Was signed up for the 100. But due to an injury that prevented me from doing much on Labor Day weekend, I figured I'm probably in no condition to attempt that, so the primary goal was 50.

Started out early in Downtown Prescott, and basically followed 89 2.5 miles to the trail. Pleasant temps in the morning, nothing remarkable as I made my way up to Groom Creek trail 10 miles in. By then it was light out, and it was nice and cool for the climb up Spruce and down Smith Ravine.

On Homestead, it started warming up, and I realized I had basically no energy. I'll chalk that up to a quick turnaround from flying back across the country on Thursday evening... Didn't want to be struggling just 20 miles in, but you can't have it all. At least the breeze tempered the sun a little.

Ranch trail was where the misery really started. I expected the climb, having been on that trail a couple times, but I absolutely hated Badger Mountain Trail. Long, windy, exposed, with the type of switchbacks that were probably designed to ensure mountain bikers don't have to put in any effort at all. 11 miles to do what's probably a 3-4 mile drive... Hopefully I never have to see Badger Mountain Trail ever again.

Things improved a little on Sundog Trail, which I actually liked better than BM. Then Peavine, which is just...flat. By the time I got to the dells, it was 5pm, and I figured the sun would be down before I got to 50. The north side of Watson Lake was actually a lot of fun, and I liked trying to move through there as fast as possible. Probably the only part of the day that was legitimately enjoyable.

One of my friends was waiting for me at the Watson Boat Ramp with a beer, which was a nice surprise.

By the time I got to Willow, it was getting dark, and I had to use a light most of the way through there. There were also thunderstorms moving in, which was fun (they didn't get to Willow, but I heard it got a little crazy closer to Granite Mountain). I really don't recommend going through the dells in the dark, it definitely upped the difficulty a level or two.

After that section, I decided to make it official and not go for what would've probably been a last place finish. I'm starting to come around to one of my friends' views that 50 miles is a superior distance to 100.

I set out with Musicdebbi on the Peavine Trail in Prescott, based on Mare Czinar's write up in the Arizona Republic that morning. Musicdebbi had been pining for some fall color, and the writeup suggested we might find some here. She doesn’t have my enthusiasm for hills, so this seemed just right. We fairly quickly diverged from Czinar’s hike plan, as we left the boring Peavine for the more interesting Lakeshore Trail/Watson Lake Loop and hunted up some geocaches. The lake was pretty; there was a little color along the shore. We spotted many American Coots and Red-winged Blackbirds, an American White Pelican, a few Double-crested Cormorants spreading their wings, and a Spotted Towhee.

Prescotstyle proposed biking Peavine Trail to Iron King Trail. Since it is only three easy miles to the Entro siding, I got to Sundog Ranch Trailhead early to get in some extra miles. 🚴🏻‍♂️

First I rode up the west side of Watson Lake to the boat ramp. Then I doubled back, heading down Sundog Trail to the industrial park. Not feeling like going all the way back to Sundog Ranch Trailhead just to come back to where I was, but a few feet over, I heaved my bike over a gate, then rode down into the Watson Woods Riparian Preserve.

After an hour on my own, I finally met up with Paul at the south end of Watson Lake.

There were TONS of people walking & biking on Peavine Trail and Iron King Trail. A couple of the more serious bikers got a kick out of Paul riding a unicycle. But there were way too many fat, lazy, cheating 🎃s on “e-bikes”. 👋

Flowers in the Watson Lake, Peavine Trail and Iron King Trail area were going bonkers with all the rain Prescott has been receiving. (The next 10 days are predicted to rain as well.)

Our humid ride complete, Paul and I retreated to his place for lunch & liquid replenishment. Is there a more refreshing post-hike beer than an ice-cold Pabst?

Decided to drive up North on a whim for the afternoon to visit Watson Lake. I’d only been once before and hiked on Peavine, so I was excited to do the loop! I totally meandered and took everything in as I was in no rush.

I actually missed the traditional parking lot turn and was about to turn around when I saw a secondary parking area called Lake overlook (and it was free!), so I parked there and headed to the right to start the loop.

Just FYI There was a ton of things in the air that would make anyone with severe allergies miserable without proper meds! Once I got off the Peavine trail onto the loop trail it definitely got more interesting. For a hike with not a ton of elevation gain, you’ll still get a great workout. Climbing up, down and all around the rocks is a bit tiring! It was also pretty hot and humid.

Highlights for me were the treehouse, the cool geology & seclusion of the middle of the loop and also the waterfall dam. I did also see someone’s shelter tucked away and I didn’t get too close since I was solo, lol. I only saw one other woman hiking solo on the loop portion, but did see a solid amount of people once closer to the TH.

The water levels were pretty low; looked less than half full and the shallow areas were covered in algae. The sunset was a total stunner which was an awesome bonus! Really glad I got outside and always love exploring new places!

This being my first time hiking the Granite Dells, I cannot attest to the remainder of the park, but at least along Peavine Trail, and in the Storm Trails, each trail intersection is marked by a map of the full Storm Trails system, with relevant terrain features, and a black dot indicating current location. In addition, all the Storm Trails' actual paths are marked by a spray-painted white dot every 100 ft. or so.

After picking up an excellent trail map at the trail register, we headed down the Peavine Trail. Such as “down” is. (Peavine only descends 200 ft. in 5.5 miles to AZ-89A.)

There were lots of birds — primarily geese, with some ducks and a single Great Blue Heron — on the shallow, muddy, southern shore of Watson Lake. They were too far away to shoot with my dinky pocket camera: I would have need a tripod and zoom lens. If you hear shots, it isn’t duck hunters, it is cops on the adjacent outdoor range. Mind the “CAUTION: Hazardous conditions exist. Please stay on trail.” signs. 😉

Captains Trail is only 0.72 miles, with 143 ft. of elevation gain. There’s a little bit of shade after a ⅓ of a mile, and some decent Watson Lake photo ops at the ½ mile mark. But there is better to come! Just before the end of Captains Trail, and the start of Easter Island Trail, there is a use trail off to the left. A few yards over is a rest bench and great views of Watson Lake, the Granite Dells and, in the distance, Granite Mountain. 📸

Easter Island Trail has even less shade than Captains Trail. After 250 yds. on Easter Island Trail, or maybe a ¼ mile from Peavine Trail, the vertical boulder which gives Easter Island Trail its name — it resembles the moai on Rapa Nui — came into view on our left. The trail wraps around the boulder, so Prescottstyle & I took photos from multiple angles & distances. It was warming up quick enough that Prescottstyle & I decided to forgo hiking out to the Flintstones-themed trails at the far end of the Storm Trails system. Instead, we turned up Big Rock Canyon Trail. 😅

Big Rock Canyon Trail starts just after the Easter Island boulder. It is only 0.28 miles long. Not exact the Appalachian Trail. While eyeing some shade, I got rattled. I looked high & low for the culprit, but could not spot him in the darkened rocks, branches and leaf litter. Prescottstyle & I kept moving. 🐍

Boulder Creek Trail is 0.53 miles. Since we just took it back to Peavine Trail, I’m clueless how much AEG it might have. Certainly not Matterhorn, or even Glassford Hill, levels of gain. Boulder Creek did have some water, but the flow was so light it was inaudible.

We took Lakeshore Trail and Peavine Trail back to the trailhead. Thick clouds were rolling in. We made it to the covered picnic tables just as it began raining. 🌧

First time to Watson Lake. I was expecting a simple walk around the shoreline with some rocks to play on, but the dells along the north shore were mysterious and we spent some time exploring. We found a makeshift shelter that had a definite creepy vibe. Lots of blood sucking mosquitoes fed on our group, especially while exploring along the stagnant north shore coves.

First hike of my daily double. Started from the Peavine TH (south end) around 6:30. TH has parking for close to 40 vehicles, a decent trail map of the Watson Lake trails and a nice map of the Prescott Trail system. There are bathrooms at this TH and a drinking fountain.

There are a couple of ways that I grade a trail. How pretty is the terrain that the trail is going through and how well does it interact with that terrain. The Peavine scored points on the later (at least for the first few miles) but no points on former. The trial is flat, straight and smooth. Very boring in that regard. However, because of that, it does make an ideal jogging trail that allows you to get some easy miles and still enjoy the scenery. For the first .5 miles there are some commercial businesses on the south side. But they quickly fade away and your left with small grassy fields enclosed by granite hills that become more pronounced as you continue. The north side presents some nice, but limited views of Watson Lake and the granite dells that buffer it. There are several nice Kodak moments. The jog was uneventful as I went from the south end to the northern end of the Peavine Trail. Very nice up to the Iron King Trail, but it becomes more lackluster as I continued north. There are quite a few connector trails that feed into the Peavine Trail, most of them occurring in the first few miles. I did notice one that was closer to the northern end, though it seemed to be more of a subdivision trail. Also, there appeared to be a trail (more like a road) that continued north from the northern parking lot. I followed it through the culvert (one of the bigger culverts I've been through) but didn't see a trail name and wasn't overly inspired by what I saw. Also, looking at trail maps (and some minimal exploring on my part) showed that there were trails heading west and then north from the southern TH. Trails were not signed, but the map makes me think they may be considered part of the Peavine Trail. :? The Riparian area located at the southern TH was closed. Unsure the status of this area.

The northern TH has parking for 15+ vehicles. However, there were no facilities at this end. Both TH are pay TH. Currently the cost is $3 for all day parking.

Nice easy run, with some nice sights. Will have to come back to hit some of the single track trails. Trails were busy, but not as busy as I would have expected. Encountered 18 hikers, 15 bikers and 11 trail runners. Wildlife was minimal....a squirrel and a rabbit.

Addendum: Came back to this trail on 10/6 and picked up from the parking lot on the north side. (This is where I had turned around on my 9/8 visit). Followed the trail as it went under the culvert and then headed north. From the parking lot the trail goes for about .8 miles before coming to an old railway bridge that has been fenced off. There is a bench positioned here overlooking low lying grasslands. The trail out to this point had been on a raised berm - the only remains of where the tracks use to run, so there is a somewhat elevated of the surrounding land. There is a sign on the fence that says trail temporarily closed. So who is to say what may come about down the road... or track as it were :) . Did this hike near the end of the day with my wife. Weather was awesome. Great times.

We came in the main pay gate (free on Wednesdays) and drove straight ahead past the second restroom building. There was a parking lot on the left and we could see the trailhead sign before we made the left into the lot. Judy and I did this hike clockwise. Hiking it clockwise gives you the 'dells' right from the get go. There was about a mile and a half of boulder/rock trail. Good flow of water being released out the back of the dam...good to hear the roar as we approached. After that we could see a dirt road ahead with bikers and runners and determined this was the Peavine Trail. At this point the flat dirt road looked good to us so we bypassed a about 1.5 miles of trail closer to the lake. The last few miles is not very exciting with a well maintained smooth trail and not a lot of views of the lake. For me this hike would be better if you hiked clockwise for about 2.5 miles and turned around.

Last summer I spent several hours tracing up the constellation trails. Driving by the area intrigued me so I looked it up online. Prescott is dialed in on being a trail friendly community and it shows in all the details.

On a whim I remembered and mentioned it to Bruce. He made it sing adding in Willow and Watson lakes. Prescott hadn't been an area that intrigued me much other than Granite & Groom. It's been growing on me a little over the years.

Yesterday I pulled a leg muscle. This seemed easy enough that I could hobble it out with a trekking pole.

The Constellation Trails are well marked with "you are here" maps at major junctions. The area was popular on this chilly April morning and on our return with more families. If you're an avid hiker with family/friends that get bored/whiny after a mile or two they might enjoy a little loop through this disneyland of granite.

Bruce sold the Willow leg as the boring part of the hike. We all enjoyed it more than expected. Temps and a little jaunt through huge cottonwoods on the peninsula did the trick.

Like all of the loop I'd never been to the famed Watson Lake. Seems like everyone gets a great photo here and now I know why. Aravaipa Running had an event going on. Ray and I held back a tad as Bruce hiked by the onlookers and through the finish line backwards. They cheered finishers coming in and didn't yell at him so we proceeded. A minute or two later I was standing at the postcard shot of the lake. Not a cloud in the sky when we started but they raced in just as we arrived. After marveling the scene I noticed the perfect snow capped San Francisco Peaks back yonder. Wow... forwards, backwards and upside-down Mom!

We lunched overlooking Granite Creek just before the dam. Squads were out enjoying the weekend lake vibes. After lunch Bruce escorted us over to the dam. Water shoots out from high above. It would be really nice on a hot day. Continuing on is a cottonwood paradise high above the creek. This would be another great area to take non hiking friends for an hour of piddling around as parking is near.

To make the loop work we needed to cross private property. Got lucky as a man was taking out trash to the garbage. Ray asked the REI shirted gentleman and our dream loop came true.

This hike put Prescott on the map for me.

The more I hike around Prescott, the more I like it. Joe tossed out a starting point (the Constellation trails) for this hike and Bruce filled out the rest. The result is a gem. A beautiful granite landscape dominates a big chunk of the hike while giant cottonwoods add variety and splendor along the way. The weather, while a bit windy at times, was perfect otherwise. We did have to improvise to connect the dots, but it worked out well. Lots of large swarming gnats chased us around the east side of Willow Lake on the return, but that was a minor inconvenience for a few minutes on an otherwise great hike.

Bruce and Joe, thanks for inviting me along. As always, I had a tremendous time!
