We decided to go for the burn and hike in on the trails from Needle Vista so we didn't cross any of the closed area. I missed a few turn options in the dark but there are several so we just took the next turn. The hike in was nice and we made it into Garden Valley before the sun hit. The burn area was as good as could be expected. It seems the fire moved quickly through the grasses so the bushes, trees and cactus didn't receive as much damage as areas did from the Sawtooth fire. The TNF website only lists Peralta trail as being closed while Black Mesa and Second Water trails are listed as open. We just hiked to the intersection, looked at the ruins took some photos and turned back. We did not see any smoke in the air but the fire is still listed as active in the east. We checked out Hackberry Spring and finally hit sunlight on the way up the trail climbing out. We dropped into a wash for the final mile or so and ran into one of Denny's family. We finished up by 8 am and pretty much stayed out of the heat. There were no other vehicles parked in the Needle Vista lot but about 6 vehicle were parked at the end of First Water road by the barricades. Thanks for the hike Denny. |
