Earlier this week I scanned my copy of the Superstition Wilderness Trails West by Carlson and Stewart and found that I've hiked most of the easily accessible hikes in the book (i.e., those that I can complete as a somewhat leisurely day hike). One area that I haven't been to was Bluff Spring Mountain, so that was my goal today.

I signed in at Peralta TH at 7:17 and headed up the Bluff Springs trail. I made it to the junction with Ely-Anderson just after 8:30. There was another hiker already on E-A about 10 minutes ahead of me. His name is Dave. We met at the rock wall where he was taking some photos. He was on his way to the summit to add a new register to the ammo can. We chatted for a minute, then he left for the summit and I headed north towards Hidden Valley.

I wanted to drop down into Hidden Valley to get a feel for the area for a future hike. As I was heading over, though, I decided to scrap that idea and just bag the summit. I was meeting friends for dinner later and didn't have time to commit to an adventure in Hidden Valley. I turned west towards the peak and found my new acquaintance there signing the register. I took my turn a few minutes later. We both took a seat below the ridgeline to get out of the brisk wind blowing across the summit. We had a nice view of Weaver's Needle while we enjoyed a snack.

Turns out that Dave supplied the original register and ammo can many years ago. The date he placed it there (I don't recall) is inscribed on the underside of the lid. He's also mentioned in the Trails West book as the person who provided Carlson and Stewart with the Northeast route down from Bluff Spring Mountain. I looked it up when I got home. There it was (bottom of p.149). Cool! Not wanting to miss an opportunity to hike with a person who knows the area so well, I asked if I could tag along on the way back to Peralta. He agreed.

We angled back to the E-A trail, then down. Back on the Bluff Springs trail, we headed east. Dave wanted to check out Bluff Springs for water flow. He will give this info to Carlson, who in turn lets the forest service know. If you're interested, flow was probably faster than you could filter it. We left the spring and headed back west towards Peralta. Dave also wanted to check out Williams camp, so we headed there next. We didn't find anything of note other than a piece of re-bar. No trace of a camp up there, but a shaft remains where the mine was.

We took another break at the approximate location of Williams Camp. Nice views all around - Miner's Needle to the east, Weaver's Needle to the west. As I looked around, I marveled at the numerous opportunities for further exploration just about everywhere you look from this vantage point. So many hikes, so little time!

Time to head back. Although we didn't see much sun today, it was nevertheless an enjoyable hike. Nice hiking with you Dave!
