I did this hike clockwise, starting north on Bluff Spring, over to Red Tank, Whiskey Spring and finishing on Dutchman. There was LOTS of water flowing everywhere and plenty of creek crossings. I managed to find a way to boulder hop across all of them without getting my feet too wet. I went off trail once where Bluff Spring came to the first big creek crossing. I inadvertently followed cairns that led west across the stream, instead of heading north. Took me up a pretty mountain but realized my goof and headed back. Gorgeous day, lots of folks out and about.

Last of my 4 passage hike. Started the morning fresh after finding a campsite at mile 103.8 the night before. Only had 9.3 miles to go. Was a pleasant change in trail from the day before. Nice, pretty rolling desert. Finished in 3.5 hours, after stopping at the Sahuarita trail head for a water stock up. Came back to that trail head after getting my truck to leave some snacks and water as well.

This was the 3rd passage on my 4 day trip. Took the detour to The Lake and loaded up on silty water. I had intended to camp there, but it was just too early in the day, so I kept on steppin. I ended up doing 20 miles, searching for a suitable campsite that wasn't exposed to wind and sun. My feet were getting a little angry with all the up and down on the loose rocks. I finally found a site in a wash at around mile 103.8 of the next passage.....

Day 2 of a 4 day journey through passages 4 - 7. Mostly uneventful trek until I made my way down to Bowman Spring. I intended to set up camp at there, which had plenty of water. But after seeing the bones strung up on a rope and hanging from a tree, plus all the bear scat, headed straight back to the trail and kept going. I found a wonderful oak tree in a pasture and camped for the night. The next morning I got to meet trail angel Cooper, who had just left chairs, water, snacks and a garbage bag at FR 62. Made my day! Kentucky camp was INCREDIBLE!!!

Arrived in Patagonia Weds morning, and left my vehicle parked in front of the Marshall's Office, as he instructed (talk about peace of mind!). All restaurants were closed so went to the market for a breakfast sandwich, and then began the road walk. I made my way to the Temporal Gulch trailhead, which was littered with empty soda cans and boxes, and probably 10 water jugs. I wished I could carry that all out....ugh. Water was plentiful on this first day, from the windmill spigot at mile 59, to Anaconda Spring, Walker Basin and my campsite for the night, Bear Spring. Lots of water in the creek below Bear Spring, so didn't have to rely on the algae filled water and figure out the broken pipe. Others had commented that you can fish the parts of out the bottom of the tub, but I couldn't find them all. The next morning I hit the trail and appreciated all the interpretive signs along the way describing the mining operations. Ran into two groups of equestrians on this stretch.

Last day of my 4 day trek through passages 8, 9 and 10. Got a super early start from my campsite at mile 153.5, and walked a couple of hours in the dark. Had a real good scare from some deer staring me down. I was yelling at the top of my lungs, worried it was a bear or mountain lion!! There was absolutely no water anywhere on this passage, so had to really limit my eating so I didn't get too thirsty as I was still carrying water from Italian Spring the day before. It got me through to the end. The climb to the saddle overlooking Catalina Highway was tough, and seeing the mountain bike tire tracks was hair raising, imagining riding up or down that rugged, rocky terrain. When I saw the highway, I was so relieved. But then the final 1.5 miles of climbing back to my truck at Gordon Hirabayashi campground seemed like forever. But got it done. Left 3 gallons of water at that trailhead.

Day 2 of my four day trek through passages 8, 9 and 10. Got an early start from my campsite at Rincon Creek, and really enjoyed the hiking until beginning the ascent. Hope Camp was really cool. Love the stone steps up the south side of the mountains. Stopped at Grass Shack for a much needed break and some water. There was some in the creek about 100 yards or so past campsite 3. It was a bit gross with tadpoles, but filtered fairly well and was cold!! That got me through to Manning Camp, where I stayed for the night. Plenty of water in the spring there at the bottom of the hill behind campsite 1, but it has an oily layer on it. Hopefully it filtered out... The restroom had two buckets with pump water, soap and hand sanitizer!!! What a welcome site! The next morning had the final climb to the top of Mica Mountain, and then the descent from hell. There was lots of cool water in Italian Spring, and I knew it was my last water source until the end of passage 10, so carried a bunch down that mountain. That was tough on my old knees and very slow going for me. When I finally got to Redington road and looked back, it was amazing to see how far up and down I had actually gone. Went a few miles into passage 10 to find a wash to camp for the night.

This was the first of a four day trip of passages 8, 9 and 10. Got a late start as I only had to get to the border of Saguaro National Park. Loaded up on water at La Selvilla picnic area in Colossal Cave Mountain park, and made my way to my camp site in Rincon Creek, to begin the tough climb up Mica Mountain the next morning.

Days 3.5 of a 3 section hike. Made it to Grandview Lookout Tower in good time. Thankfully again, the same wonderful trail angel placed some public water at the trailhead. This was the first time in my section hiking the AZT that I had to use public water, so was very grateful for it. Otherwise would have had to end early. My destination on this 3rd day was to hike 20 miles to get to Tusayan for some good food and a shower. The last couple of miles just east of town seemed soooooo long. After a massive plate of mexican food, holed up at the Grand Canyon Lodge for the night. Hit the trail again early the next morning to finish it out to the South Kaibab Trailhead. Walked the rim trail back to the visitor center, and enjoyed the beautiful views.

Day 2 of a 3 section NOBO hike which started at Cedar Ranch trailhead. Finished the last part of Section 35, and thankfully a trail angel had left 5 public gallons just north of Moqui trailhead. I used about a half gallon, as thankfully that was the only water available up until that point. Ran into quite a few SOBO through hikers along the way. The signage in this section was excellent, and the tree cover was much appreciated after the prior day of full exposure (thankfully I always carry my trusty trekking umbrella). Saw some wild horses, cows and deer. The metal Russell tanks were dry, but the Russell wildlife tank was full, and there were 5 public gallons placed at the restrooms at Russell Tank trailhead as well. After about 18 miles of hiking, set up camp on a bed of pine needles. Next day, on to Grandview lookout tower.

The start of a 3 section NOBO trip began with sleeping in the bed of my truck at the Cedar Ranch trailhead the night before.
There was so much traffic on FR 417, I had to drive back east of the road a bit to park. Began the hike at 5:30 a.m., and 6 vehicles passed me on Cedar Ranch road before I even got to Tub Ranch. Thankfully I brought a mask to block some dust. There were 3 SOBO PCT refugees camped next to the road near Tub Ranch, and plenty of water in the large metal trough. Hiked about 17 miles in, spent the night, and carried on. It was dry and hot, and the single track prior to Lockwood tank felt like walking through the Sahara desert at times! Tub Ranch was the last water to be seen until Moqui Stage Station.

This was probably my favorite section so far, at least the first half! Got my start at 0700, and passed all the forest clean up along the way. HUGE piles of debris - lots of hard work going on there. Made the slow ascent to Alfa Fia tank right as the rain hit. Pulled out the rain gear and filled up my water bottles. The tank was a bit silty when filling my filter bag, but beautiful. Slogged my way in the rain to the turnoff to Bismarck Lake. Right off the trail was a beautiful boma under a large tree, so set up camp there as the rain stopped. Next morning hit the trail again at 0700 and made my way through the beautiful aspen forest. It gradually gave way to more exposed and dry sections. Just past Kelly tank were lots of chill cows laying on the trail, just barely glancing my way. The clouds rolled in as I began the long road walk. I was trying to outrun the rain as I made my way to the end of the passage and my dad waiting to pick me up. He had driven through heavy rain and hail to get me, but thankfully it had not hit me! Beautiful passage for sure, and got it done in 2 days.

Did this in two separate trips. I completed from highway 77 to the trailhead for section 14 a couple of trips back, and then finished the rest this weekend, combined with section 12. This was an easy trek, very well maintained. Didn't look for water, however stopped at the windmill at Kannally Wash to check the situation. There was a black plastic tank inside the metal tank, but no water at all. Really enjoyed all the signage throughout the state park.

Drove up after work on Friday night and hit the trail. Made it to Dan's Saddle and set up camp for the night on a nice, sandy flat spot. Got started at 5:15 Saturday morning and finished both this section and 13 by 1:30. Saw lots of flowers, 2 bunnies (including one that was VERY friendly - see pics), and lots of lizards, butterflies and grasshoppers. Although not listed in the water sources, there was a big blue tank and trough at mile 194.5 that was full and running. Didn't check any other water sources, as I carried mine the whole way. This section was meticulously maintained. I really enjoyed this hike, and had the pleasure of meeting the trail steward at the end of the passage. I thanked her! This was a nice contrast to section 11, as there was so much downfall and I kept losing the trail.

Camped at Gordon Hirabayashi Friday Night and hit the trail early Saturday morning. There were probably 20 - 30 water crossings on this trip (literally water flowing EVERYWHERE - a beautiful sight!!), and at first I tried to avoid wet feet by walking up and down the banks looking for a place to cross. ](*,) Got to the crossing near Hutch's Pool, where it was knee deep, and had to just suck it up and remove shoes. After that, just got the feet wet to save time. There was a LOT of deadfall all over the trail, and lost it a few times at water crossings, but followed the app to get me back on track. The snow started getting really thick at around mile 178, and although I had footsteps to follow, it was very slow going as the snow was a bit slickery. :scared: After Romero Pass, it was a very slow, careful trip for me, but thoroughly enjoyed it. Stopped at the Mt. Lemmon General Store, as well as the Sawmill Run for a burger, beer and fries!

Left my car and 3 gallons of water at the Freeman Rd. trailhead Saturday morning. My husband dropped me off at the junction of Tiger Mine Rd and the 77 and I walked the 1.5 miles to the trailhead. Mostly sunny day, actually got a little toasty at times. Ran into a group of day hikers and chatted a while, but no other people on the trail. The long, rocky descent into Camp Grant wash seemed to take forever, but finally made it and set up camp. Plenty of water at Cowhead well. The big tank was completely full and water pipe dripping. The two smaller troughs were both full as well but also full of bees and tadpoles. It rained off and on during the night, and then rained steadily through the remaining 11 or so miles. Had my trusty trekking umbrella and my rain jacket, so the upper half stayed dry and warm, but my feet and pants were pretty soggy by the time I made it to the car. Very sketchy drive west on Freeman Rd. It was very gloppy and no other cars had been on it yet. Very slow, scary 19 miles! I really loved this passage. Beautiful rolling desert, available water sources and perfect temperatures!!

Got a late start, so hit the trail at 8:30. Nice, rolling trails and no traffic except a few hunters on SUV's. The trail was nicely marked with posts and cairns. Came across several abandoned mines and a weird section where black and white PVC pipes stuck out of the ground about 6 inches, spaced a foot and a half or so apart. The newly created reroute of part of the trail had me a bit worried that I missed a turn, but it connected to the trail at a gate. The app and the maps don't quite match up yet. Otherwise, just a quiet trip.

Found water at the tank on the east side of Ripsey wash at mile 253, so loaded up, and found a campsite near the tall walls on that side. Good thing as a storm rolled in and the wind picked up with a steady sprinkle all night. The walls kept the wind down a bit. Packed up in the rain in the dark and hit the trail a little after 6 a.m. Finding my way in the wash in the dark was a challenge, but followed the reflective signs and made it to the Big Hill. A lot of recent horse traffic on the trail apparently right after it rained chewed this section up a bit. Finished the day in 5 hours, with my husband waiting with a beer and oreos. Doesn't get much better than that! Headed to Old Time Pizza in Kearny for some yum grub.

Dropped 3 gallons back at the Freeman Road trailhead and took home a couple of empties. Probably 7 full gallons and many partial jugs in there.

Finally able to get back on the trail and chip away at NOBO sections and get 16 done. I had previously done 17 as a there-and-back, due to lack of ride availability, but did it again with this one. Wasn't sure were to leave my Blubaru near the start as there was some construction at the intersection of Riverside and the hwy where they built a new bridge, so parked in the dirt next to the road, just west of the building there. Checked out the old bridge and started my journey. Visited the tribute to the Gila River section, and carried on. I ran into 2 thru hikers and one cyclist on the first day. Stopped at the Gila River right where the trail turns north at Rincon Road and loaded up with as much as my tummy could carry. My Sawyer squeeze was able to clear out the water just fine. I packed 6 liters, knowing water sources were tight on this section, but didn't want to miss an opportunity to camel up. Made 18 miles in 9.5 hours, so set up camp at the wash at mile 281.4. Heard another hiker go through as I was holed up in my tent that night and saw probably 5 more the next day. The AZT is becoming very popular! Hit the trail early the next morning for the long uphill climb and admired the beauty of the desert. There was a downed saguaro that blocked the trail but I failed to note exactly where. I'm guessing around mile 283 or 284. I finished out sections 16 and 17 in 9.5 hours. Since I've already posted a section 17 triplog, I won't again, but of note - I didn't realize they moved the water cache box from the start of section 17 to the intersection at FR4, but it was full of probably 20 gallons. Last log I read was 10/28 and it was empty then, so thank you to the angel who stocked it!

Did this loop as a quick day hike. Different maps put this mileage between 8.6 and 9.5. My GPS pegged it at about 9.5. Decided to do this counter-clockwise, however if I do it again, I'll do it clockwise and make the ascent up Bluff Spring trail first instead of the descent last. The Dutchman trail was wonderful and rolling. I should probably have brought my trekking poles as there were many loose rocks to navigate over but a nice, easy to follow trail. Reached the intersection with Bluff Spring Trail and made a left and made the long gnarly trek to the parking lot. Cairns marked any areas in a wash that weren't obvious or were a bit overgrown. With my legs a bit tired, the descent was taken very carefully, and it was a toasty 95 degrees when I got back to the car. But a very nice trip indeed!

Decided to do a quick backpack trip this weekend, and was looking for a loop close to home. This was an awesome choice! Although the parking lot was full, which initially had me picturing a superhighway on the trails, I picked a route that was moderately trafficked at first, and virtually no one near the middle. I was on the trail by 9 a.m., and headed up Bluff Springs 235 intending to take Terripin in a clockwise loop around Bluff Spring Mountain. Terripin was very loose and a steep decline, and I fell on my butt for the first time hiking. DOH. Was a bit more careful with my steps after that, and enjoyed the scenery. Once I got to the intersection of Dutchman Trail and made a right, there was no one around. Made my way north to Marsh Valley and then east towards Charlebois Canyon. I passed that, although it looked enticing, and headed to LaBarge Canyon for the night. No one camped there, although 4 hikers passed me while I was setting up. Another man named John set up camp there as well, and after setting up my camp, looked for Oak Spring (couldn't find it) and LaBarge Spring. Plenty of water there. Next morning packed up and finished the loop. Passed 3 boy scout troops and a bunch of other backpackers on their way back as well. Gorgeous 24 hour trip, and so close to home!
