| no partners | | It seemed like a long time since I had a pack on my back so wanted something with water and not too far away. It has been maybe 25-30 years since I had been in Aravaipa proper. I don't remember if you even needed a permit then. Being retired has some benefit as I was the only permit holder for the east side for a couple of days.
Saddled up near 100 degrees; humidity was felt but not bad yet. A few miles in and set up camp; no sleeping bag or tent, just my poncho tarp for some protection and I inflated my pad on top of the bivy; that in case of flooding rains only. Draped the mosquito netting although the bugs did not seem to be bad.
Wandered wading and taking pictures. The night nice with thunder and lightning at times, light rain, and a couple of fireflies! Haven't seen those since my childhood in Tennessee. Next day out to dayhike a couple of sidecanyons, nice to see some springs running. A comical moment in a few feet from the bone dry bottom almost stuck in mud that I sank in well over my boots to try to fill a bottle at a running spring in ferns after struggling thru raspberry vines.
Saw some coati and some deer; lots of bird calls. Saw no humans. Decided to drive out a little early on the permit because the storms were brewing and I wanted views out of the canyon. Got those, home to puddles of water in the backyard. A good few days, and nice to see I may still have it regarding backpacking. |
