As we come into El Coto; quite the view to say the least. On the right is the "Teito" (Thatched Cabin), the thatched roof made of **broom** (*piorno*). These buildings were historically used by the *Vaqueiros* to shelter livestock and store hay. The sharp, needle-like peak on the far left of the skyline is **Peña Furada** (1,416m, 4,646 feet). The Picos de Albos (The White Giants), the massive, pale-grey massifs in the center background are the **Picos de Albos** [Albo Occidental and Oriental].
**The Glacial "V":** They sit at the head of the Valle del Lago. The deep, green valley floor you see winding between the mountains in the center leads directly toward the famous glacial lake. This is interesting - Geology: The "Terra Rossa" the **Red Earth**.
Iron Oxidation: The red tint in the soil and some of the rock patches is caused by Hematite.
* **Karst Process:** As the limestone dissolves over eons, insoluble iron minerals are left behind and "rust," creating the intense orange and red colors that contrast so beautifully with the green pastures.
