Some of the flora on the descent:
UL There was quite a bit of this Clematis vitalba**, commonly known as **Old Man's Beard** or **Traveller’s Joy**.
LL Black Bryony (Dioscorea communis), also known locally as Nueza Negra. While toxic to humans, these berries are a late-season feast for certain birds and small rodents in the Somiedo Natural Park.
UR **Carex pendula** (Great Pendulous Sedge). These sedges can grow quite large, often forming dense, bright green "curtains" along the trail banks.
Middle - Common Ivy (Hedera helix). Symbolism of Growth: In the Cantabrian Mountains, ivy acts as a "vertical forest." It provides a vital micro-habitat for small birds and insects that wouldn't find shelter on smooth bark.
LR - Joe Pye weed, a tall, robust perennial often found in moist or wet soils. **Hemp-agrimony** (*Eupatorium cannabinum*)
