We drove up super early (I'm probably never going to sleep in on a weekend again), and got started before 6:30. The weather was a little drizzly to start, but quickly cleared up and was gorgeous (and windy!) for the rest of the day. Just before reaching the Inner Basin, we ran into a very nervous bow hunter who had just seen a bear. He seemed a little surprised at my lack of concern, lol.
We took a short snack break at Doyle Saddle (is that what we're calling it these days?) and continued on our way. Just before the high point of Weatherford, Becky decided that high elevation wasn't her thing, and decided to head back down to the saddle. She urged me & Kristen to continue to the summit, and assured us that she would be just fine waiting. I was worried she would get cold at the saddle, and had anticipated someone potentially turning around, so I brought an extra car key along. I gave it to her and told her that if she got tired of waiting, to follow the Inner Basin/Lockett Meadow signs back to the car.
Kristen & I continued to the summit in some crazy winds. I always run (more like a slow jog) the last hundred feet or so the summit, which has Kristen convinced I'm crazy. It was a tough run today, the wind was nearly knocking me over with every step. We took a few pics at the top, then headed back down. There were surprisingly very few people on the summit today, although I did see a guy who made the entire hike in flip flops. We made fairly good time back down, and as we were starting to come back down on Weatherford, we saw Becky hiking up towards us. She had rested at Doyle Saddle for a while, then decided to keep heading up to see how far she could get. I was super impressed by her willingness to keep trying!
The three of us headed back down together, enjoying the 6 miles of downhill walking. We finished up just before 4:00, and managed to get home before 7:00, which included stops for gas and dinner. Great day with my sister, whom I don't get to see often enough! |
