| no partners | | Today I decided to hike to Peak 5026 (elevation of 5,026 feet and prominence of 1,142 feet), which is the second highest peak in the Harquahala Mountains.
Believe it or not there are 3 peaks in Arizona named Peak 5026. One is in the Bradshaw Mountains, about 10 miles from Mount Union. Another one is on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, near Hog Mountain. Then there is this one which is 3 miles NE of Harquahala Peak.
There was no trail on this hike, although the first mile or so was on an old mining road. After that it was mostly some light bushwhacking, and occasionally I could follow what appeared to be wild burro trails. There was not an intuitive route to follow, and I did not see the peak until I was about 1/2 mile from it.
Apparently this was once a big mining area, and I saw some ruins as well as some mine shafts and adits.
I was the fifth person in 25 years to sign the summit register, so it is safe to say that this peak is seldom hiked. If you are looking for solitude, you are almost guaranteed to find it out there.
It was a nice day and I enjoyed the hike in spite of the off-trail bushwhacking that I did. There were some nice 360 degree views at the summit, so I hung out up there for a bit while I ate lunch. |

Wildflowers Observation Light
Wildflowers were light, although I saw several of the usual suspects. I'd say that Indian Paintbrush stood out the most. |
