From the upper TH. Hot and out of season. Dan Saddle seems lower than 7,000' as it is so hot. Most of the north slopes of the range are pretty worthless terrain after decades of bad management, several hot fires, and the general harsh conditions. Some people are in to it, but frankly I don't care much for the Catalinas anymore or Tucson hiking in general. Pinalenos and Santa Ritas are much nicer.

Hiked with a friend, doing this loop counterclockwise and starting from the Oracle Ridge TH. My plan was to start at Red Ridge TH, but when I arrived there was a "CLOSED" sign ](*,) even though I carefully checked the USFS Catalina District website and they showed that both Red Ridge & Oracle Ridge trails were OPEN. I drove back to Palisades to speak to someone in that office, and her response was "yeah, I show that trail as open as well, but the Forest Services does a TERRIBLE job of communicating." She called someone at the Forest Service she knew in Sabino Canyon, who had the same response, so she said it was my call but to not worry about it, if the USFS really wanted it closed they should communicate it to the rangers and on the website. She also said that she has heard of the public up there taking the closure signs and moving them around to other trailheads? When I asked why, she said "I guess people are just being mischievous." : app :

To avoid further confusion I decided to start at Oracle Ridge TH, but there is no real parking at Oracle Ridge TH currently, it's now all marked off as "no parking". I spoke to someone a guy at the fire station, who told me to park in the small dirt space across from the fire station however, in one of the "no parking" areas and that it was fine.

I must say, that the crazy amounts of monsoon rain, the ground instability caused by the fires and the apparent fact that no one has done anything to maintain these trails, has definitely made these trails more challenging. Experienced hikers can generally keep up with the trail and a GPS helps at times when it seems to disappear, but you're basically hiking a ridge each way with an abandoned road at the bottom to connect them. The wildflowers, buffelgrass and other plants and weeds were THICK, and usually waist high but at times head high. You really have to be careful in it with your footing, as you can't easily see what you're stepping on, and if there is a critter in the weeds or if the ground is deteriorated under the weeds and unstable. At one point I did almost walk on a black rattlesnake, thankfully he shook his rattle one quick time to cause me to freeze until I figured out it was a rattler and where exactly he was.

I was also surprised to see the mining or excavating, whatever that was they were doing on Marble Peak. That peak is pretty torn up now, they have cut switchback roads all the way up it and even turned part of the Arizona Trail/Oracle Ridge Trail into parts of their highway. Noises from the excavating rang through the canyon between us as we passed by and you could see the heavy machinery doing their think up there.

Catalina Camp Trail was also choked out with waist and head-high growth, and at one spot there has been a washout that makes it a little challenge though not impossible to pass. What an amazing spot the camp cabin is! I walked up and took a peek around, even inside the cabin, and was surprised to see that it looks like it is still being used by someone, there was even a sleeping bag on the bed and other supplies along the edges of the cabin as if it has been recently used. I post pictures here of it. The chandelier in there is just priceless! :app: The creek was flowing well at the junction of Catalina Camp and Red Ridge, a few gallons per minute still and no stagnation. It was a very nice break spot.

Of the three trails, actually Red Ridge is by far in the best shape, which made me scratch my head again why that sign was at the trailhead. There was a small tree down over this trail just above the creek (where you pick up Red Ridge to go back up), and of course the closer you got to the top, the amount of wildflowers choked out even this trail in spots, but for the most part it was actually pretty decent and much easier to follow.

I really hope the Forestry Service finds away to put more time and attention into the Catalina trails. The more time passes, the worst shape they are getting into. I would suspect the Oracle Ridge Trail would be managed by an AZT trail steward, and I'm not sure why that's not happening right now, but so many of the USFS managed trails in the Catalinas just are closed and unattended, and having no one routinely walking on them is making a bad problem worse. There, that's my :SB: !

parked at red ridge TH and did the road segment down to oracle ridge first. oracle ridge is about as i remember it, everything mostly burned, but it has been that way for a long time. dusty and rocky. catalina camp trail is really getting overgrown. no real burn damage though. the camp is in good shape and the cabin perseveres. had a nice break there.

red ridge is a steep climb. it is mostly burned, especially the upper part. the trail itself is in good shape though.

although this hike is mostly (but not all) through burn, i still enjoyed it.

I few months ago I came up with idea of doing a "circumnavigation of Mount Lemmon". I needed some miles, so decided to make an attempt on a late June weekend. Maybe it was a bit brash to try such a route during the summer months.

The goal was to start at Butterfly TH, go down to Crystal Springs trail, up the Oracle Control Road, down Oracle Ridge to Dan Saddle and then down to Catalina Camp, then down to CDO, up to Samaniego Ridge and then Lemmon Trail, then head down to WoR, back across Marshall Saddle, and connect with Sunset to finish the loop. A solid loop if I do say so myself, probably pretty close to a marathon with 6000+ feet of ascent.

The plan held up until Catalina Camp, where it started to get warm, and I really started to question whether I had it in me. This was the last bail-out point, and I took it. Luckily there was a trickle in the creek, so I was able to fill up before heading up Red Ridge (the first time I've had the, let's call it a privilege, of seeing this trail in the uphill direction). Surprisingly, I saw three other people on Catalina Camp and Red Ridge trails. Thought I was the only one stupid enough to be down there in late June.

When I got to Red Ridge, clouds had rolled in, and I was feeling much more alive. So I added a few miles back on by heading up the road to the ski resort, and heading down Aspen Draw (where it even sprinkled a little bit!), before taking a Mint Springs to Marshall Saddle detour.

Ended up a pretty good outing still, even if the whole circumnavigation has to wait until another (possibly cooler) day.

This was part 2 of the hike we did in February doing the lower half of this trail. Last time we hiked from Oracle all the way up to Rice Peak and back down. This time, we started from the upper TH at Summerhaven on top of Mt. Lemmon and walked down to the base of Rice Peak. I had originally thought this upper section would be a total distance of 11 to 12 miles. It would really only be barely 10. So I had the idea of trying to hike down to Catalina Camp and to the junction of the Red Ridge Trail. We decided to go to Rice Peak first and then on our way back up, we would decide at Dan's Saddle whether or not to lose another 900' of elevation before having to climb back up 2000' to get back to the car. We had lunch just before Dan's Saddle, made our assessment, and decided to go for it. I had 3.5 liters of water left, which was right at the limit of what I was comfortable with. We ended up a quarter of a mile short of the junction when we decided to head back up. The temperature was getting noticeable warmer as we descended, and the trail was pretty steep and gnarly in sections as it went past the Catalina Camp. I ended up running out of water a half mile from the TH, so it was a good call.

At the start of the hike we kicked out about 5 deer below the trail that ran over the ridge and out of sight. We kicked a few more out as we hiked along the trail, and I was thinking they might have been the same deer. At one point there were two above the trail running through the trees. The must have been yearlings because their coats were still kind of spotty. Every time we saw them, they ran like crazy and wouldn't stop. I mentioned to Wally that they really seemed spooked and he brought up the fact that this is mountain lion country. Oh yeah. I was never able to get any pictures because by the time my camera was out, turned on and focused, they were gone.

The climb back up from Catalina Camp was a bit of a slog. Going up from Catalina Camp to Dan's Saddle seemed a lot harder than from the saddle back to the car, even though the AEG for both is roughly the same. Luckily, as we ascended, clouds came rolling in, giving us some shade and breezes. I think if the sun would have been hitting us directly, I would have run out of water a lot sooner.

On our way home, there were some very dark storm clouds rolling in from the southeast. Hopefully that's a sign of the monsoon arriving soon. Lots of clouds in the sky in Tucson as we left, none at all in Phoenix.

Saw 2 other hikers all day, who looked so similar that I thought it was the same guy doing an out and back hike. Nice to get this trail completed and mark off another hike in the 100 Classic Hikes in AZ book.

We started at 6:30 thinking we would beat the heat, but it was already scorching on Oracle Ridge by seven. Luckily there was some intermittent spots of shade and some lightly flowing water at the creek crossing. However, overall the hike was much warmer than what we wanted for the pups. I guess you need to start at 4:30 in the morning to beat the heat on this one. Heat aside, we still enjoyed the hike and the dogs did fine, just a few extra breaks in the shade and a lot of water consumed. We didn’t feel like walking the dogs back on the paved road, so CJ put on her running shoes and got the car while I waited with the pack.

No rain or snow in the winter, locked out of the woods a week before Memorial Day and too hot to hike dogs at 8k, Arizona sure is a lovely state to live in lately. Thankful to be completing my annual summer exodus from here soon.

I found myself in Tucson to pick up a couple of dogs, so I figured why not hang out a day and hike Lemmon? After all, it is spring break.

I got this hike idea from @carriejane a couple weekends ago, when she pondered (after seeing a trail heading down from Oracle) if there was a way to loop Red Ridge Trail with Oracle Ridge during our hike to Rice Peak. When we got back we looked on HAZ and found a description for the exact loop she was thinking of, so I decided to try it out today.

Overall, I thought this was an excellent little loop. The cabin is a fun stop and the creek was flowing nicely. Red Ridge Trail is a stout little climb, but the trail offers some excellent views and the few remaining trees from the past forest fire add a little charm to some of the sections along the trail. I would not want to do the road walk on a busy weekend, but it was not too bad today. There were a lot of cows in the lower section of the loop.

I finally got this county high point out of the way and it really was not by design. Carrie and I had chosen Oracle Ridge as a hike to beat the 80 degree temps they were calling for in the lower elevations and it was not until I looked at the route when we got to the trailhead that I reallized Rice was along the way and at about five miles from the trailhead, it seems like the perfect turn around point.

This was my first time on this portion of the AZT and I was generally impressed. The trail was in pretty good shape and the views were nice. In particular, there are some nice views of the Pinalenos and Graham of course, eye sore telescope and all. Rice is not the most spectacular peak and the final approach is a road walk, but it was still a pleasant little spot to take a quick break. We returned the way we came, but did discuss a possible loop with Red Ridge and then were pleased to see there is a description for that in HAZ, so maybe another time for sure. We finished to some very rain.

**Edit. Well the lord giveth and the lord taketh. A pleasant hike to Rice Peak, but apparently not the Pinal County High Point.

Runkeeper shows an elevation gain of 5400 feet. Most of that came in the first 6 miles as the
sun shone bright in a blue sky and the temperature quickly rose into the 80s. The moisture
soaking my back, all sweat.

Tonight, the wind is blowing in a storm with a touch of snow forecast for the town of Mt
Lemmon four miles behind. We're hunkered down with the rain guard affixed and the stakes
holding our tents.

We climbed into the 7000-foot range with pine, streams, and large granite formations. It
reminded me of portions of the Sierras on the PCT.

Day hikers began appearing on the trail. A sign a town is close by. Thirty miles east of Tucson in
the Catalina mountains is the town of Mt Lemmon. It has the distinction of hosting the
southernmost ski resort in the continental U.S. A mile walk up the canyon road into town. A
large chocolate chip cookie, water resupply, another mile on blacktop and we were back on the
AZT.

With a storm forecast our goal was to drop from 8000 feet to Dan’s Saddle at 6900 feet. Made
it by 6PM and set up camp.

Miles: 16.1
Total AZT: 405

Dropped a vehicle at American Flag and drove up the Control Road (back road up Mt Lemmon) to the trailhead.

Took the Oracle Ridge trail back down. Trail descends from 7800’ to 4400’. There is a surprising amount elevation gain given the overall loss in elevation. I’d done the ridge out and back to Apache Peak a couple of times and once from near Peppersauce to Rice Peak but needed the top part of this and the link to American Flag.

Afterwards we grabbed dinner and a motel in Tucson with the plan to get the other vehicle the next day.

Good loop trail to cover the top of Mount lemmon and the major trails on the north side of the mountain. Oracle ridge down to Dan Saddle is easy to follow and pretty much all downhill. Good views to the north and and east and to the west of Red Ridge and the Reef of Rocks. Once at the Dan Saddle, the Catalina Camp Trail #401 heads west and down toward the Hartman Mine and Canada Del Oro Trail. The Red Ridge Trail heads back up to Mount Lemmon near the Hartman Mine. The east fork of Canada Del Oro runs in close proximity to this trail once past the Red Ridge Trail junction. There is usually water in this in spring. There were no issues following this trail. The Canada Del Oro Trail heads north up Canada del Oro Canyon and follows along the creek until about the last mile where it climbs the west side of the creek to a saddle. The Canada Del Oro Trail was easy to follow with the exception of the very lower parts were the brush and ferns were so thick that it made the trail hard to see. I had no problems with losing the trail though. Be careful of snakes along this portion. From the saddle the trail meets up with Sananiego Ridge Trail and continues on a good climb to the Southerland Trail. from here the trail continues to climb to the Mount Lemmon Trail. Trail is in good condition but a bit steep. Once on the Mount Lemmon Trail it is fairly level walking to Radio Ridge over Summerhaven. I continued on down a road to Summerhaven and back to the Oracle Ridge trail head. This is a good trail to take in late spring when the snows have melted and the streams are running.

This was the Passage needed to fill in the missing gap. With the completion of this passage, we've completed 732 contiguous miles, stretching from The Mexican border to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

We started this passage with mixed feelings. Our hiking partner, Joe, for the entire AZT to this point, at the last minute had to back out with an injury . :stretch:
Dave had already arranged for us to be delivered to the top of Lemmon by one of the members of his church, (Thanks Dave and Fred), so we were locked.

We already knew this was going to be a pretty long day @ around 24-25 miles with a sizable AEG (Even though we were starting at 9,100' and going down to 4,400'). To our surprise, the gate to the top, was closed at the restaurant, so we added another 1.5 miles and 700' of AEG.

The weather was perfect most of the day. There were small patches of snow remaining at the top, but nothing on the trail. It did get a little warm in Wilderness of Rocks, but nothing too bad.

We all tried doing our best Joe imitations and jokes to mimic him being there, but when Denny busted into the classic "Cinder a Letter", we knew it was a lost cause.

Highlights for me on this hike was the Wilderness of Rocks trail. I'll never tire of all the unique bolder formations and running water. The Marshall Gulch Trail was sweet, as well as the views from Oracle Ridge are nothing to sneeze at.

Low lights included the 70 plus trees we had to hop over or go around on the way to lunch at Summerhaven, and the 40 more from there to the North TH at FR38. Also the Oracle Ridge trail can be loose, Rocky, and steep in places. No place for someone with a bum ankle.

We took a short (Steep) side trip to Rice Peak to enjoy the views for a moment.

Turning off the Oracle Ridge Trail and on Cody for the final push we donned our headlamps. A little over an out in the dark later and we were to our ride home. Dave had placed a car the previous day. :)

A huge thanks to Dave for getting the whole shuttle thing set up : app : and to his friend Fred for taking us to the top :y:

Started the day on top of Lemmon. Friend of mine, Fred, graciously gave us a ride to the top. Only made it as far as the gate next to the Iron Door Restaurant. The gate wasn't open, which meant our trip got an extra mile and a half in length. We hiked to the outhouse by the electrical substation, where we needed to start, and the guys needed all needed a potty break, so I took a quick jog to the top of Lemmon and back...then after these two little hikes, the hike REALLY began!

On the way up in doing segment 11 we took trail #5, so this time we took trail #5A back down to the Lemmon Trail. First time on the Wilderness of Rocks trail, really nice. Then to Marshall Gulch and up the road to Summerhaven for lunch. Denny and I decided to cheat and get a soda and candy bar before heading out ... nice!

After lunch in town we headed to the Oracle Ridge Trail, where things turned pretty scarred and ugly. Amazing after all this time, it is not bouncing back...not even grass coverage or anything on the ground, just all dead. Nice views on the ridge though, incredible views! The further down the trail we went, the better things looked though.

One nice thing about today is that I started the day climbing the highest peak in Pima County and that afternoon we all scaled the highest point in Pinal County, Rice Peak. The peak itself is still in Pima County, but the edge of the mountain is still higher than any other place in Pinal...so the day was a two-fer!

Denny was a little nervous about us hiking out in the dark, but we didn't need lamps until we turned onto the Cody Trail, and all went well.

And the most exciting thing about the day is that when we arrived at American Flag Trailhead, the 3 of us had the Arizona Trail finished from Mexico to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon completed!!! Awesome.

Surprised by seeing virtually no wildflowers all day. The only place we really started to hit even a few was on the Cody Trail...we saw them in our headlamps.

We're nearing the end boys...just 5 segments to go!
