Met up with Nick and Rosie in Payson at 6AM and drove on up to the Point trail, via 87 then 142 instead of the 260 route and 149.
Road conditions are much better with this route I would say. Several groups camped along 142 and along 142E. Made the quick drop to the creek and marched on upstream. I've been away from this area for a few years and I enjoyed each majestic view as if it was the first time I'd seen it. We hiked on upstream past a few campers at the spring, and found a nice little elevated spot to camp.
After a quick setup which did not include gathering firewood, we packed up some lunch and hiked on upstream. We passed a few other folks hiking downstream and some others looking for a campsite. Checked out the fake or real, pictographs, and continued until we reached the Maxwell trail. The poison ivy is getting pretty intense along this section of the creek. Caught one small trout that afternoon and a small mess of crawdads, which were added to supper. The creek is absolutely jammed with large crawdads right now. The clouds, lightning, and eventually heavy rain set in for the evening, but after a brief hiding in our tents, it stopped and allowed us to "not" have a fire for the evening. Although, others down in the canyon may have?
Sunday, everything was wet of course. The hike out included getting soaked by all of the trail side vegetation, but it was warming up so I didn't mind. As we were driving away down 142E I distinctly heard gunshots in a rapid pattern, didn't sound like hunters. Nick reminded me that there should not be any target shooting since Stage 1 was implemented? A quarter mile later we discovered the shooters' campsite. They also had a raging fire 30 feet from the road with kids running around all over. ](*,)
Good to see Nick and Rosie again, sorry to slow you down on the ascent...
