2-19-2022 – Pena Blanca area

9:25 – Left the truck
9:40 – fence in the saddle –
10:10 – base of cliffs
11:01- Top of cliffs – Which is not the top of the Mtn.
11:56 – Turn around point – lunch and rest for the steep trip down
12:20 – Headed down.
1:15- In the canyon by the cistern where the old concrete watering troughs are.
2:10 – back at the truck

4 and a half hours. – There are two reasons this took so long for 2 miles…
1. This is insanely steep
2. The views are amazing
3. I’m old.
Rests = an hour or so.
Really steep from the saddle to the base of the cliffs. It got steeper the closer to the base of thie cliffs. A few erosion hollows that offered some shade.
The width of the cliff at the bottom was about 50 yards by the time you get to the top its about 20 feet. Very steep. Hands and feet in a few places and a couple of ledges to pull up and over.
At the turn around point there are some monoliths that gave some nice shade.

Opted for a shorter way down this time.
In places it was as steep as coming down the cliff near the top of Atascosa.
The way back through the canyon is deep gravel in most places.
There were LOTS of footprints. In the gravel. The tread from some of them was easily visible.

After the hike.. dinner in Pena Blanca Canyon on the South side. Dinner was almost done and I saw someone running across the hill side about 40 yards away. Then another and another. All in all, there were over 20 of them. They probably noticed the fire and turned then hunched down behind some brush.
The leader yelled andale and they all stated running up the hillside and disappeared.
Starting temp was 44. Back at the truck = 74
<3 pints of water used.
Lunch was sausage and egg Mcmuffin and a pear.
Next time I want to start earlier and go all the way to the end of the ridge which is about another mile.
Good one!
