Kelly had a plan to hit some peaks in the middle of the metropolis. I had hiked some of these peaks back in 2009. Nothing since, so I was game.
Fun day bouncing around to the different trails and peaks. Great lunch afterwards at El Super Tacos.
Good times. Thanks Kelly! :)

I hadn’t tackled either of these since @Tortoise_Hiker and I completed them as part of our 7 Summits Challenge back in 2011.

Starting at Lookout Mountain, the chill quickly diminished as the climb began immediately from the trailhead. The steeper section was a bit rocky, but the burn was short-lived, with the top reached within half a mile.

The trail I took down was slightly slippery, leading me through Lookout Mountain Park.

Next, I circled around Shadow Mountain and reached the peak from the east. Initially, I had planned to descend to the north and complete the Shadow Mountain loop, but the ridgeline looked far more interesting, so I headed west instead.

The day wrapped up with some neighborhood walking to get back over to Lookout Mountain and complete the adventure.

It was a nice day exploring one of the city parks.

Quick after-work summit with the western sub peak thrown in. Solid but fun scramble to the top of that one - tried years ago and found flying ants swarming the top.

Nice views from the top, per every Phoenix peak.

Not too shabby of a hike completed three weeks post appendectomy. Well organized, fun romp but likely one and done for this circuit. I was happy to have Kriket along for company on summits 2, 4 & 7. Dreamy Draw start sixteenth of 104 finishers. 8:55:44 total time.

Phoenix 7 Summit Challenge (2nd time): Begin at 0500, and complete 7 hikes for a total of 22.8 miles with AEG of 5600 feet within 12 hours.

1) Sidewinder to Ridgeback Overlook (2.85 miles, 483 feet AEG, 44 minutes): Began at 0520. Many people had started at 0430, and a number of them were finishing as I was starting. Completely dark except for the headlamps. Flat for almost a mile, then a nice ascent to the peak, then back down. Nice warmup, fun.

2) Lookout Mountain Summit (2.89 miles, 640 feet AEG, 53 minutes): Flat / mediocre for the first mile, then more interesting after that as the slope increased. The last 200m consisted of light scrambling to reach the peak. This was fun.

3) VOAZ peak from Dreamy Draw Trailhead (3.14 miles, 537 feet AEG, 52 minutes): First 200m on concrete walkway. Some nice views of the surrounding peaks. The official route was not marked, and there were multiple forks, so there was occasional confusion about which way to go, but we figured it out. This felt a lot shorter than it was, and felt like we reached the "peak" quickly. This was fun too.

4) Piestewa Peak (2.33 miles, 1151 feet AEG, 84 minutes): Better than last year. Just kept climbing up, stopped at the top for about 5 minutes. My knees were feeling it on the way down. This area was supposed to be closed off for the event, and parking was no problem, but there were still many people on the trail.

5) Las Lomitas Trail to Ranger Summit (3.62 miles, 940 feet AEG, 74 minutes): Las Lomitas trail was boring. Ranger Trail became interesting with decent views after it crossed the road and began climbing. There were great views at the top. Made some new friends on this one.

6) Alta Trail (3.28 miles, 786 feet AEG, 72 minutes): The official starting point was not at the trailhead but further back on the road. This one had a number of switchbacks, and felt a LOT longer than it actually was. The views were decent.

7) Holbert Trail (4.65 miles, 991 feet AEG, 126 minutes): This one was fun, with good views along the way, some mini scrambling, and a lot of people (many of whom were doing the 4 or 5 summit challenge). Good vibes all around.

There was also a total of over 2 hours of driving between trailheads. The sky was overcast most of the day. Overall a fun day and a good challenge. Hamstrings were pretty sore at the end. Spent about 10 minutes at the festival afterward, enough to pick up our free food/drink, then head back home to the shower and hot tub.

Early morning hike at Lookout. Started from the TH off of Greenway and 16th St. Got started a little after 6am. I went up the north side hit the peak and then did some use trails to the west that I hadn’t done in awhile that created a loop. Not mush in miles, but the climb up Lookout provides a good, if short workout. Encountered 5 hikers. No wildlife. Great weather.

We started later than we would have liked because there is now a gate to the Cholla trail. Somehow the gate opened, and we started. A short ways up, was a Phoenix P&R employee in a truck trying to make us all feel guilty for being in the park off hours. It seems the graceful thing for him to do would be to open the gate instead of playing a self-righteous sheriff of the Camelback Mt fiefdom.

It was strange only needing a headlamp for the very start of the climb up Camelback and for it to be light at the summit. After a short break, we headed down to Echo Canyon TH where we took another short break before continuing through Paradise Valley and over to Piestewa Peak, to the top area where we took a longer break, got water and ate. From there we headed towards Piestewa Peak.

I don't know what was going on with me up Piestewa. I had no strength and was having a terrible go of it. About 2/3 of the way up, at an area with the last bench, I pulled off and sat down for several minutes. I decided to not summit and headed back down to Dreamy Draw. I went pretty slow all the way and got to rest for a while waiting for the others to catch up.

After the rest, I decided to continue with them to North Mountain and decide what to do then. I felt fine on that stretch and was able to complete that section without trouble. Lunch was waiting for us at North Mountain, so there was good food and more rest. I decided to try to complete the rest of the hike. I kept things steady up North Mountain and didn't get too far behind. I was fine from there to the start of the climb up Shaw Butte. Again, I kept things steady and wasn't too far behind to the summit, where we all regrouped before heading down to the North Mountain Visitor Center.

After another rest there, we headed off to Lookout Mountain. It was getting dark on the climb up Lookout and we needed to pull our headlamps out when we reached the steep stuff. We made it to the summit and were happy there was no more climbing, just the descent to the trailhead where Tequila and beer was waiting.

There're two gaps on my route. The first is from where I stopped on Piestewa Peak to close to Dreamy Draw. The second is from the Lookout Mountain summit to the parking lot.

Chose this hike to see where Wendi and I were at condition wise and I am happy to say we both made it to the top and even back down without too much exertion. We signed up for a tour a month form now of the TNM Upper Dwellings, which is a gain of almost 700' in 1.5 miles which made us both a bit nervous before this hike as it's been 10 years since we bagged our last peak of any kind. So if anybody has done both hikes and knows how they compare let me know. We will probably try peak 2429 or perhaps North Mountain in a week or so to see how we do.

As far as this hike goes not much has changed. The trail was well posted to the saddle, a little loose footing, and scrambles around rocks. Not as much traffic going to the top as I had expected, seemed like everybody was on the circumference trail. Temp was nice and cool and good views form the top, all in all it was a good day. :)

Phoenix 7 Summit Challenge: Begin at 0500 (the toughest part of the challenge), and complete 7 hikes for a total of 25 miles and AEG of 5600 feet within 12 hours.

1) Apache Wash Trailhead - Sidewinder - Ridgeback - Ocotillo Loop (5.04 miles): Began at 0520. Went counterclockwise. Completely dark except for the headlamps. Mostly flat, with a few ups and downs, with a hill near the end. Nice warmup. Decided to run down the hill, tripped on a rock, fell hard, and got a cholla stuck in my right glute. I couldn't see the cholla, so it remained there until the end of the loop when a staffer kindly removed it.

2) Deem Hills Ridgeline (3.2 miles): Nice, simple out-and back with a slightly steeper climb. Overall enjoyable. Views were decent, especially on the back end. A lot of views of the surrounding neighborhoods.

3) Dixie Summit Trail (3.17 miles): This was fun. Another out-and-back. Some nice views of other peaks along the way. A number of switchbacks to reach the summit.

4) Lookout Mountain Summit (2.83 miles): Mediocre for the first mile, then more interesting after that as the slope increased. Some fun, easy scrambling to reach the peak.

5) Shaw Butte Trail (3.9 miles): This one sucked. First mile flat and boring, then a steady, unrelenting ascent (20-30°) on a wide dirt road, with a few flat stretches and a couple turns. Views are poor the entire way. Very tedious, felt like it took forever to trudge up this one. The views at the top are the worst because the radio towers clutter up the summit.

6) Piestewa Peak (2.37 miles): I've done Piestewa a few times. It hits different when you've already done 18 miles prior to tackling this one. Took a number of rests, thought about giving up, then finished it.

7) Holbert Trail (4.76 miles): Felt better after surviving Piestewa and slamming a Red Bull. Nice trail. Fun. Good views along the way and at the top. There is a parking lot at the top, and the lookout area is crowded with people who drove up there, which diminishes the experience. Everyone on this trail was exuberant that this was the last hike of the Challenge, so good vibes all around.

Averaged 17-20 minutes/mile for the first 3 summits, 21-23 mins/mile for the next 2, 48 mins/mile for Piestewa (including all the resting and sobbing), and 29 mins/mile on Holbert.

There was also a total of over 2 hours of driving between trailheads.

Excited for next year!

Practice warm-up hike for tomorrow. I have been doing tourist hiking so much that I feel a bit out of real hiking shape... but when it's a Superbloom, what's a Tibber to do  . Anyway, I parked below the TH and hiked clockwise. The Brittlebush seems to be blooming in sections so I photographed it as I wrapped around the mountain.

The lizards were out. In fact, one cracked me up as he raced by and then stopped, he looked like he was panting from running past me, but was still able to show off with doing push-ups. Later as I was hiking on the western side a beautiful red-tailed hawk zoomed past me and another bird in pursuit. It was so awesome to see I clapped my hands.

The clouds whisped through the sky, thus shielding the sun and added shade to go along with a nice breeze for the last part of my hike. If it's like that tomorrow, I should do okay on the scheduled hike, even though it's supposed to be warmer. I continued the hike and ended up documenting/photographing the patches of Brittlebush as it was bright and beautiful; much prettier than my pictures depicted.

WATCH 2:17-3:40PM, 3.36 mi, 1507-1765 elevation. 134 bpm/171 max burning 549 calories. Temp 69.8 Sunny and 8% humidity.

I still got it.  Had planned to just do my workout loop clockwise but as I topped the second hill that comes from the TH I looked up at an alternate trail.... yep, today is a good day with this nice weather (well Kelly, I guess we should have done our hike :( ).  And so up I went.  I forgot how straight up and long this hill was.  Some quail distracted me for a few moments so I tried to get a couple pictures; but wish I had my regular camera that was sitting on my desk at home.  The quail were very active throughout my climbing and hike today.  I just kept trudging upward and upward taking some use trails next to the scree-filled area that is now somewhat rutted.  I was glad to get to the top and took a quick look around.  I did eye the next level that you can take straight up the side to the Lookout Summit.  I think I tried that once and decided it was too tricky.

So I took the high trail around the summit to the east.  There is that one step down that requires a slight rumpage and then you're back on normal trail tread.  My far views were not as clear as they could be. I actually ran into a female hiker up on this high trail too but the only hiker I would run into until I got up toward the summit.  I wrapped my way around until the next up section that takes you above what I call the implanted boulders.

Half way up I got a phone call and I'm glad I picked it up as it was BCBS about my OTC debit card.  I told the agent I was climbing a mountain, she seemed taken aback, but I told her I was glad she called to tell me they had mailed out the new card (the last one didn't have any numbers on it).  And then I finished the climb pausing at this boulder section to look westward before heading up again.  The first part of this next part of the climb was not bad and the last steep part to the side of the summit was steep but short and it's on a rocked trail.

I got to the west side of the summit climb where I said hello to a couple hikers sitting and then up I went east to finish off the last of this climb.  It doesn't seem so steep from here for some reason and just involves careful foot placement.  I don't mind the up so much but I'm not overly fond of the return trip.  As I made my way over to the summit I looked north and saw New River Mountains still covered in snow rising above the mesa.  It's really quite the sight and once again, I wish I'd had my real camera.  But the funniest thing is someone asked me if I had climbed it and I said no, but she thought it was Humphreys :o .  I said that wasn't Humphreys and yes I had climbed Humphreys years ago, ha! I got up to the summit and said, "yep, I still got it."  I saw a jug of water with three roses next to the summit pole and as I looked over the top I smelled... you know, the thing.  She was coughing so I hope she got over it.

I left the summit. I really don't like the steep part as you're almost climbing down.  I tried to be careful.  I crossed over to what I call the back side (south) and once I got to the saddle, I decided to try the loop west around the south side.  Part of it is almost straight down and I was glad I had sticky shoes.  I think that section continues to deteriorate rapidly but once again, it's short.  As I was heading west on normal tread again I noticed that the Brittlebush is really starting to bloom on this side.  I tried to get a couple pictures but I don't know how well they will reflect the scene.  I also was reminded, no poppies.  And then there's that last step down back to the regular trail.

Now I continued clockwise around the western humps but once I got to the first saddle I decided I would do the summits of the next two as I haven't done those in so long I don't remember the last time.  The middle hump has two approaches, one on the west side and one on the east.  The east wasn't super evident but I opted for that.  It had an interesting exit and the summit was flatter and longer than I thought it would be.  I went down and then up and over to the next hump.  I was thinking Kelly would really like this cuz Lookout's Circumference would be pretty boring but she'd like these summits.

I've been up on this north summit before but it's been awhile.  There are two exit points and I started on the one but then went to the other as I was intrigued where it went.  As I got to the other side of the rock outcropping it has a bit of an alcove so that was kind of cool.  The trail then swept east but I hesitated to watch some quail and a rabbit but couldn't get a picture.  Before you know it, you're back on the regular trail.  I then decided to go south on the high trail rather than going to the bottom. It is just so green I ended up taking some more pictures; I can't seem to stop ](*,) . I came down what is considered the actual Circumference Trail and then hooked up with the bottom part of my northwest loop back to Tonto.  I was proud that I could still do that scrambling.  I've always really liked it; except for the down part.  The quail were quite active on this part of the hike and I saw another rabbit, the second of the day.

I did document the route I took with the summits.  I'll have to do those summits more often, even though it's not really a workout type hike that I normally like to do. I also added some pictures that I took of the north and western mountains the day after the snow fell.

First actual hike in a long while. Got out with a buddy who wanted to take it easy, so I thought this would work out well. Got a good burn on the gains, but otherwise some nice hiking on well defined trails. Quite a few people out, but thankfully all were nice enough.

Short, after work hike. Did a simple up and down on the Lookout. The layoff really showed. Bit of huff just to make it to the top. Worth it. Weather was ideal.

Today is my gym class day but I was up until midnite after finally getting home from a football game in Payson that my niece was participating in as a part of the Pom Squad. We (my brother and family) also met up with cousin Dennis and had dinner at the casino. FYI - the dinner was great and that's why I'm mentioning it. So if you're in the area, it's a good place for a nice meal. The other interesting thing is I find the Pom/Cheer Squad spells a lot when they cheer. I don't know if that's normal cheering for these days or I just forgot from all those decades ago when I did the cheerleading thing (except I was a college cheerleader and I don't think we spelled much in our cheers  ).

Clockwise. I was glad to see the clouds in the sky and feel the slight breeze as I started up the hill. I parked at the hill below the TH again as it gives me a tad more mileage and elevation. As you round the east side the shade is starting at this time in the afternoon and as I started west, the breeze was much more vigorous and I loved it.

I circled the western humps and then headed on the trail below the western Lookout Summit and back down the summit trail and pavement to Tonto 3. It was a nice hike. There were probably a dozen hikers along the way and I passed a few. Also a couple birds catching thermals, fun to watch. Near the TH it looked like some sort of possible wedding event.

WATCH: 4:15-5:30PM, 3.37 miles, 1522-1788 elevation. 137 avg bpm/160 max. 53% Zone 5 Max, 33% Zone 4 Anaerobic, 13% Zone 3 aerobic burning 534 calories. Starting temp 84.1, partly cloudy and 35% humidity.
