After driving in the early morning darkness, we arrived at the Logan Canyon Highway for our morning hike and photoshoot on an AZ Highways Photoscape at Silver Lake. The hopeful objective was to see the moose as it is a common site here. But my year would remain mooseless
The easy hike starts on a boardwalk to a dock that breaks away from the main boardwalk and extends out into Silver Lake. The sky was overcast for the first little bit but then we were provided with some intermittent blue sky so that we can have a nice shot of the reflection and fall color. After hiking along a part of the trail via the wetlands, you suddenly find yourself in a pine forest. Here I saw some chipmunks running around but one stopped long enough to eat his food on a branch of a tree so I was able to film it. I continued along the dirt trail and made my way to the other side of the lake. There are other hikes that branch off from this hike and lead you to other lakes (Twin Lakes Trail, Lake Solitude Trail, and the Brighton Lakes Trail). It might be worth checking out if you're near SLC
I saw some more reflection of the fall-touched mountains in the water so I took some more pictures. I caught up with Ambika so we hiked together for a bit to another dock area. You couldn't complete the loop today due to construction so we headed back. On our hike back, very near the trail, we got to enjoy a chipmunk eating a piece of grass.
As I rounded a corner I could see a group down by the water so I ventured to check it out. There was a busy beaver and a few photographers trying to get in on some of the action. I got a few pics and a movie but not great; I had filmed a beaver earlier. There were ducks swimming around too. It was turning into a beautiful morning as the sun tried to come out. I stopped to photograph one of the water outlets in the thick grass and because I was able to get the background with a sky; I flipped the photo and submitted it for the review session. It baffled our lead photographer. But you know me, I like doing that with some of my reflection shots .
We ended up waiting for another photographer to get back before we could leave. We were always waiting for him. He was very dedicated to his craft and spent every last minute wherever we went. In fact, several of the photographers on this trip, especially the older ones, were always impressing me with how assertive they were with trying to get "that" shot. Next up was the drive to Bloods Lake Trailhead up on Guardsman Pass. In the winter, the road is closed from Brighton. The views from the TH were very pretty as there is fall color all around you. It's a very nice TH too. On our way back to Layton, we pulled over at Mill D North Fork TH where once again there is another hike you can do and it starts going UP right away. We didn't go very far as it was an unscheduled stop. The fall colors with all the reds was simply stunning!
After our critique session we headed back out to Antelope Island where we spent the morning and evening yesterday. We would also go to Antelope Island one more time for a sunset shoot the following day. It was only 1/2 hour from the hotel in Layton, thus why we spent a lot of time there. Plus there were antelope, bison and burrowing owls plus a great lake and mountain backdrop in three directions.
On the next two and a half days, we did quite a bit of walking almost everywhere we went:
9-29-2022 Bear River Migratory Refuge. Once again, if you're in the north Salt Lake area, this is a fun self-guided auto tour https://www.visitutah.com/places-to-go/ ... ird-refuge. And if you're near here, it's not too far to check out the locomotive show Golden Spike National Historical Park https://www.nps.gov/gosp/index.htm.
9-30-2022 Logan Canyon Scenic Byway US Route 89 https://www.explorelogan.com/assets/fil ... canyon.pdf to Second Dam walk/photoshoot. This is part of the Logan River Hiking Trail within the Wasatch Range. I walked the area (trail) in both directions. It was pretty cold as we were there early in the morning. Next we drove northeast on the highway to a pullout to catch some Fall colors before heading over to Huntsville, UT, after lunch, for our last stop. It is a beautiful little town where we walked around but the main focus was the barn art in the area. And, of course, the distant views.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
