After the short connector trail from Cross F trailhead, Little Saddle Mountain goes up a canyon that was musical with water flowing all the way, and plenty of early-morning birds too. Early morning was perfect -- hiking in the shade, with the sun lighting up the ridges ahead. After climbing out of the canyon, the middle part of the trail was nice but nothing spectacular -- chaparral-covered hills with the skeletons of trees from the Sunflower Fire, I'm guessing. And then the views started -- clear enough that the McDowells were close-by, and I could see the White Tanks and Estrellas in the distance. Then the other way toward Mt. Ord; let's say I liked this part! Went about 1/2 mile past the junction with the Saddle Mountain Trail, which was all I had time for. I'll have to save the top part of this section of the AZT for another day. Only saw a couple of people for most of the morning, then about a dozen in the canyon on the last part coming down. |
