Route Scout Route Recorded  on Route Scout Popup | MapDEX
There was a lot of buzzing going on with the Palo Verde blooming all over the place. And it was loud buzzing; made me a little nervous actually. Kelly would not have liked parts of this hike, that's for sure. But for most of it, when I was in the center of the Preserve, all was quiet except for all the hikers and many, many bike riders; after all, it's Saturday morning.

I did feel the humidity at the start and my gluteus maximus was still pretty sore so it was probably a good thing I didn't do my Barbell Strength as getting up from that first squat would have been doubtful  . And thus, I had to change my grandiose route I had somewhat planned the nite before. However, I did find some new territory as I tried to incorporate a little elevation from time to time. I started at 38th St TH and headed west and around the hills of Happy Hour Ridge all around to the west side and then back up the middle and down, (south) over to 1A where I was just going to hike to Irregular C junction and back.

I saw another trail over to the NW and don't recall that I've hiked over there before but if so, it's been quite some time. I think I was on part of the Dreamy Draw Nature Trail (FYI that TH is still closed but I think they are close to finishing up that new pipeline). The traffic noise is pretty loud here. I checked out this little ridgeline and wondered why Karl and Kathy don't use this as the Happy Hour meet up. In fact, there is a nice flat spot to lay out the goods they bring. So that inspired me to call Cathy to see if she was home as I was a hop, skip, and jump from her house but she was heading out of town. So I looked around some more and checked out another ridge when I realized it looked like there might be an old filled-in mind adit that I was passing by and it was surrounded in quartz too; you can actually see that quartz on satellite view.

I headed back the way I came and back up on to 1A where I felt my gluteus had stretched out enough to do VOAZ so I proceeded up that behind four bike riders. The last rider had stopped to gather his strength and then pedaled as fast as he could to get up this one section; he made it without stopping. It was funny to watch. I gave him kudos at the saddle.

I went down the 302 and then over on the 304 making a mental note to take the 302 down to Piestewa Park one of these times. As I headed west, I gave thot to doing a U of the 304/8 but I decided I was hungry so headed back north off of the 304 to the eastern shoe of the 1A. As I came over the saddle by what is called the Valley Throne, the color of the Palo Verde was lighting up this valley. I think I got one good picture of it as the show was fabulous; it would get particularly noisy as I made my way east near the drainages where many of these trees were abuzz with BEES!

I crossed over the drainage and by it where the sound of the bees was so loud I thot to maybe record it but you've all heard it before. Needless to say, I picked up my pace a bit. So far I've been lucky in my life as I've never been stung by a bee. It was another good hiking morning in the Valley of the Sun; better enjoy it while I can and it really is so much better than going to the gym.

WATCH: 6.43 miles (low point 1480, high point 1922) avg 126 bpm, 151 max (30% Zone 3, 59% Zone 2 and 11% Zone 1) burning 968 calories finishing at 10:14AM. Starting temp a lovely 60.7 degrees and sunny with 30% humidity.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
