Here's the plan: park a car at Quartz Trailhead, and hike with my son and daughter to Lost Dog Wash trailhead, and meet my wife and other son there for a picnic. Nice point-to-point hike. We'd just crossed the road from the Quartz parking lot and were about to step on the trail, when my daughter asked this question:
"Do you think there'll be snakes out?"
Me: "Probably not; might be a little cool today, but I'll sure keep my eyes open."
"I'll let you go in front."
Less than thirty seconds later on the trail, we heard the buzzing, really loud. He was off to the side on the other side of a brittlebush, head up but otherwise beautifully camouflaged in the grass. Still buzzed even after we'd backed away far enough to take pictures; finally slithered away. Next question: "Does the other place have wider trails?" I replied that they were definitely wider, and more travelled, than Quartz Trail -- so we changed plans and drove to Lost Dog. (But she was still ready to hike even after seeing, right next to us, the last thing she wanted to see!) We ended up hiking Sunrise Trail as far as we had time for before joining the rest of the family for the picnic. Flowers everywhere, especially brittlebush and lupine. Good news: there's more hikes ahead of us with school being out, with the only condition being that we go when it's cooler and the snakes are sleeping.
