| no partners | | Took the long way up to summit, from VC via paved road. Intended to amble through inner basin on a rare, temperate August evening with temp in 80s and light breeze from SW. Changed route after talking with long-time acquaintance Mike, who was preparing to lead group of 25 up Shaw Butte for a night view. Mike said a new crop of baby rattlesnakes, "stripers," had recently emerged on North Mountain. So up I went in search of photos, my snake portfolio being thin. Hadn't done elevation in a few months, and was surprised how little cardio I'd lost. Got to the summit 30 mins before sunset but, alas, saw no snakes. Waited with about a dozen others on top for what seemed would be a spectacular sunset at 7:24 and photo op. Lots of streaky clouds. Started back down at 7:30 a trifle disappointed with the sunset. Trail very busy. Counted 92 coming up on the pavement for night views, most all of them Hispanic. Four teen-age boys passed me on a sprint to the top. Saw only two hikers after leaving the pavement. Got back to VC at 8:15 in darkness with my flashlight dimming. In all, a very satisfying hike in unusual summer weather. It was my 9th time this year to summit North Mountain. It's a great track to get in shape. |
