It was about 5 o'clock and I hiked uphill along the busy street to the pedestrian bridge, using the eastern part of the Coachwhip Trail. Then crossed over the street to the S side. Just behind the two ramadas, I hooked up with the H-2, or Arrowhead Trail, which takes you up to the highlands. Doing a long Zig and a shorter Zag, reached the first summit. GPS said it was 1,777' el. Great vista here. Looked S to the Gila Gap. Below was the attractive Arrowhead Lakes subdivision and its watery environs. Beautiful evening with a refreshing W breeze and now long shadows. This is a mostly treeless land of scrub with many large and blackened rocks. Not a great place for a summer hike. No shade. Dropped down into a saddle and sauntered NNE for about 10 minutes until reaching summit of Hill #2. GPS had it at 1,834' or 57' higher than #1. It was my first trip up here and was surprised to see a large American flag planted amid a huge pile of rocks at the top, flapping in the breeze. Wondered what the history of it was. I did my part, tossing a small rock onto the pile. Traffic picked up here. Lots of hikers coming up from the N on the switchbacks, most, it appeared, traveling from the eastern parking lot along Pinnacle Pk. If doing this hike again, I'll park there rather than off 59th, avoiding the rocky, uninteresting path up, with its vehicle noise. Came back to the two ramadas on the low and flat Coachwhip, H-1, and reached the parking lot about sunset, well satisfied with time spent. |
