I always enjoy the pleasure of introducing someone to a new hike, especially when it's my son who was visiting us for the week. Picacho peak is one of those must do hikes. today was a beautiful day and we had a great time together. Thank you Peter!

Enjoyed a nice hike up the canyon after climbing to Thomas Point, especially after about a mile in when the crowds dispersed. :app:

A beautiful day in the 70's, clear blue sky makes for a really nice hike. I like this up and back. nice views of Oak Creek Canyon, the West Fork and the San Francisco Peaks. it was a great prelude to hiking in the WEst fork.

Close to three years ago I hiked from the Canyon Lake TH through the slot canyon and March Valley to Black Top Mesa. It was a long and amazing hike... one of my favorites. (My triplog was on April 15, 2012) One of the challenges of that day was that our route took much longer than we expected and as a result we ran short on time and didn't get to stay up on Black Top Mesa very long. This became one of those vistas I really wanted to see again. So, with the shorter route from First Water Trail head returning to BTM was more doable as a day hike.

Today was the day I was able to come back to Black Top. I love the views from this mesa. Weavers Needle, Geronimo, Battleship Mtn, Superstition Peak, etc.. it's a great spot! I'm glad I did it again. It's a little over 12 miles if you do it with the Black Mesa Loop, that includes a challenging climb to the top of BTM. Yes, it's a great place to eat lunch with Weaver's Needle majestically standing in front of you!

I highly recommend this hike and when you do, take the First Water Trail towards Canyon Lake. This is the Black Mesa loop in a clockwise direction. It is a bit easier at the end of the hike to walk in this direction.

Nice morning for a hike. Our first experience in the White Tank Mountains. My friend and I started out thinking this would be an out and back. We began at parking area 9 because it was closest to the mountain and the quickest connection to the Ford Canyon Trail. It didn't take us long to get into the canyon. Once there we enjoyed bouldering up the ravine. We made good time so we began to talk about doing the loop. I am sure glad we did. Though the views on Ford Canyon were nice and they improved as we gained elevation but by far the best views came as we headed East on the Willow Canyon and Mesquite Trails. I highly recommend doing the loop, it just isn't that much further than the out and back.

This was a long awaited hike, since first reading about it more than a 3 years ago. I made an attempt on this about 3 years ago late in the afternoon but ran out of time as sunset was approaching and needed to get back for dinner. I was eager to do it again.

So, it was a nice April day, overcast and cool, good to be on the train again. The high was expected to be 85 degrees. It was my fourth time on the Boulder Canyon Trail. I really enjoy this view of the Superstitions. We had the whole day ahead of us. :GB:

The familiar views of Canyon Lake, the Boulder Canyon, Weavers Needle, and Battleship were like a warm welcome to this returning hiker. We initially expected this would be an out and back, but then after enjoying the terrain and the peaceful surroundings we decided to make it a loop.

It was an moderate to easy climb up to the ridge. We choose to turn left off the Boulder Canyon trail just above the ravine. (a little further than suggested on the route) The view is best as you stay to the right and traverse up on the ridge. It's a cool drop off. I love being up high and looking down. Once on top, we got a clear view of Tortilla Flats. Four orange school buses caught my eye as they passed through the town far below.

I enjoyed the off trail portion. It was fairly easy to maneuver around the small brushes and scramble up the rocks. I always get a little nervous about finding snakes but there was not a single sighting. I like seeing snakes as long as I don't get too close t0o quick! :scared:

This was one of those times when my friend and I thought, "I wonder what it would be like to make this loop." The rim of the large bowl to the north of us looked inviting. As I studied the topo I found a couple of routes back to the trail. From the high point, we continued north along the ridge and began to find our way around the rim, slowly traversing down toward the west. This route naturally led us down to a dry creek bed where water obviously flows during heavy rains. We stayed up above the creek bed as long as we could, to avoid the larger plants and bushes. Eventually, the Boulder Canyon trail became visible when we came to a drop off. There were larger boulders and a steeper climb down but it was not too difficult to make our way down to the trail.

It was a nice hike, very secluded & quiet. :--: I'd do it again. :)

Great Day for a challenging hike! (It's a strenuous climb really!) Introduced friends from Switzerland to a duzy of a hike... (This is one of my favorites! :y: ) They kept saying, "This is amazing. I have never done anything like this." The culmination of the experience came after we were done, sitting at the Goldfield Ghosttown, drinking a refreshing large cup of lemonade while we looked up at where we had been. With a big grin on my face, I held up my fist to bump their's and said, "We did it!" : app : We agreed in August they would return the favor... in their country!!! I can't wait!

Just had a couple of hours in the latter part of an afternoon... a quick up and back...went part way with a group. Saw the beginning of the sunset. There's more to see here... I need to come back to do this again. I want to get to the top! ;)

Great day for this hike. Clear and warm. I wore short sleeves the whole trip. Started at 8am returned at 1pm. Stopped twice for about 30 min. Very light traffic on the trail.

Beautiful views from this mountain! Slightly hazy but the Grand Canyon was still visible. Several beautiful large Monarch butterflys enjoyed the flowers at the summit. Peaceful. Had it almost to myself. :) Very little sign of those pesty bugs in the triplogs a few days ago. No snow visible except in small patches on the back side Agassiz & Fremont.

One section of the trail on ridge (not far up from the saddle) has been torn up terribly by hikers I presume. Too many people cutting the trail. Now it's so bad it's difficult to know where the "real" trail is. Sad to see.

Still it was a fun day. I finished quicker than I expected. I really like this hike. Feels a bit like you are on top of the world... well, I guess that's coming. This was a prep hike I had chosen for Mt Shasta, California which I hope to summit a week from today! :y:

Turned these two hikes into a loop. Started at 136th St Spur. Went up the gully to the peak. I enjoyed the little bit of bouldering in the dry creek bed also the nice steep narrow trail up to the Sunrise trail on the ridge. Then back across to the peak. Easy hike down to 145th street and then walked about a mile on a trail next to the road back to the trailhead. Better views this week, not quite as smokey.

This was a biggie for me, so I want to write about it! Grab a cup of coffee and join me for a trek. ;)

I read about this route in a trail book. It's not a route I could find in HAZ, though I am sure many have done it. Several things about this route appealed to me. I had read with much intrigue on HAZ about the La Barge Box canyon and Battleship Mountain, the Marsh Valley Loop and Black Top Mesa. This challenging 16 mile route seemed to have it all.

This has gotta be one of the most scenic trails in the Superstitions. I tell you I was NOT disappointed. :y: It was a perfect day. Temps were lower (in the high 70's) cause a storm had just passed through. The ground was damp and there were still puddles of water on some of the rocks. The early morning clouds passed further east opening up deep clear blue skies.

My partner and I left the Canyon Lake TH at about 7am. It was an easy familiar jaunt up to the ridge above La Barge canyon. Breathe taking views of where we were about to tread. I couldn't wait to see the box canyon. :GB: The route to the most amazing part of the canyon, the sharp "S" curve, was not difficult. We found a spot to sit on top of the large boulders that seem to block passage through the canyon and ate our lunch.

We knew ahead of us there would be a lot of bouldering and bushwhacking, an adventure yet to be experienced. I enjoy this stuff, the sheer challenge of passing through and finding your own way to the other side. It was the second, more gradual "S" curve what proved to be most difficult. With no trail or cairns to guide us, by trial and error, we maneuvered our way through the maze of trees, brush, water and tall boulders. Sometimes things seemed to be more difficult before they got better. :wlift:

As the bounders became smaller and the brush cleared more we pressed on, toward the south, mostly in the creek bed. I was ready for the sight of a trail when it finally appeared out of nowhere. A couple of large cairns in the middle and edge of the creek gave it way.
We were looking for the Calvary trail but without realizing we were on it, we passed through the Marsh Valley. Suddenly, we came to a fork in the trail enlightening us to our oversight.

I was glad to discover we were farther than we thought. The trudging and bouldering in the canyon significantly delayed us but we were on track. This was the Dutchmans trail which led us soon to the Bull Pass trail on the southern leg of our loop.

Though our time was passing quickly, we still chose to explore the Black Top Mesa, but in a very round about way.... We were almost to Bull Pass, when a faint but distinct horse trail on left led us back along the north side of the mountain. We kept wondering, "when are we going up?" Perhaps a 3/4 of a mile into this detour, we came to another saddle and realized this trail was not leading us to the top. So we made the scramble through the tall green grass, prickly pear and black lava rock. The 360 degree views from the top of Weavers Needle, Malpais, Geronimo and Battle ship were spectacular!

We now realized if we keep up a good pace, we weren't getting back to the TH until sunset, I estimated 7pm. So, back to the pass down the route we should have taken. I had to chuckle about our detour, "Why didn't we just go all the way to the pass? It was so clear!"

With about 8 miles ahead of us, we had the additional motivation to move quickly. As we headed down from Bull Pass, I almost stepped on a large black and orange stripped lizard. Seeing this one was a first for me. I fortunately managed to avoid any contact, but it was a beautiful sight. He slowly walked away from me into the nearby brush. I later realized I had seen a Gila Monster. (Sure glad I didn't touch it!) :o

The trip back on the Boulder Canyon trail from there was pretty uneventful. We were so tired and in a hurry, it became a bit aggravating. I can't count the times the trail crisscrossed the creek bed. There were several times we had to stop, ("where's the trail?") and look for the cairns making our way north.

Finally the trail headed up out of Boulder Canyon. We hardly stopped at the old paint mine. We were late our wives were sure to be worried... so we pressed on. As the sun was setting we enjoyed the steep angles of the sun against the rugged cliffs. It was cool to look back, recognizing Black Top Mesa and realizing we were there, just a few hours earlier. 8)

Almost exactly 12 hours later we threw our packs in the car, grabbed a cool Gatorade and headed home. "That was an adventure!" :M2C:

Really liked this hike. Good distance and elevation gain. Great views from a variety of vantage points, but expecially on top of the Lookout. I have wanted to stand at this point for some time... Well worth it. :y: I realized the peak I had been seeing (behind Thompson and McDowell) from the Mesa/Tempe area was actually not the Lookout, but the East End peak which is the hightest peak in the McDowells. :-k Though the temperature was perfect with a light breeze, the haze in the air made it difficult to get good shots of distant mountains or views of the city...

We came up the Tom's Thumb trail. Then returned on East End and Windgate Pass trail. As we carefully selected our footing on the way down, I was surprised at the steepness of the East End trail. Lots of loose gravel under your feet. 8-[ But once down trail level out and we enter the large expance below, I was also impressed with the sheer breath of the valley between the Lookout and McDowell peak. What a great view! :D

Glad I did this challenging and scenic hike. I'd like to try this again on a clearer day.

Beautiful day for a hike, at least it appeared that way from the number of people on this trip! There must have been three groups with 10-20 people, including a big group of boyscouts. We had to wait in line at times to do the various cable climbs. Once on top we chose to do the west side of the peak first (with a nice lunch break), so that we could wait for some of the crowds to get off the top of the mountain. It looked like they were having a convention up there! :gun: Wall to wall people.

Still my son and I enjoyed the clear skies, light breeze and not so warm weather. We chose to park at the Anza Loop picnic area. The Hunter Trail parking was packed! This gave us a easy head start before starting the climb.

I enjoy this climb. The cables give you a sense of security and make it feel so much easier. We were up to the top (West side of peak) in less than a couple of hours. Then, as the last group headed down, we made our way across and up to the top. We chose to go down the back (south)side. There's a great set of cables here that guided us down a really steep portion of the route back. This put us on the Sunset Trail, so we then looped around the mountain and took the road back to the Anza Loop parking lot.

This hike seems short to me, so I chose the back loop for the additional mileage. As you might expect the Sunset Trail pretty quiet. It was nice. The desert is just beginning to bloom. In total I guessed it was about a 7 mile loop. I wish they had a trail either over the ridge or across the north side of the mountain. It'd be a great addition to the park for hikers. :-k

Nice to finally get a hike on the Estrella ridge. This was a good workout. Saw about 15-20 people on the trail. Two large groups were just ahead of us. We passed them on the way. The views on top were great. We would clearly see South Mountain and Phoenix. I also saw the Cardinal Stadium.

The road in from the south has some tough spots. A high clearance vehicle is necessary. My Highlander made it but there were two points where deep holes made us spin the tires. We almost got stuck but I was able to back up and try another approach. (Actually I enjoyed the challenge. :D I just prayed I wouldn't break anything!)

On the way home as we traveled from Maricopa to back up to the 10. I struggled to identify which peak was "Quartz Peak." It wasn't until I later looked up some of the photo sets on this site that I realized I was looking at the wrong peak! :o At least now I can look at the Estrella ridge and finally say, "I've been there too!" :y: That's why we hike, isn't it?

Like others have said... I enjoyed this hike but don't think I would do it again. This is a "been there done that" hike. It just doesn't have come back :worthy: appeal like others.

My son and I did this hike as a combination of three trails. Our route began at the San Gabriel street trailhead. (I like to park here because it's easier to find parking and there are less people) We followed the "Triple Ridge Loop" route to Fat Man's pass. Then we continued West on the National trail, turning south at the point that leads back up to the high point on the Guadalupe Ridge Trail. This point provides a great 360 degree view of the Phoenix area. A great place to take a break. We finished up by heading back down a roller coaster ride back down the Guadalupe Ridge (with some fun bouldering) finishing at the San Gabriel trailhead.
