Started at Rock Crossing trailhead, made the drop into Clear Creek, and then kept going until I got to the spot I reached last month from the Rim Road. Then went back the same way, just so I could make the climb out of Clear Creek again! (Since the car was still parked at the same spot, that helped too ...) Clear Creek was a highlight; totally lived up to its name with shallow water over the pebbly bottom. After a stretch where the AZT follows FR 123A, I missed the cairn and turnoff the first time where the AZT turns south and leaves the road. Ended up going a short distance on 123; then, when I didn't find a junction, I went back to 123A and saw the cairn this time. I included a picture of it for reference! Like I found on the first part, the key word for Blue Ridge is "ponderosa" (as writelots said on the description of the nearby Happy Jack passage, it's pondo, pondo, pondo, pondo.) I got to finish the hike with one of those great hiking moments. There's a meadow just south of the Rock Crossing trailhead, and it was covered with flowers (and lots of grass) after the rains. With the flowers, there were butterflies flying EVERYWHERE. I didn't even get the camera out to try to get the picture; just enjoyed flowers and butterflies! |
