I have a low opinion of politicians and politics in general. They are all selective liars IMO. But you have to give the new guys a chance. The drumbeat is the border is closed. Not for all the gotaways.
I had other plans but Sat was the community garage sale so I postponed it to come down here today. More border patrol on the main road; expected. I went down on the secondary road then took the nasty high route tertiary road which gives good views but some white knuckle driving.
I hiked near the road closure to look over some mining ruins. They must have some tech as I was soon buzzed by a border patrol helicopter who flew over me twice.
I then went down to the wall. The aid station was still up but no guard present. No one was there. The fire pits showed fresh use and the inside of the one tepee showed recent use. I walked down to the end of the wall, stepped across and photographed signage for the travelers coming across, in multiple languages. Badly trashed on the Mexico side.
I saw a couple of flowers and some ocotillo were blooming, but a lot of the oaks looked pretty bad. I then drove to a nearby tank area. The last part of the road was totally washed out so I parked and walked to the tank, surprisingly with some gross water. Scared off a pair of ducks. I was in sandals and no pack just the camera around my neck and one trekking pole and decided to come back down the canyon. This included a downclimb and some caution as some fresh sign in the canyon and plenty of debris in the boulders. Back to the Jeep somewhat scratched up but no biggie. Drove out and saw no one until the main road. So, as I thought, most politicians are FOS and some of these guys are no different. No border patrol stationed near the end of the fence, no military, nothing.
In the pics you will see some paving of the road at the fence. That was done by the previous administration, to my amazement, along with some wall gaps closed in this section.
