Janelle and I had planned the Ridgeline a while back, and Michelle was a last minute addition. For the past week or so, I’d been keeping my fingers crossed that the weather wouldn’t be too warm. It was warm, but we had a great breeze most of the day, thank goodness.

We set up our shuttle early, then got started from the Crosscut TH. Easy walking over to Siphon Draw, where we joined the masses making their way uphill. We took our time, chatting with other hikers along the way. We skipped going over to the Flatiron, but later I realized Michelle had never been up here. If I'd known at the time, we'd have gone over there. Oops. Instead, we headed over to 5024. After a quick break, we dropped off the east side, down a freshly cut trail, then reconnected with the Ridgeline trail.

Nice views along the ridgeline, but very dusty. It was worth it for that good breeze. The route is mostly easy to follow, with a few vague spots here and there. Had lunch at the saddle where Hiero meets the ridge. East of the Hiero junction, the trail gets messy and eroded for a while. I've never liked that stretch, and now I kind of hate it. Once we scrambled up to where the trail runs below 5057, it was in good shape again. We skipped 5057 and continued east.

Descending Carney is never fun, but at least there was shade. Once at the bottom, we headed east on Goldmine for a mile back to our other vehicle at the Lost Goldmine East TH. Good day and hike!

I revised my stats down a bit due to some scribble in the chute and around breaks. Mileage was still a little higher than expected, but matches pretty closely to my watch and Janelle's stats. I am still loving the grip and comfort of the T1 trail runners, great shoe. I have some doubts about the longevity I'll get out of them, but that remains to be seen. I actually ordered another pair, and Janelle ordered a pair for herself.

Happy 250th birthday Marines!

Slower than molasses getting up and down but I made it. Flatiron first, then the peak.

Great weather. A nice breeze on the way down.

Needed to stay close to home this weekend, but also needed to get outside. Even though I could have chosen something easier, the west-facing approach of Flatiron is appealing for a summer hike since I can do essentially the whole hike in the shade if I get an early start.

I was on the trail at 5 am. Passed two guys on the way up and met a couple coming down when I neared the top. Otherwise, no traffic on the upbound trail, and I had the iron all to myself.

I have a hard time going to Flatiron and not tacking on 5024, so up I went for a bit more solitude and 360 views.

On the way back, I veered off slightly to check out the plane crash memorial. They've added a thank you plaque to the Sheriff and first responders since I was last there.

On the way down, I passed around 10 folks even more crazy than me and getting a later start.

At the Jacob's Crosscut junction, there is a new sign, indicating that day hikers are no longer allowed to take the trail that skirts along the campground on the way to/from the Lost Dutchman parking lot. Instead, they are supposed to take the Crosscut trail.

On balance, the day was "nice" for July. Temps were high 70s at the start. Went through about 2.5 liters. Was home by 9:15 am.

Another morning stroll. The temps were in the 70's with clouds and a breeze. Not like July in the valley.
Nice day with only a few others out.

Started 2pm Friday from the peralta trail head. Went up bluff springs trail and deviated on an arroyo early on. That was a good lesson to learn early. Spotted a few water pots while off trail. We found our way back to the intersection with terrapin and continued on Bluff springs to dutchman. Stayed on dutchman until charliebois. This was the make or break for us, and fortunately plenty of water to be had... also a turtle in the water! Very friendly.

Day 2 we continued on dutchman all the way to lost dutchman s.p. The highlight was a large rattlesnake that was clear with us the trail was hers. At the s.p. a very kind ranger welcomed us in. A snickers ice cream plus 4 hr respite under the sunshade during prime heat before round 2. A roadrunner visited us for some water, guessthat is when you knowits hot. 4pm we started the climb up siphon draw. It was slow and difficult. We carried 8 liters each up the climb. The views were fantastic and only got better. Had a cowboy camp on flatiron and a benevolent ringtail fox paid us a visit. Long day. Great day.

Day 3
Started with the sunrise and off to Ridgeline... way finding quite a bit. Sumitted superstition mtn. Then continued on until Dacite (this was a great decision) which j-shaped us back towards weavers needle to the peralta trail at Fremont saddle. Dacite was totally new territory. Really loved it. Finished the loop down peralta to the car.

It was hot and we planned for it. We had 8 liters each at all water fills, plus starting wet. It was no joke out there with the 100 degree heat, however we never felt out of comfort or safety. I sleuthed quite a bit from this community and am grateful for it.

Headed out towards First Water Road to hike some of the Jacob's Crosscut Trail. on the way out I spotted Wally on his way back early at 5:30am :-k . Turns out he was bailing on some plans with unforeseen circumstances.

From the TH I hiked 3 miles out and turned around, then hiked up Siphon Draw for just over a mile. On the way back down Siphon Draw I took the Palmer Mine Trail over to Prospector's View, then back down to the Crosscut and back to the TH. Hadn't been up or down Siphon Draw in over a decade, so it was nice to see the views getting further up the canyon after so long. It was also nice to chase the shade for a bit to keep hiking in cooler temps as everything was getting warmer everywhere else around me.

Parking lot was nearly empty once I got back, in great contrast to times I've parked there recently in the winter months. It's not really that hot yet, so I was bit surprised, but not disappointed.

After lunch I hiked up to the praying hands feature. I went out on the Siphon Draw, took the Prospector View trail over to the Treasure Loop and then the spur to the hands. It was quite hot, so I sat in the shade near the hands for a while.

Saw 2 bighorn ewes on the Prospector loop section. Seems they may be common there. Still nice.

Perfect weather day during the roller coaster of weather we've been having this March! I couldn't have been more lucky. A group of friends had planned to hike the Ridgeline & I tagged along last minute. All the usual fun going up Siphon Draw. I made a quick stop at 5024 while my friends took a break. Continued on along the Ridgeline, taking wrong trails here & there. There are a lot more trails along the Ridgeline from the last time I hiked it. We would follow one for a bit, it would become clear that the route became impassable or unnecessarily dangerous and we would backtrack and a very well-used trail would appear. I made another quick stop at 5057 while my friends waited and I found a letter in a bottle hidden under a boulder at the summit (but no ammo box and no summit log). The letter in the bottle was numbered #9. I wonder what other peaks letters are hidden at. Caught back up with my friends and we oohed and ahhed at the "raging river" of water flowing along the north side of the trail as we made our way towards Carney Springs trail.

Finally got out for Daniela’s birthday hike—more than five weeks late. Headed up to Flatiron first, then over to 5024. Cut it pretty close on time, we knew we had to be done by 1330 to get back in time for Daniela to get her youngest daughter from school, we finished at 1331. So no children were abandoned today, but just barely. Saw a fair amount of other hikers, but it is Friday. Still better than a weekend. Gorgeous weather today, cool and mostly cloudy. Best part (besides the hike) was I wore a teal/blue shirt and leggings, and found a brand new pair of teal Salomons in my closet, which had been in there a couple of years. Amazing match on the outfit 😂

Hiked Siphon Draw with Victoria and Kristine (Juan and Alyssa opted out wanting something easier).

First Flatiron hike of the season! It was solid, we got an early (but not too early) start and the weather was great. It was cool and there was a nice breeze to cool us off.

The trail was popular, lots of new people who hadn't done it before.

There was no water in the draw, no recent enough rains

We showed Kristine our small detour around the slippery gravel section which proved popular.

A good hike we will have to do more with Kristine, she likes to do the tough ones.

Tackled this one from First Water Road because of an earlier start possible, instead of waiting on Lost Dutchman Park to open. I've recently scoped the McKellips TH, but it seemed sketchy. When I left, it was 95 in Tempe, but 84 in AJ, so it didn't seem that bad. They're building a new informational sign at the first parking area where the crosscut for Jacob's Crosscut begins. On the traverse over, there were these weird birds (single white spot on each wing) chirping and lurch flying very low all around me and the dry bushes and grass were already active with lizards. The trail was empty on the ascent up Siphon Draw, in fact, I didn't see anyone else on this hike. After leaving Siphon Draw, I thought the gully ascent was quite tame by Supes bushwhack standards. You could tell a great many hikers have crashed through here, perhaps misguided Flatiron hikers. There were a few areas that could use a slight prune. The temperature at the summit of 4175 was breezy nice, plus by then a good cloud cover had established. The original goal was to just return the same route, but after downing some early liquid courage, the northern descent began to strongly draw. I peered over the edge and thought of Ms. Hogan's recent quote in AzHighways, "Oh, it goes". :) I knew the Motherlode route was directly below, so all that had to be done was get to it and the rest would be easy-peasy. I hadn't worn my gaiters to the summit, but now put them on and dropped in. You basically descend directly north from Peak 4175. The dry grasses are very slippery, almost slicker than when they're green and wet. There are a few steep shelves to downclimb here and there and were a few cairns, but for the most part, one can descend and link into the Motherlode route, then the Treasure Loop to Praying Hands route back to Jacob's Trail. There were three deer on the last section of the crosscut. I headed over to finish off Silly Mountain afterwards since I was in the neighborhood.

I love this hike, but it's been a few years since I've been all the way to the peak. Low temps put this one in play so I decided to go for it. An unexpected benefit was a nice breeze and cloud cover, even a few sprinkles, on the ascent. That lasted until just before I reached the Flatiron. The remainder of the hike was in bright sunshine.

I spent much of the uphill passing and being passed by a man named Kieth. He's training for something big in Colorado so he also chose to take advantage of the great weather to hit the Flatiron. While chatting up top, Kieth saw a couple of people on the peak. He wondered aloud about the route. I offered to show him. He accepted, so we bagged the peak as well.

Perfect day for a Siphon Draw hike. Very few people on the trail and you couldn't ask for better weather in May.

Searching for a few of Forrest and Weir's routes that were listed in a February, 1971 Arizona Mountaineering Club newsletter. I think I've identified the Cobra, but Begging Dog still eludes me. I didn't see any fixed hardware, so I'm assuming these are trad climbs with simul-raps. Wandering through this hoodoo grouping was definitely a treat with many other possible climbs besides these classics. There are a few very large Pinyon trees still thriving in this unique area. Looking forward to getting back up there with a climbing partner!

Great day on the ridgeline. Group of 4 started from Lost Dutchman State Park and arranged a key exchange with another group of 2, starting from Carney Spring.

We hit the trail about 7 am. Siphon draw was as busy as I've ever seen it. After leaving behind the Flatiron crowds, we had relative solitude until Hieroglyphic Canyon, where we met our key exchange and started seeing a handful of 5057 peakbaggers.

The route over/around 4869 and 4790 are always a little tricky when traversing from west to east.

Scrambled down Carney and saw my first diamondback of the year about 0.25 from the TH. He was a healthy one!

Beautiful weather for a day on the Ridgeline.

Lunchtime hike. I hiked up Treasure Loop, across Prospector, and back on Siphon draw. Weather was great. Trail is a little rocky in spots. There were just a few purple flowers on lower half of Treasure Loop and just a few Poppies on top half of Treasure and top half of Prospector. Out of the million Brittlebush out there I only say about 4 with flowers. Jojoba looking pretty healthy. Very green out there but no big flower show yet.

RouteScout crashed and dumped all my routes today, so the included route for this hike is not an actual track, but one I created in a map editor. Also kind of lame and sad that Peak 3845' had a summit jar essentially full of garbage. Scouted several areas searching for existing and possible climbing routes. Most definitely some with potential if one enjoys big approaches. :)

Instead of the Official Route to Peak 4102, we turned left off of Siphon Draw near Siphon Dome (The Gatekeeper) and ascended the Ripped Shirt or BASE jumpers gully. The route manifests with a few cl.3 ledge scrambles before reaching the Lost Dihedrals hanging valley north of The Three Old Maids. We didn't remember the previous route we'd taken in the past and wandered around within some mildly annoying vegetation, eventually finding a passable gully and topping out on the plateau near the yellow-hued peak. After a short summit break, we hiked southeast, then up, merging into the upper part of the Reverse Flatiron route. There were a few neat areas of verglas on the way to Ironview Peak. After another summit and our first beer, the hiking was considerably easier down to the Flatiron (another beer) and eventually out via Siphon Draw, the Palmer Mine bypass and the east side of the Treasure Loop.
