Barely 8 minutes after completing our longest time/distance and most AEG hike of our SE AZ trip (Echo Loop - Inspiration - Massai) we would top it off with a hike to the highest point inside the Chiricahua National Monument, which will turn out to be our shortest and least AEG. And just what happens to be the highest point in the park? Why Sugarloaf Mountain, of course!

After a quick lunch at the Echo Canyon TH we drove the short distance to the Sugarloaf TH, finding only one vehicle at the TH. Ok, so we expected to meet at least one hiker if not a couple or group. As we continued we kept wondering when we would meet up. After reaching the ranger station at the top without ever encountering anyone, we were a bit perplexed. I wandered around a bit looking for someone but saw no one. The only place I did not look was inside a port-a-potty type of outhouse, but heard nothing over the 5-10 minutes we were at the top, so doubted anyone was inside.

Oh well, let's head back down. And the rest of the hike we kept wondering where they were off to, if they had fallen, or something of the sort. It was some distance back down the trail before we encountered other hikers, a couple, then another couple and another before meeting with a half-dozen men who were part of a Wildfire Crew from Santa Clara CA who were tasked to be SE AZ for some time... I suppose unless/until needed for wildfires in California.

When we reached the trailhead we found the same car was still there. So I took note of the out-of-state license plate with the thought of stopping at the Visitor Center on the way out of the park to let them know of a possible lost hiker. But as it turned out, as we were driving the half-mile back toward Echo Canyon TH, here was a young couple walking along the road toward us. Now why they had parked at Sugarloaf only to hike somewhere from Echo Canyon TH, who knows. It didn't appear they were that well prepared for what may have been a long hike earlier before and now in direct sun and temps into the mid 80's it looked like they were pretty well wiped out. Whatever, we assumed they were the owners of the car so no need for a stop at the Visitor Center.

So after two days in the Chiricahua National Monument, we were ready to hit the Cochise Stronghold Trail tomorrow in the Dragoon Mountains.

We have had many visits to the Wonderland of Rocks, but my partner had never been on Sugarloaf, Ed Riggs or Hailstone trails ... let's get'um done!

First up Sugarloaf - Nice warmup to the top. Excellent 360 views with a cool fire lookout on top.
Lookout on the National Historic Lookout Register.

Next up Echo Canyon - We completed the loop counter clockwise.
Hoodoos, lunch at Echo Park & then more Hoodoos back to the parking area.

Got a tad warm at the end under the clear blue skies.
Just a couple of deer on Sugarloaf and many buzzards overhead was the wildlife spotted.

Stopped at Big Tex Bar-B-Que in Wilcox for burgers before the drive back home.

Rock Wonderful my partner called it, good trip!
:D

I've had this peak on my list for quite some time, and finally decided to take it on one evening before camping. I ended up starting the hike a little after 5 pm and it took me about 1 hour at a relaxed pace to do the roundtrip. In the summer months, starting at 5 or 6 pm is probably a good start time since it can get quite hot in the earlier hours. It was warm but comfortable in the later hours. The trail was well-maintained and very enjoyable. This hike would probably be fine for beginner hikers. Near the beginning, there's a small tunnel that the trail goes through. At the top is an old fire lookout building which was built in 1935.

AEG = 498 feet

Hiked Surgarloaf Mountain on our 2nd day in Chiricahua.

On Day 2 of our Wilcox trip we planned to do Sugarloaf mountain and Natural Bridge trail, we did Sugarloaf first.

This was a nice quick summit hike. It was fairly popular (for Chiricahua) but we were able to get a parking spot without having to wait.

There were some views of the hoodos on the way up but the vantage from the summit was much better. There is a fire watch station at the top. It was not occupied while we were there but looks like it still sees occasional usage.

This was a good little warmup hike, well worth doing if you are in the area.

I decided to head down to the Chiricahuas and hike to a couple of fire lookouts that I had not been to before. On the way back to Phoenix, I took a detour and went to the Johnny Ringo gravesite.

Sugarloaf Mountain LO
This is a nice little hike within the Chiricahua National Monument. The gravel trail contours around the side of the mountain on the way to the top. Along the way, there are nice views of the pinnacles in the park.

The lookout cabin on top is still intact, and appears to still be used; however nobody was there when I was there. The lookout structure was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

This is a nice hike to do if you are visiting the Chiricahua NM.

I did not see anyone else until I was almost back to the TH -- someone was coming up the trail wearing sandals without any water. Thankfully the temperaure was 75 instead of 110!

Barfoot Lookout
The Barfoot LO is atop Buena Vista Peak at the north end of the Crest Trail.

I started from Barfoot Park and went on a marked trail that led up to the Crest Trail at a junction at a saddle south of Buena Vista Peak. I then took the Crest Trail up to the Barfoot LO at the summit.

The road to the Barfoot LO is a bit rocky toward the end of it, although I saw a sedan at the TH. However, I think that I'd at least want an SUV to make the drive.

The trail from Barfoot Park was slightly overgrown, but not bad. There was one place where I had to gingerly climb over an uprooted tree.

The Barfoot LO was built by the CCC in 1935. Sadly, it was engulfed by the Horseshoe Two Fire on June 2, 2011. All that remains of the LO is the concrete foundation.

There are nice views at the summit, so this one is worth checking out imho.

Johnny Ringo Gravesite
This is an easy nature walk to check out a bit of Arizona history.

Stats for each of the 3 hikes are below. The stats above are the sum of the 3.
Sugarloaf: 2.0 miles with 487 feet of AEG
Barfoot: 1.8 miles with 595 feet of AEG
Ringo: 0.1 miles with 7 feet of AEG

First time to the Chiricahua National Monument, so I took the loop counterclockwise plus a trip to inspiration point and a hike afterward up Sugarloaf Mountain.

Heart of Rocks Loop was the highlight of the trip, Though Echo Canyon is also incredible. Echo Park was burned but still enjoyable, and the SE corner of the hike around Big Balanced Rock Trail and Inspiration Point is burned as well. On the plus side, the views are expansive on this side of the loop because of the elevation and lack of trees. Inspiration Point is a nice side trip with little elevation gain. Riggs Trail was chewed up but was being worked on. The trails were so nicely maintained, you could forget you're in the wilderness.

Sugarloaf Mountain was better than I expected, and it made more sense to add it on after I had finished with the loop; the trailhead is close by, it's short, and it doesn't take long for the payoff. Lookout was closed.

Passed only two hikers on the trail all day, and when I got back to the car there were under a half dozen cars in the Echo Canyon lot.

I went back to the Chiricahua National Monument to finish up a couple of trails I didn't get to last week when I was here. The first hike was Sugarloaf Mountain. Not much of a hike, only 1.9 miles round trip with about 500 AEG. What it lacked as a hike was made up for by the views. Much better visibility this week since there was no wind. Could see 100 miles to the Catalina Mountains near Tucson. If it were winter just after a winter storm the details of the distant mountains would be better.

Easy hike and worth doing if you are in the area. Could be used as a warm-up hike if you do those or an after hike if you have an hour to kill. Early morning around sunrise or at sunset would just add frosting on the cake or should I say sugarloaf. I wanted to get here earlier than 0800 but had a brain fart just outside of Wilcox and took a wrong turn and ended up going out of my way for about a half hour. The Load popping sound in the Valley south of Wilcox was me pulling my head out of my rear. Alls well that ends well though.

Made it to the National Monument to camp for the night and hiked up Sugarloaf to see the sunset over the heart of rocks. This is a surprisingly nice little hike that I've always wanted to do while in the Chiricahuas.

Thanks to joebartels, the_eagle, and tortoise-hiker for the route!

Pretty phenomenal area. I had seen pictures of the hoodoos, but I didn't realize how massive many of them are, nor how diverse. Most striking though was the otherworldly quality of the place, particularly Echo Canyon and the Heart of Rocks...it's...freaky...and awesome.

Two firsts for me: (1) AZ hike outside Tucson, and (2) coati sighting  - he was having a leisurely rummage around the gulch below Mushroom Rock.

we spent the weekend up in pinery canyon, and no weekend in the area would be complete without hiking up to sugarloaf. it was actually manned - i've been up to so many of these towers over the past couple of years without having anyone to talk to when i got there (besides bobby, lol). steve bovee (http://trustartanddesi...) was up there with his two dogs. he told us that he was up at barfoot the day before it burned. he thought he'd have a chance to save the osborne fire finder from there and had it burn to nearly nothing. he told us how he thought that fire could've been prevented from coming up to the monument. he was used to being at monte vista lookout, and he wasn't too fond of the heat at sugarloaf. it was a good visit. interesting guy with loads of stories to tell. wish i could listen all day, but we had to get back home.

De-double-n-why graciously took Bruce and myself to Rhyolite Tuff Disneyland :y:

Lower Rhyolite is a very nice national park quality groomed trail. Echo Canyon Trail is my favorite. It made me feel like a kid gasping in glee around several turns and overlooks. We worked up to Sugarloaf then back down to Ed Riggs. It was a windy day so that was my least favorite portion. It would be a nice hike on any other day.

Mushroom Rock looks like a Star Wars space ship. Inspiration Point is worth the overlook. Big Balanced Rock is the most fascinating balanced rock I've ever seen. Heart of Rocks Loop is a fan favorite but didn't touch my heart like Echo Canyon. Old Maid is questionable. All the other rock formations are cool.

With little sleep heading in, Sarah Deming was a little draggy.

After nearly two decades of anticipation it was exciting to finally see this national park!

Up at 2:30a, home at 10:00pm, is close to the definition of a day hike.

Denny provided the impetus to get this one done. If he keeps reading his food book, we'll get to a lot of other new areas. :y:

We saw some of flocks of deer, including 2 dudes with nice racks on the way in. Also were treated to some Coatimundi while hiking. : :D

We were spoiled all day with perfect weather and pristinely groomed trails. Temps ranged from 50 to no more than 68, with a breeze.

We did a clockwise loop including side trips to Sugarloaf, Inspiration Point and Heart of Rocks Loop.

Lower Rhyolite Canyon Trail, starts off this track in the pines with sneak peeks at the hoodoos.

Left on Upper Rhyolite Canyon Trail and you start the climb to the fun.

Bypass Hailstone Trail and hit Echo Canyon Trail. This is the crème de la crème in the park. Here you are walking amungst the tall spires. Wow, just wow.
Echo Canyon Video :next: https://youtu.be/Ow ... Dx1M

A hike up Sugarloaf Mountain Trail provides a great 360 overlook of the area.
Sugarloaf Mountain Video :next: https://youtu.be/T- ... WNjI

Ed Riggs Trail and Mushroom Rock Trail lead you to the next highlight side trip.

Inspiration Point Trail, is only a 1/2 mile one way. The destination packs some more incredible views.

Big Balanced Rock Trail leads you to..... duh.... how does it not fall over. After the geometry lesson the
amazing Heart of Rocks Loop is right there. Recommend doing this Clockwise for the views and to take advantage of the signage.
Big Balanced Rock & Heart of Rocks Loop :next: https://youtu.be/o6 ... -slI

The Sara Demming Trail starts you back downhill. It was on this trail, in the tall pines, that we saw our swarm of Coatimundi. I found this to be an enjoyable wind down trail.

This ones a must do, if you haven't.....

Thanks for putting this together Denny plus Driving/Dinner.

One word..... Hailstone

Joe and Bruce joined me for another hike out of my Boots and Burgers Book. The book has a shorter loop to get to the Heart of Rocks Loop. Bruce added some extras for our loop so we could get our monies worth out of the long drive. We were glad he did as some of the extras were pretty cool too. All the trails were nice with Echo Canyon, Inspiration Point, Big Balanced Rock, Heart of Rocks being the highlights. Throw in Joe and Bruce, a couple Coatimundis, and great weather and it made for an awesome trip. Thanks Gentlemen! :y:

Second hike of the day and probably the most under rated hike in the Chiricahua Monument. Parking lot was empty. Looks like the trip up would be steep, but except for the last few hundred feet it's very gentle.

Views were fantastic all the way up. The little tunnel created by the CCC back in the day was a nice surprise. Great look at Cochise head as you climb. Were a bunch of caterpillars on the rocks and shrubs. The 360 views from the top are fantastic. Gave us a nice preview of tomorrow's Big Loop hike.

We started hiking up the trail late in the day with the plan to admire sunset up top. This is another very easy trail with a modest gain. We topped out and enjoyed a summit beer while we waited for the sun to set. We figured we’d be the only ones on the summit until another couple walked up right before the sun set. They had the same idea as us. We enjoyed the sunset and then made the quick return back to the jeep. From there we returned to the campsite and settled in for the evening.

I wanted to view the sunset somewhere largely due to the fact that I have a new camera and I wanted to grab some easy sunset shots.

The hike itself is cake, but the peak itself is very prominent so you are rewarded with Chiracahua views for miles and miles.

At the top 9L and I perched ourselves up on some sort of boxy storage structure adjacent to the fire lookout on the summit and treated ourselves to summit beers. Then, we were both strangely surprised to see another fellow making his way up the summit- Obviously a summit sunset is not the most original idea. Anyways the sunset was colorful and the beers were tasty. It was a great way to end the day before settling back in at camp.
