiful and a real treat to see the rocks, trees, hillsides covered in the white stuff.

My only hiking experience at this monument was part of the Echo Canyon Loop back in the 1990’s when I lived in Tucson. I had taken my young sons here in the past, but we just went to the view points. So, I kinda knew what to expect, but this place really blew me away.

We opted for a CCW loop going down Echo Canyon connecting to Sarah Deming Trail/Balancing Rock Trail and down/up Rhyolite Canyon. We made detours at the Heart of Rocks and Inspiration Point.
This trail is simply phenomenal. One of the best trails I have been lucky to hike lately. Well-constructed, maintained and signed all along the way. The elevation was broken up into nice little sections, with no crazy climbing required.

The areas that weave through the hoodoos are the best parts. The canyons are pretty, but the rocks are the star. The Heart of Rock was especially beautiful. That little detour was a little rougher than expected, but you cannot beat the scenery. Inspiration Point is also worth the 1 mile r/t. The best view in the entire monument.

We didn’t break any speed records, as I took my time taking pictures and enjoying. The snow was a total surprise and wonderful bonus too. The crazy hoodoos and epic views are the star.

We finally arrived home in Mesa about 830pm. A very long day, but so worth it. This loop get’s my full-hearted recommendation, DO IT, you will not be disappointed.

On our return trip to Lubbock (Land of no hiking) we stopped off at Chiricahua National Monument to hike the Ed Riggs-Sarah Deming-Echo Canyon Loop. We have done this before but it is such a nice hike we decided to do it again. Arrived at the park just after 7 and were just about the only people here, a few campers and one other car at the trail head.

Headed out on the Ed Riggs Trail then on to Mushroom Rock Trail. Took a side trip out to Inspiration point from the Mushroom Rock trail. Great views super clear skies and good visibility. Could see Rincon Mountains, snowcapped Mount Graham and of course the Chiricahua’s. Played around with my camera and the remote Yifi connection with my phone, easier to just set the camera on delay and push the button and run to get in the photo. After screwing around with the camera remote for some time we headed over to the Heart of rocks loop, probably the best area of this hike second only to the Echo Canyon Trail.

No sense describing the Heart of rocks loop you just have to see it for yourself. Lots of interesting rock formations, some named some you make up your own. It was along this section of the hike that I noticed the shadows on the ground had a funny shape and then I realized there was an eclipse happening today, forgot all about that.

We took our lunch break down in Rhyolite Canyon just prior to the junction with the Echo Canyon Trail. A light flow of water in the canyon along Echo Canyon. This is such an interesting section of the hike you really don’t notice that you have quite a bit of AEG. We finished this hike about 3:00 and had to head out because were staying in Portal that night and it is 24 miles over a dirt road to get there and the Portal Lodge closes at 6:30. This is the only place to eat in Portal also. Luckily the road had no traffic so we made good time.

The shuttle service is back up and running, the trails are now free of ice and the rock slides have been cleaned up ... time for a hoodoo hike!
Shuttle picked us up at Faraway Ranch, picked up 8 more at the campground and drove us all up to Massai Point for the hike back down to Faraway Ranch.
Sunny clear blue skies with a slight breeze all the way down.
Such an amazing place throughout with Inspiration Point & Heart of Rocks the 2 big highlights.
Wildlife spotted - 10 white tail deer, 20 turkey, 1 coati, several hawks and Mexican jays.
Solid hike, solid partner.
I sure hope this place does NOT get National Park status ... I like it just the way it is!
:D

On our 2nd trip to Chiricahua National Monument we wanted to explore two of the more popular sites; Inspiration Point and Heart of Rocks Loop, in a single-day hike so we came up with this route.

Navigation
The route starts from Massai Point and follows the following trails in succession: Massai Point trail to Ed Riggs, Ed Riggs to Mushroom Rock, Mushroom rock to Inspiration Point (and back), Big Balanced Rock to Heart of Rocks, and then the reverse/return after completing Heart of Rocks Loop in a clockwise direction. The result is a long but doable day hike. Navigating this route is pretty straightforward; each of the trail junctions is marked with a sign and the trails are easy to follow. The route was somewhat difficult to discern in portions of the Heart of Rocks loop but there are painted footprints on the rocks in areas where the trail is less obvious. It is possible to do the Heart of Rocks Loop in either the clockwise or counterclockwise direction. We did it clockwise and recommend that approach as many of the named hoodoos will appear in front of you as you go along. Going in the opposite direction you will likely have to stop and look back at the landmarks frequently and may miss some if you don't see all the signs.

Trail conditions
well maintained trails throughout for the most part. A few rockier sections exist and the Heart of Rocks Loop has some good steps up on rock rather than dirt trails. There was a tree down over the trail while we were there, but it was not a problem to step over.

Fees
This is in the Chiricahua National Monument so National Park Service fees normally apply. Both times we were there no one was in the ranger station and it was free to enter. It is not a very crowded park.

Weather
We went in early April and it was warm but not uncomfortably so, we also had the advantage of a partially cloudy day. Spring and Fall are probably the best times for this hike unless you like the heat. Wind can be significant at higher elevations.

General Comments and Musings
Inspiration Point and the Heart of Rocks Loop are probably the best locations in Chiricahua National Monument to see the unique hoodoos and geological features of the area (I speak from experience having hiked pretty much all the trails in the Monument over 2 trips). The Heart of Rocks Loop is particularly entertaining as it has many of the "named" hoodoos that the Monument is famous for. The Loop also puts you very close or even in-between to the Hoodoos in a similar fashion to nearby Echo Canyon Trail. Inspiration point was also a worthwhile addition as it gives a good view of Hailstone trail and Sara Deming Canyon. There was also a logbook in an ammo can at Inspiration point.

As a route, this combination of trails is moderately difficult. No one section is terribly hard, but the overall mileage and elevation gain does add up. Understandably, mule tours were the historical method for getting to the Heart of Rocks Loop. While we were there we saw a few other groups on the trails but only two were hoofing it to Heart of Rocks.

This was a good route and probably the easiest way to see these two sites short of a mule tour. We had a lot of fun doing it. Make sure you bring a camera for funny Hoodoo pictures!

Up at 2:30a, home at 10:00pm, is close to the definition of a day hike.

Denny provided the impetus to get this one done. If he keeps reading his food book, we'll get to a lot of other new areas. :y:

We saw some of flocks of deer, including 2 dudes with nice racks on the way in. Also were treated to some Coatimundi while hiking. : :D

We were spoiled all day with perfect weather and pristinely groomed trails. Temps ranged from 50 to no more than 68, with a breeze.

We did a clockwise loop including side trips to Sugarloaf, Inspiration Point and Heart of Rocks Loop.

Lower Rhyolite Canyon Trail, starts off this track in the pines with sneak peeks at the hoodoos.

Left on Upper Rhyolite Canyon Trail and you start the climb to the fun.

Bypass Hailstone Trail and hit Echo Canyon Trail. This is the crème de la crème in the park. Here you are walking amungst the tall spires. Wow, just wow.
Echo Canyon Video :next: https://youtu.be/Ow ... Dx1M

A hike up Sugarloaf Mountain Trail provides a great 360 overlook of the area.
Sugarloaf Mountain Video :next: https://youtu.be/T- ... WNjI

Ed Riggs Trail and Mushroom Rock Trail lead you to the next highlight side trip.

Inspiration Point Trail, is only a 1/2 mile one way. The destination packs some more incredible views.

Big Balanced Rock Trail leads you to..... duh.... how does it not fall over. After the geometry lesson the
amazing Heart of Rocks Loop is right there. Recommend doing this Clockwise for the views and to take advantage of the signage.
Big Balanced Rock & Heart of Rocks Loop :next: https://youtu.be/o6 ... -slI

The Sara Demming Trail starts you back downhill. It was on this trail, in the tall pines, that we saw our swarm of Coatimundi. I found this to be an enjoyable wind down trail.

This ones a must do, if you haven't.....

Thanks for putting this together Denny plus Driving/Dinner.

One word..... Hailstone

Joe and Bruce joined me for another hike out of my Boots and Burgers Book. The book has a shorter loop to get to the Heart of Rocks Loop. Bruce added some extras for our loop so we could get our monies worth out of the long drive. We were glad he did as some of the extras were pretty cool too. All the trails were nice with Echo Canyon, Inspiration Point, Big Balanced Rock, Heart of Rocks being the highlights. Throw in Joe and Bruce, a couple Coatimundis, and great weather and it made for an awesome trip. Thanks Gentlemen! :y:
