I remember reading a comment from Tibber a long time ago, about this passage (I think it was Tibber ...) -- describing it as "Pondo, pondo, pondo." I thought that was a really fun way to say it, judging from the pictures, and now I'm seeing it for myself! Very open, pleasant area -- not much scenic variety, but the short drop into Jacks Canyon was an okay change. Way back in 4th grade we learned the regions of Arizona -- "Plateau", "Mountain", etc. -- but when I'm slowly walking through it the differences are amazing. As I was going through the mostly-flat Happy Jack forests, I thought of the Saddle Mountain/Mazatzal trails I was on a month ago -- pretty good contrast! Anyway, that's enough reflection on Arizona geography. Turned around a while after climbing out of Jacks Canyon, when it was time to get back to the car for the drive back. Saw several elk on the first part of the trail (too far away for a picture), and waited for a herd of over a dozen to cross the 87 on the drive in the morning. |
