| partners | | Met Jason at the First Water TH just before 0630. Headed east on Second Water trail, using lights for the first mile or so. South on Black Mesa Trail—rocky as usual but in typical condition.
Quick jaunt on Dutchman before turning off towards Palomino Mtn/Aylor’s Arch. Lots of water in the creekbed, forcing some workarounds. The steep trail from the creek to the top is reasonably defined. Having a pole helps on the loose rock. We took our time at the top, looking around, having a snack, and taking pics. The clouds made for some nice shots.
Careful descent, then made our way over to Boulder Canyon. The south end of the trail is vague at best, with a lot of catclaw. At one point, I got suckered to the west on a trail leading through some campsites. Quickly caught the error and worked our way back to the trail. The farther north we went, the better the trail definition and less catclaw. Slipped on mud/wet rock at one point and landed hard on my right hip—I’ll feel that for a few days. Took Second Water west to complete the loop.
Saw very few other hikers today, which was kind of surprising. Weather was just about perfect, cool and mostly cloudy, although a bit warm when the sun came out on the climb up Second Water in the afternoon. Great to meet Jason and hike with him, fun conversation throughout the day. |
