Didn’t have a particular agenda today, which was a good thing since the road in Madera Canyon was closed at the Amphitheater lot. I was the first one there at about 9:15.

I picked up the Nature Trail and headed to the Roundup lot. There was patchy ice on the trail but I had no issues. From there I studied a map to see what I could do. There wasn’t time for Wrightson, but I figured I could make Josephine Saddle via Baldy for an early lunch, then take Super to Pipeline to Kent back to the car.

Below 6000’ was patchy ice; I’d brought spikes but never felt the need for them. Above 6000’ was fresh powder and no ice, which made the going easier. Well, easier than patchy ice. The snow definitely added a bit to the workout.

Only one set of prints in the snow besides mine. The fellow ahead of me went up Baldy toward the summit, while I stopped at the saddle for a hot lunch.

After lunch I headed down super, which had no prints from humans but lots of wildlife: bunnies, deer, small pawed things not bunnies, and a healthy mountain lion.

Sprung Spring was completely full but frozen solid.

About a half mile or so below the saddle I met several deer, some with antlers. One of the bucks seemed a little perturbed with me, snorting and stamping his feet while approaching me, so I stopped gawking and resumed my descent.

The shortcut to Pipeline recorded on HAZ was not my usual connection, and far less pleasant. It felt more like an animal trail and was quite steep in places, which meant sliding in the snow and getting my socks wet. It was new to me so of course I had to take it, but I think once was enough.

Pipeline was beautiful as always. I was dreading Kent, but with the snow it wasn’t too bad. Fewer issues with loose rocks.

The connector trail back to the parking lot was nice; because it is less often used the patchy snow wasn’t icy like it was on the Nature Trail or low on Baldy.

Made it back to the car by 2:30, and the parking lot was full.

Decided to do a pre-sunset hike around Madera. Not crowded at all which was nice and saw some deer and turkeys. Water flowing nicely and leaves still are nice and colorful.

First hike with a new friend - the day was a bit of a comedy of errors, but we laughed alot and it was memorable.
First we had to turn around and go back to Rancho Sahuarita to pick up the hiking shoes that she forget in her truck when she hopped in mine - she didn't realize it until we were just a mile or two from our destination.
When we finally got there, the weather was perfect, the flowers still blooming and the creek in fine form. Parked at Whitehouse and hiked upstream ... a few other folks out enjoying the day, but not crowded. We enjoyed a casual stroll up the trail and when we crossed the big bridge at the Amphitheater area, we heard the first thunder ... walked down the road and by the time we got close to the lodge it was raining harder and harder - we were pretty well soaked when we dashed into the gift shop. Made the best of it by ordering up some coffees and browsing around the shop for about 20 minutes, then I obtained a plastic bag to wrap my camera in and we resumed the hike. It was interesting to see how just that short spurt of hard rain had turned the formerly crystal clear creek into muddy brown.
Drove Yuki out to the Elephant Head TH to check that out just for the heck of it.
Followed up by a pickleball lesson for me - I really enjoyed it, but even that was cut short by wind and lightning. More pounding rain - briefly - as I headed east on Sahuarita, plus quite a lightning show towards Tucson as I was driving. Monsoon 2022 doesn't want to end.

Couple of short hikes, before and after my massage ... a treat I will not be skipping on any of my future visits! 😁

Amphitheater area to lodge and back, and Whitehouse down to Proctor area and back - did not check Proctor waterfall, or my favorite hidden falls since I figured access would be tricky with the high water.

I had a couple hours to kill before check-in time at the Santa Rita, so I decided to finally hike a bit of the upper trails - in all my trips to Madera Canyon I've mostly just stuck to the middle and lower canyon except for hiking the Bogs/Kent Spring Loop once or twice.

The name of this trail is confusing but I guess I was officially on the Vault Mine, even though ebird calls it Carrie Nation? What a lovely trail - definitely made me want to hike UP the mountain sometime soon. Kept my eyes open for the Elegant Trogons, but I never look for them too hard since I usually see them every year just by being in the places they are - that said, I still have not seen any yet this year.

Only saw a handful of people along the trail. Rained lightly for much of the hike, but the tree cover is thick enough that I rarely noticed it ... didn't have to cover my camera until I was almost back within sight of the parking lot, then dashed for my truck.

After check-in, I walked down the Creek to Whitehouse, then back up to the Amphitheater ... everything is SO green and the creek is flowing stronger than I think I've ever seen it - couldn't even cross it easily.

Birding at the lodge was amazing, as usual. I had a Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher calling in the tree behind my casita as I was unloading my stuff - my cooler and backpack got temporarily abandoned outside in the rain while I went to look ... and soon after, I had a Painted Redstart catching moths right on my porch. At the lodges's feeders, I was able to see and photograph the rare Berylline Hummingbird - only my second one ever.

Safe to say Madera Canyon/Santa Rita Lodge is currently my happiest place!

Quick overnight birding getaway with Santa Rita Lodge as my basecamp, as usual.
Had a couple hours work in the morning, so I didn't reach the area until about noon. I went straight to the De Anza Trail at Tubac bridge, intending to add Rose-throated Becards to my year list (I saw them once before, a few years ago). The Santa Cruz River was barely hanging on here, but the habitat is bonkers - absolutely teeming with life and activity, even in the oppressive mid-day heat. Spent about two hours meandering and enjoying myself ... I did see a Becard - sitting above a pair of nests - and also got my first Yellow-billed Cuckoo of the year.
Next I hit Sahuarita to pick up a few items, then on to the Canyon and the Lodge. Birded the feeders for a few minutes before I even went to my casita, and met a few of my fellow guests ... Mary had just arrived from Florida for her first visit to SEAZ, and she was already pretty dazzled. There was also a trio of mammalogists from back east, here for a conference in Tucson ... and later another mammalogist all the way from Switzerland would join the group.
I spent an hour or so hiking the canyon Nature Trail solo ... the creek only has water in a few sparse places - I sure hope monsoon fires up for them this weekend as expected.
Back to the Lodge and the feeders in time to catch a surprise Violet-crowned Hummingbird! Pretty rare visitor for Madera Canyon - I've only seen them at Paton's in Patagonia before - and a thrilling score for my new friend from Florida, where they generally only get one kind of Hummingbird. Mary and I and two of the mammalogists wandered across the street to the owner's house to scope out the power pole in front for the famous Elf Owl ... had to go up the stairs into his yard, since the current nest hole is on the backside, facing his house. Soon Steve came out and said we were welcome - but the owl wouldn't come out until about 8pm ... Mary abruptly had her long travel day catch up to her, and took off for bed but two of us went back and enjoyed watching and photographing the owl with Steve. I'd heard and recorded Elf Owls before, but this was my first look at one - they are the smallest owl species in the World, at less than six inches in length and weighing barely over an ounce ... but they are fierce predators all the same.
Plenty of deer in the canyon as usual, but surprisingly no coatis seen this time ... and apparently I just missed a small bear near the Lodge while I was hiking downstream.

Wonderful few days staying at the Santa Rita Lodge - hiking, exploring, birding, relaxing, reading and making new friends.
The Lodge is awesome - perfect combination of rustic and updated. The sound of the creek right outside is hard to beat ... I left the windows wide open the first night to enjoy the soothing sound - then woke up freezing at 3:30am. 🤣 I was the only person in the eight casitas and my new friends were the only ones in the six cabins the first night, with just a couple more arrivals the second night. Office has a book lending library and a large selection of dvds - I borrowed a book about the 1958 boy scout tragedy on Wrightson - it was a good read.
Took several solo and several group hikes along the creek from the lodge downstream to Whitehouse and Proctor and back, plus the Nature Trail and a few road walks up to the other lodges and some night birding. The creek and waterfalls are flowing vigorously and the whole canyon is very lush.
Wildlife was bonkers. Deer, coatis and of course birds! I got a selfie with a coati. And mesmerizing bat videos at the hummingbird feeders!
My buddies were visiting from Pittsburgh, so they got several life birds easily but I couldn't get them a Trogan.
Weather was fantastic, and bugs were few. Very nice steady rain this morning as I was packing up and leaving.
I've already booked my next visit. 😁

Started from amphitheatre trailhead and took nature trail - super trail - agua caliente to the saddle and back. The mountains are alive again with water, flowers and brilliant green everywhere. Very nice.

Missed stepping on a rattlesnake by less than an inch :o

Following three days of heavy rain in parts of southern Arizona, I figured there would be an abundance of water flowing in Madera Canyon (no brainer  ). Super wet of course, and what I saw did not disappoint! :D I sampled a few of the trails, as well as the area down by Proctor Road. It was a mo(i)st enjoyable day. After the prolonged drought we had been through until the first of July, this was truly a blessing. :)

Being an Arizona native, and having previously lived in Tucson for 9 years, I'm almost embarassed to admint this was my first time in Madera Canyon. What a nice little gem! A bit crowded, but it was Thanksgiving weekend. There are tons of great, family friendly trails around here. We're going back to explore more and head up to Baldy/Wrightston!

I had not been down to Madera Canyon since June 2016, so a visit was overdue! I usually go during the "leafy" time of the year, so seeing it in the more barren look of winter was interesting. Parked at Whitehouse Picnic Area and hiked down to the waterfall area by Proctor Road and back. There was good flow in the creek thanks to our recent generous storms. On my way back I encountered a group of bird watchers along the trail just north of the bat houses. They had a spotting scope set up, so I eased up to them and asked what the attraction was. It was a male Elegant Trogon, who was being very cooperative and allowing good looks and photos. I got to see it when pointed out to me, but the real treat was seeing it through the scope. Beautiful! :D Unfortunately, when I finally got a chance at a clear photo, my camera had turned off and by the time I got it ready again, the bird had moved. Typical. Nevertheless, that was pretty special and made my day!

Last week while hiking to Roger's Rock, I continued on past Roger's Rock uphill along what appeared to be a fairly good trail. The trail was rather steep heading straight up the ridge. Not knowing were it went I eventually turned around and headed back down the ridge. Found out later that the trail connects up with the four Springs Trail. With a break in the hot weather I decided to finish up that section of trail.

I started at the Bog Spring trail head around 0600 and took the Bog Spring Trail to Kent Spring, then on the Four Springs Trail. (Still can't get four springs along that trail, Sylvester Spring, Kent Spring and Armour Spring makes three, what is the fourth.) From the Four Springs trail I took what I am calling the Roger's Rock Ridge Trail down to the Pipeline Trail. I took the Pipeline Trail South (upstream) to the Baldy Super Trail and returned to Bog Spring Trail Head via the Madera Nature Trail. Bog Spring and Four Spring trails climb pretty steadily to the Rodger's Rock Ridge, from there it is pretty much downhill back to the Trail Head.

Bog Spring still had water in the trough along with abandon sleeping bags, packs and food containers and trash left by illegals. Didn't look real recent though. Kent Spring Trough was dry (don't know if I have ever seen water in it) but the stream nearby was running pretty good. The Roger's Rock Ridge Trail Was easy to locate along the Four Springs Trail and exits north right where the Four Springs trail crosses the ridge. Still not sure if I would rather go up or down this trail, going up is a workout but going down is harder on the knees and higher risk of injury. The stream at the junction of the Roger's Rock and Pipeline Trail was still running where the trail crosses the creek. The rest of the hike back to the trail head was pretty uneventful and was finished by 1030 with the temperature still in the low 80's. There was a pretty strong breeze from the Southwest most of the morning, felt a bit cold in the darker canyons in the morning but later in the day felt pretty good.

From the amphitheater: up BS#156 and over to Kent Spring, continuing up to the crest on Four Springs trail, south on CT#144, down OB#372, down Nature trail to start. Generally good trail conditions on Four Springs except the east-west section near Armour Spring, where the track is faint and overgrown, with some pink ribbons to mark the route. Went back up KS#157 to close the Bog/Kent loop.

Another Madera Canyon Meander..
Decided to start this hike a little lower down Madera Canyon than the usual location at the end of the road. I had never done the upper portion of the Nature Trail, so this was from the Amphitheater parking area. The trail promptly climbs up above the canyon to avoid private property. The result is some nice views before it drops back down into the riparian corridor and skirts by the Chuparosa Inn before reaching the Mt. Wrightson Picnic Area (Roundup). You can stay in the creek bed and avoid hiking along the usual route to the Old Baldy turnoff from the parking lots, reuniting with the Vault Mine/Carrie Nation Mine trail near the bench.

The trail up to Carrie Nation Mine is through a beautiful section of forest with plenty of shade. Gets steep in places, but what else is new? Since the monsoon storms are just beginning, the creek was dry except for a few seeps and a little flow at the mine. I heard trogon(s) several times along the hike, but as is usual, no sightings (elusive little devils). Encountered several birders on the way to Carrie Nation, as this is a real nice section for that activity (away from the more crowded Super & Old Baldy Trails).

On the way back down I decided to walk the road to my vehicle instead of returning on the Nature Trail. Reason was the cloud cover I enjoyed earlier was now gone and there would be more elevation gain that way with plenty of exposure. Plus, the road is a bit shorter and all downhill. I enjoyed passing by some of the lodging along the way.

Across the road from the Amphitheater parking lot is another access point for the Four Springs Trail to Kent Spring and beyond (with connectors to Bog Springs and the campground). One of the things that makes this area so appealing is the multitude of loop hike combinations available. :)

Day 7 of my Fall Foliage Tour...

After Chasing the Storm over the past couple of Days, I ended up in Madera Canyon on this Day, still chasing some Storminess...It finally started clearing up in the Afternoon and since the Color in Madera Canyon looked like it was Peaking, I decided to take a Hike. The Creek also appeared to be Flowing nicely...It was a very nice Hike and I eventually Looped back to my Vehicle, had a Snack and then returned to 1 Spot to take Advantage of the waning Light.... :D

This was a nice late fall hike without getting into anything too strenuous. Trails include the Carrie nation Trail, Jack Mountain Trail and Madera Canyon Nature Trail. I've lived in Tucson all my life and have never been on any of these trails. Usually doing some of the more lengthy trails. Really liked the Carrie Nation Trail with it's Carrie Nation Mine and Mining equipment. Lots of history on this trail. The Carrie Nation trail is quite a work out, not long but very steep toward the end. The side trip to Jack mountain from Auga Caliente Trail (.1 mile) was worth it for the views of Mount Wrightson, Florida Ridge and Mount Hopkins.

Headed back down the way I came and then headed South down Madera Canyon along the Nature Trail. This is a nice easy gently sloping trail. One of those trails you don't admit doing but since I did the strenuous Carrie Nation trail along with this I can admit it here. Nice views of Florida Ridge and mount Wrightson.
