But it's a nice, unmarked trail following the W side of the big ravine and paralleling the #100 Christiansen Tr which is on the E side. The "Coral" is the main trail as you leave the W side of parking lot. The ravine was lit up in the yellow of flowering palo verdes, and I followed a symphomy of bees humming thru the blooms. Anyone stewing over the decline of the honeybee population would've been happy. This trail climbs gently up a bit, then continues along a mountain contour to the "Coral Mine" at 1.07 mi out, the #100 always in view, 100 yds off and 20-25' below. The sealed mine as seen high up via satellite is a reddish-brown smudge resembling a coral reef in a desert sea. The trail goes on beyond the mine, but it being late evening, I dropped down to the #100 and headed back to the TH, crossing three time over the big ravine before returning via the Coral route. It was a lonely trail -- one biker and a couple hiking -- and I liked that. |
