| no partners | | My wife, daughter, and a friend joined me for a hike down the Point Trail to West Clear Creek. From there, we hiked up canyon and then as far as we could go into Sundance Canyon. After that, we hiked back and took a look at Bear Canyon. We hiked out just as it was starting to rain.
None of us had done much of this type of hiking - we probably spent more time in the water than was really needed. (On the way back, I saw folks staying a lot drier than we were.) However, I don't think it's possible to go very far without getting wet.
When we crossed into Sundance, the water ended up being around neck level for me - a few strokes of swimming were needed to get to shallower water.
We didn't go into Bear Canyon - I didn't feel like pushing through the foliage.
I watched for poison ivy on the way down and while we were in WCC. I didn't see any until we were hiking back up. And, once I saw it, I started seeing quite a lot of it. (Well, at least I think I did. I'm posting a photo of one of the plants which I think is poison ivy.) My daughter touched one of these plants. We gave her some wipes to clean the affected area; no rash or itching so far, but it's still early.
The area is beautiful; I want to go back to explore further. In the future, we'll all apply some pre-contact poison ivy barrier to exposed skin.
I also want to find a better solution for protecting my camera from water. I used a zip lock bag which I then placed into my regular camera bag. It was tedious to remove it and then put it back in every time I wanted to take a picture.
I typically use a GPS watch to keep track of distance, time, elevation gain, etc. My Suunto Ambit 3 did not work very well for that purpose on this hike. When I got back, it showed a total distance of 5.7 miles with an elevation gain of 2280 feet. In actuality, we went no more than 2 miles.
For this hike, I used a new pack - the Kolob from Imlay Canyon Gear. I put almost everything into dry bags and didn't worry about it getting wet. It works awesomely well - despite going into water up to my neck several times, the bag drained quickly. |
