Every time I hike up cardiac hill I ask myself why I'm I doing this. lol I absolutely hate it and I'm not sure what's worse going up or down as your feet and knees take a beating going down. Headed down into Barks Canyon, up the short ridge, past the Terrapin Junction and headed down Bluff Spring Canyon. Hiked over to Bluff Spring and made a stop at my once favorite shaded campground which is now a barely shaded brushy mess from the fire a few years back. As I took a break there, the clouds started to roll in and thunder continuously echoed through the canyon. I thought about waiting it out, but decided to push on. As I made it back to the Terrapin Junction huge rain drops started coming down. There was zero cover in this area so nothing I could do but push on. Made it back to my rig just as the storm was moving on, go figure lol. Tons of water in Barks Canyon and even more in Bluff Spring Canyon from all of the rain lately. The trail from the Terrapin Junction on to Bluff Spring is extremely brushy, you never lose the trail but the catclaw and holly let you know they are there. Came across a couple as I was coming into Bluff Spring Canyon and one ranger on a 4 day backpacking trip as I was heading out of Barks Canyon and that was it. Temps were awesome but the humidity was not. Some of the worst humidity I've hiked in, made it a drag at times, but any day in the Superstitions is never a bad day. Just over 8 miles at 1,600 AEG, not a bad day in the humid conditions. |
