| no partners | | I had planned the 'Hood Walk as I needed to get the mail but when I stepped out to check the temp in my backyard, I decided to gear up and go for a hike; especially since it looks like it's supposed to rain tomorrow when I have planned a longer hike.
I parked at the hill below the parking area. Hiked clockwise. As I walked up the hill heading east I encountered a girl moving a rifle case and a baby in a stroller. Not too far in front of me was a person carrying a sizable rifle walking in crocs. He stopped at the top of the hill and watched the helicopter as did I. I remarked "boys and their toys" as I sure didn't want to find out if I was going to be his target practice. I thot as I had walked up the hill to the west of the parking area that I heard shots and pretty sure I smelled a scent that was not coming from the desert too. I really wasn't too sure what to make of this situation, like should I call the police? are you allowed a rifle in a Preserve? Do I want to try and get a picture? Well, that was a heck of a way to start off Plan B.
It was pretty breezy, thank goodness as even with the breeze, I was using my bandana to wipe my brow quite often. I didn't wear a hat or sunglasses as the sky was muted somewhat by the cloud cover. I appreciated the trail work as I skirted the south side and encountered about 5 hikers on this side. I took a few pics of the scenery due to the somewhat unusual light of the sky as I circled the mountain.
When I started to round the western side, the sun was playing in the sky with the cloud cover which created quite a line of sight to the mountains far away to the NW. I was really enjoying the hike as I continued around the west side encountering one more hiker and snapping a few more photos. When I headed east and near what I now call the Christmas Star saguaro (where I shot my photos of the Christmas star in Dec 2020) I saw the sun doing some tricks so tried to capture it with the saguaro. I was so pleased when I got home and saw the photo on my screen turned out almost better than I had hoped; not bad for a city hike I say.
As I finished off the hike getting one more picture I saw three more people and a dog. The desert smelled so good. I know there is one other thing I wanted to remember to report but I can't remember.
I thot I had turned my watch off but apparently not. However, I can tell you when I started the hike it was 80.5 with 68% humidity and I did happen to check my phone when I got back in the car and it said 79 and 72% humidity when I stopped.
Not sure why the loaded RS route shows a start time of 11:17AM when I started at 6:17PM. |

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
