| no partners | | The best part: down by the river. Pleasant, calf-deep water to cross, and there was a hiking stick available right where the trail met the river. I used it for crossing, and then going up and down Polles Mesa, and re-crossing; left it back by the river where I found it. Otherwise, there were some tough parts to this hike, especially by late morning when it got pretty warm. I'd read all about the trail up Polles Mesa, and it was what it was: steep and rocky (and unshaded). I went a little ways along the mesa before it was time to turn around; again, I'll have to save the last part of this section for another time! The part that was surprising (to me) for not being as easy as I expected was the road from the trailhead to the AZT. I had this mentai picture that if the road starts at a trailhead by the river, and ends at a ranch by the river, then it probably "winds around the hills" (as the description says) down near the river. Well ... no. It goes up a lot, and then down a lot, and then up and down a lot again. That was fine (though surprising) in the early morning, but was more tiresome when it was warmer around noon. Not many people today, until I was starting on the drive back from the trailhead to Payson, and there was a whole group of jeeps and other 4WD coming in. |
