Really getting to like the Goldfields. Started from the parking lot near Javelina Mine Trail well before sunrise, and hiked along the Apache Trail (no cars at all) to FR1356. Then hiked that one and reached the junction next to Top Hat around sunrise. Pretty easy to find the turnoff later from the wash to Horse With No Name. Took the loop that goes west, then back east, and ended up back in the wash. This was the tiresome part of the hike, coming back along the wash to re-join the southern part of Horse With No Name. Plenty of sand to sink into, and if not sand then just rocks. Found the trail again to go east, and was fooled for a minute because it heads back north just above the wash. Soon there's a switchback, though, and Horse With No Name starts going into wonderful yellow slickrock. Coming up from the west, nothing prepared me for what the view would be like from the top: all the cliffs and canyons of the eastern Goldfields, with Four Peaks in the distance (and of course, Weaver's Needle and Superstition Mountain). The trail was fun too across the rock. Finished by going down FR something-or-other, then to 1356, down to the Willow Connector, and over to Javelina Mine to finish. Saw 6 horses, two dirt bikes, and two other hikers on the way out, plus adilling silhouetted up on top of Top Hat at sunrise. Great morning to be out! Got me inspired to catch up on a few triplogs ... sometime soon, now that it's Christmas break.
