Hiked Marcos and Gudalupe Ridge with Kelly, then Corona de Loma to the saddle and back on National/Mormon Loop etc. Nice and cool with a little breeze.
Lots of people out and parking lot full when we finished.
Thanks Kelly! :)

I took advantage of the cooler temps for a longer workout hike on SoMo, and John opted to join me. As boring as SoMo can be, it’s still better than a morning of working. Got started up Telegraph at 0745. Less clouds than I was hoping for, and I whined accordingly.

East on National, with a quick stop at the old lookout. Continued east to Corona. Nice breeze at times. Down Corona, then back west on Desert Classic and Guadalupe Perimeter. Stopped at the Helipad. I gazed at a nearby house for sale that I really like. Talked myself again out of buying it. Finished up on Desert Classic. A few more clouds by the finish.

Good workout and good conversation. Thanks, John, for joining me on this one!

Linda and I met at Desert Foothills at 7:45AM and headed up to Telegraph Pass, once again entering the side of South Mountain I rarely visit. I think this made it five hikes from four different SoMo Trailheads in the past 10 days for me, several of those in the foreign lands of the west side...not bad :). We looped clockwise on National with a stop at the old lookout, and Linda shared her knowledge of SoMo history and off-trail points of interest that I've passed many times but never noticed, so it was educational in addition to being a beautiful morning to spend outside.

It stayed mostly sunny throughout, but it was in the 60s when we started and low/mid-70s at the end...days like this are numbered as summer approaches. I'd been on at least parts of all these trails before, but it had been years for some, and the helipad was a new stop for me as we looped back on Desert Classic and Guadalupe Perimeter. Didn't see even a single fireman, but I noticed the first saguaro blooms of the season earlier this week, and there were a lot more out there today. Nice hike, fun morning and conversation--thanks, Linda, for setting this up!

Kelly thought we had been avoiding Old Man's trail, so off we went. Up Geronimo, down Corona de Loma, Up Ols Man, and back down Geronimo. Good workout.

13 years since I hiked the Mormon Trail, seems like I never did it because I can barely remember it. Started about 5:45am in the dark. First 2 hikers I saw were coming downhill with no lamps in total darkness :-s . Saw a few more heading downhill, must have got an early start to finish early.

Got up to the National Trail and took a left into Hidden Valley, bypassed Fat Man's Pass. Some of the slick and polished granite in Hidden Valley made for a bit more hazardous conditions with the damp sand everywhere.

halfway into Hidden Valley I took the rough route up to the Guadalupe Ridge and hiked that over to its junction with the National Trail. I hadn't hiked on Guadalupe Ridge in about 10 years, so I forgot how much bouldering is on this trail/route. It ended up taking more time that I had intended but at least that was out of the way early. The cooler morning weather and dampness also helped.

Took the National over to Corona de Loma and headed down. Along the flat portion of Corona de Loma I was passed by a trail runner with no shirt, no water, and smoking a cigarette :o . One of the odder things I've seen hiking.

headed up Corona de Loma east and quickly got off trail, heading up the canyon when the trail cuts to the south a bit and out of the canyon. There is a faint trail in the canyon, but it was getting fainter the further up I went, so when I caught my mistake I just doubled back. The ascent back up was slow as the sun was heating things up a bit by now. No hikers or bikers along this trail at all.

got back on the National and headed back. Walked back all the way through Hidden Valley, then made a left and got on the Mormon Trail further down. From Hidden valley to the trailhead it was steady traffic, pretty much all hikers.

the lot was full when I got back and the late arrivals were circling like vultures for open spots. Best views were of the mountains to the north newly covered in snow from the storms the night before. Nice workout hike on trails I haven't done in a long time, got nearly 3K' AEG

met up with todd and linda at warpaint
we got going around 0800
instead of doing the regular corona loop, linda had a route that went up the drainage between old man and corona de loma
some wash walking, some scrambling up the rocks, nothing too crazy or brushy
we continued in the wash toward gila valley lookout
returned on national and corona de loma trails
enjoyed the spin on corona loop and doing something different
it's been awhile since i've hiked with todd, so nice to get out with these two
fun morning!

As instructed by our hike organizer, Kelly and I were at the Warpaint trailhead by 0745. However, he did not realize that typing “Warpaint 7:45” (I have proof) actually meant going to THAT Warpaint, and maybe Corona wasn’t even the trail he thought it was. Hike organizer responsibilties were quickly reassigned to someone else.

Once we all met up at the same place, we headed across the flats over to the drainage I had suggested for our ascent. I’ve hiked up this drainage a few times, and always thought it was fun. Apparently, another local thinks so too, because all brush was nicely cut back the entire way up. Most of the way is a fun scramble, needing hands in a few places. Would not be fun if raining, the rocks are smooth. Even after reaching Corona, we stayed in the wash all the way to the trail for Gila Valley Lookout. Crossing through the Chinese Wall has some nice geology.

Steep, but short, climb on the trail up to the lookout. Caught our breath for a few moments, then took the lookout trail over to National. National east to the top of Corona, then down Corona. Got to see the new lazy switchbacks on Corona, the parks dept has been busy pushing rocks around!

Fun morning, although quite warm for February. Good to hike with Chumley & Kelly again.

HAZ tells me that I have hiked only 28 of the 41 named trails in South Mountain Preserve. I know the names of maybe 5 of them. Apparently I don't know the names of any of the trailheads. Sorry.

This was my inaugural visit to the new(ish) Gila Valley Lookout trail. It's not a dirt lot full of broken glass up there anymore!

Linda took the lead on the route up a fun little canyon with some light scrambling. Yay!

We returned on Corona and got to see some aggressive new trail work. It was pleasant in the shade but there's not much of that. It was good to hit the trails with Gecko again and thanks to Linda for guiding.

Started from the Warpaint trailhead. Saw two javelina as I hiked towards the Old Man trail.
Hiked up Old Man, west on National down and up Geronimo, west to the Gila Valley Lookout, and down Corona de Loma.
A couple new sections of trail have been built on Corona making it easier for MTBs to negotiate. A lot of work for very little gain IMO.
Didn't see anyone until I was almost down Corona.
Nice and cool out. Somo got a little rain last night. Spotty though.
Good workout. :)

Squeezed in a hike with Daniela before I escape AZ again. Met at Warpaint at 0800 and headed up Corona East. So much hotter than I would like. I hated it. But up we went. No breeze. Too much sunlight.

West on National, then down Corona. Looked like some trailwork had been done on Corona sometime since I was last on it. Still atrociously hot, but at least we were going downhill. Only saw one other hiker all day, and a handful of bikes. Good to see Daniela again. Hopefully the weather will be more reasonable when I get back to AZ in four weeks.
