Was signed up for the 100. But due to an injury that prevented me from doing much on Labor Day weekend, I figured I'm probably in no condition to attempt that, so the primary goal was 50.

Started out early in Downtown Prescott, and basically followed 89 2.5 miles to the trail. Pleasant temps in the morning, nothing remarkable as I made my way up to Groom Creek trail 10 miles in. By then it was light out, and it was nice and cool for the climb up Spruce and down Smith Ravine.

On Homestead, it started warming up, and I realized I had basically no energy. I'll chalk that up to a quick turnaround from flying back across the country on Thursday evening... Didn't want to be struggling just 20 miles in, but you can't have it all. At least the breeze tempered the sun a little.

Ranch trail was where the misery really started. I expected the climb, having been on that trail a couple times, but I absolutely hated Badger Mountain Trail. Long, windy, exposed, with the type of switchbacks that were probably designed to ensure mountain bikers don't have to put in any effort at all. 11 miles to do what's probably a 3-4 mile drive... Hopefully I never have to see Badger Mountain Trail ever again.

Things improved a little on Sundog Trail, which I actually liked better than BM. Then Peavine, which is just...flat. By the time I got to the dells, it was 5pm, and I figured the sun would be down before I got to 50. The north side of Watson Lake was actually a lot of fun, and I liked trying to move through there as fast as possible. Probably the only part of the day that was legitimately enjoyable.

One of my friends was waiting for me at the Watson Boat Ramp with a beer, which was a nice surprise.

By the time I got to Willow, it was getting dark, and I had to use a light most of the way through there. There were also thunderstorms moving in, which was fun (they didn't get to Willow, but I heard it got a little crazy closer to Granite Mountain). I really don't recommend going through the dells in the dark, it definitely upped the difficulty a level or two.

After that section, I decided to make it official and not go for what would've probably been a last place finish. I'm starting to come around to one of my friends' views that 50 miles is a superior distance to 100.

My old hiking buddy Ted moved up to Prescott Valley last March and he's been wanting me to visit him and check out the new pad and the trails up there. It's been a busy summer, but by this time in August, I've had enough of the desert heat and decided to trade that in for some less intense high desert heat. And humidity, it was also humid.

We started from the Peavine Trail south of Watson Lake and headed north. We did some of the trails to the east of the lake before making a loop around the lake on the various intertwining trails. A lot of these trails were mainly just bouldering, with some very steep grades. There wasn't a lot elevation gain, but the steepness either up or down made things challenging, especially when it was still about 90 degrees.

On the west side of the lake the trails go through some parking lots. After we made the climb up past the dam to above the lake level, I spotted a ramada with several picnic benches. It was almost 11am and I was pretty hungry, so we took a break and I had my usual Jimmy Johns lunch. After we finished, the remainder of the trails were mostly level, with a slight downhill grade and dirt, as opposed to the rock and boulders. This was welcomed by us. The last half mile some threatening clouds started to roll in but we were spared having to race back seeking shelter from lightning.

Hung out at Ted's for a bit after the hike and then headed back home. I-17 is looking interesting with the widening project.

Decided to drive up North on a whim for the afternoon to visit Watson Lake. I’d only been once before and hiked on Peavine, so I was excited to do the loop! I totally meandered and took everything in as I was in no rush.

I actually missed the traditional parking lot turn and was about to turn around when I saw a secondary parking area called Lake overlook (and it was free!), so I parked there and headed to the right to start the loop.

Just FYI There was a ton of things in the air that would make anyone with severe allergies miserable without proper meds! Once I got off the Peavine trail onto the loop trail it definitely got more interesting. For a hike with not a ton of elevation gain, you’ll still get a great workout. Climbing up, down and all around the rocks is a bit tiring! It was also pretty hot and humid.

Highlights for me were the treehouse, the cool geology & seclusion of the middle of the loop and also the waterfall dam. I did also see someone’s shelter tucked away and I didn’t get too close since I was solo, lol. I only saw one other woman hiking solo on the loop portion, but did see a solid amount of people once closer to the TH.

The water levels were pretty low; looked less than half full and the shallow areas were covered in algae. The sunset was a total stunner which was an awesome bonus! Really glad I got outside and always love exploring new places!

First time to Watson Lake. I was expecting a simple walk around the shoreline with some rocks to play on, but the dells along the north shore were mysterious and we spent some time exploring. We found a makeshift shelter that had a definite creepy vibe. Lots of blood sucking mosquitoes fed on our group, especially while exploring along the stagnant north shore coves.

Wondered the white spot trails north of Watson Lake from the Granite Dells TH. So many trails and could not name them all. Enjoyed the base of the dam and the cooling mist from the discharge. Too warm for the elevation and this late in Nov. Oh well helped burn some Tday calories.

Another fun hike out of my Boots and Burgers book. I wanted to start from the Watson Lake Park. I didn't plan right and got there an hour before it opened. I just waited but I had to skip my lunch plan later in the day :( . Cool little area. :)

Joe through a dart at the Constellation Trail system and said, come up with something. I didn't know anything about this "Little Gem" so I started downloading stuff. There are 11 trails in the Constellation Trail system, totaling less than 5 miles. So that wasn't going to make the drive to Prescott worth it. I'd looped Watson lake before and enjoyed the heck out of it. I'd always wanted to loop Willow Lake also, so it was on.

The Constellation Trail System is a wonderful group of of short trails through a boulder wonderland. Officially it's a self-enclosed system. But as we found on the way back, there is a trail that connects this with the Willow Dells system and Willow Lake. The Ron James Approach Trail does not show to connect on the maps, but it does. There is no signage and it's not obvious though.

All but the east side of Willow Lake looked like just a means to connect the loop, but then we stumbled on the Cottonwood Spur. Some of the biggest Cottonwood stands I've seen. `

Back on the Jan Alfano Trail and then we jumped over to Watson Lake, to do the loop there.

The highlight on this loop is the Lakeshore Trail and the Over The Hill Trail, taking you to the Granite Creek Dam.

Granite Creek Dam, Watson Lake Video :next: https://youtube.com ... nVp0
A little road walk got us back over to the Willow Dells Trails.

Once again the hiking was great, except for 1/2 hour bug storm we ran through.

I really enjoyed looping these two Granite infested lakes, and the weather was perfect!

A great time out with the Squad.

On the day....A Gopher snake, Squirrels, Cottontail rabbits, Cormorants, all sorts of Ducks, Bluejays, Blue Herons, A hawk diving out of the sky right in front of us snagging a bird.

Once around the lake. I don't think my wife would've waited for me if I went around twice. Then again, I had the car keys. We did a fair amount of birding along the way. Northern Shovelers were the popular sighting of the day. Two geese attempted to attack us. They met their fate at the end of my trekking poles.

Watson Lake Circle Trail should be renamed “Links (not Lynx) Lake Circle Trail”

I did Watson clockwise and Willow counterclockwise. These loops are okay but in both cases the part in the Granite Dells is very cool while the rest is a bit monotonous. I saw very few people on either loop. Weather was great, a bit cool at the beginning but very pleasant later.

I know two guys who were a bit tired after a weekend of more miles than normal so it was a nice occasion to get in a chill day on the water. Before we enjoyed a relaxing lake paddle, we opted to hike the circumference trail.

Weird day, since none of us expected to have to fight our way through a car show in order to get to lake parking. After that we hit the trails which were pretty quiet for an urban hike. The first couple of miles were through the Dells and very rocky and followed some stupid white dots every couple of feet to stay on trail. Eventually the trail goes beyond where the lake is dammed and it becomes very lush and green. We walked over to as close to the dam as we could get to check it out. The water from the dam pools into quiet little ponds that are home to some very large frogs. Afterwards we checked out some coves where Chumley found a bum house and also a tree house. Eventually we picked up the Peavine trail and were able to walk very quickly back to the car. The Peavine trail
has nice views of the lake on one side, and eventually takes an interesting turn on the opposite side.
Interesting views- a police training facility and a firefighter
training facility where we watched the fire men in action. Neat.

So, basically our quiet lake hike turned into, avoiding a car show, chumley almost walking into a bums house, exploring a questionable tree house and then watching some firefighters put out a mock fire. :)

Culture can only be bookended with adventure, and Watson Lake fit the bill.

9L wanted to get as many links in the shortest hike possible, so he went to HAZmasterB for research -- and Bruce's hiking history directed us to this gem of link heaven :y:
(Richard, I expect to see you up here in the next two weeks ;) )

There was some kind of car show in the Watson Lake Park, so we had to fight traffic to get in, but once there it was quite a peaceful hike. Only saw a couple of people on the circumference until the Peavine Trail. Below the dam is the most "strenuous" part of the hike and nobody goes there. It was stupid humid out and we were all soaked and ready for a swim. Too bad I wouldn't touch this water in a HAZmat suit!

Clouds made for some nice lighting though. South end of the lake is rather boring, Claire got to ogle some firefighters in action so that was good I guess.

We had a quick snack before continuing our adventure trifecta.

Pleasant paddle on a scenic lake. A handful of other boats out there (there's a rental facility available). A storm to the south of town kept our eyes on the sky, but it skirted well to the west. Only one boomer had us briefly considering abandoning ship.

This lake has so many little islands and coves that despite it being relatively small, you can easily spend a couple hours out here exploring.

In one way, I would have liked to swim. And in another I'm glad it's not permitted. This place would be a zoo.

Watson Lake is another place I have been wanting to explore- photos make it look so awesome.

The cloudy ominous weather contributed to making this a memorable day as well. We had fun exploring the coves and its a very scenic paddle trip. Once we were ready to head back we faced some strong headwinds but ultimately it was wonderful to get back on the water and I remembered how much I love paddling.

Thanks Chumley for hauling up the yaks and driving :D

This was a nice and easy loop before our planned kayaking trip. We made a clockwise loop around the lake. The hiking is okay but the views are nice. Some sections are a little rugged but easy overall. The dam was really cool and that area is very lush.

Fun Kayak with Chumley and Claire. Our going was very easy as we explored the coves and made a clockwise loop around the lake. A storm was off to the south but wasn't an issue. Nice day on the water. Thanks Chumley for driving!

Don't get your Hopes up, this is not The Eagle's Route....45 Miles in 1 Day? I don't think so.... :sl:

This was a Casual Day visiting Prescott...So Casual, that I didn't leave the House until 10:00 A.M. I just had to be somewhere at 5:00....I haven't spent much Time in Prescott since my Road Construction Days, so it was way overdue...Visited a "Lake" that I've never seen, visited another Lake that I haven't seen since I was 10, and visited a Lake that I've only seen from Highway 89....I would be Meeting several People at the last Lake for a Sunset Photo Shoot...Good Excuse to actually visit this Lake finally and also just to spend some Time in Prescott... :)

Before actually hitting the first of the Lakes, I took a Drive looking for some Pronghorn...Found 3 Different Herds but Photos were very Tough due to Heat Distortion...I got there too late in the Morning for good Light and better Shots...Once I was done enjoying them, I hit the first "Lake"....

Fain Park and "Lake"....I've heard this is a Good Birding Spot in the Winter so I decided to check it out...It's basically a small City Park...Anyone that calls this a Lake must be from Minnesota... It's about 2 Acres, maybe, and if you could actually just Walk the Shoreline all the way around at a Decent Clip, it would take you about 5 Minutes... ;) There is a very Interesting Mining Equipment Exhibit on the Shoreline. I'm surprised some of the Equipment doesn't magically disappear, but with some of it, it would be a Major Undertaking, which would most likely be Noticed, even down there... I decided to Hike the Canyon Trail, around the "Lake" and past the Dam into the "Canyon" below. It's supposed to be a Loop and it is, but the City needs to add a couple of more Signs on the North Side. And remove an old "Private Road Do Not Enter" Sign on the Road that they actually use for part of the Trail... It got a bit confusing and I ended up avoiding the Road and just walking up the Hill through the Desert to get back near the Parking Lot...For those that might be interested, the "Trail" goes through the Parking Lot of the Church...I ended up almost crashing a Wedding.... It was getting pretty warm by the Time I got back to the Escape, so it was Time to hit something a little Higher... :D

Lynx Lake...Haven't seen this Lake since I was 10...To say it's changed a bit may be an Understatement... Took me about 10 Minutes just to nab a Parking Spot and then I hit the Trail...Didn't go even halfway, which was fine as I really didn't have Time to do the whole thing anyway. I found a Woodpecker that I've been wanting to get some Decent Photos of...I Stalked it and ended up following it Home, so I set up a Vigil there for about an Hour... After I was done, I meandered back towards the Parking Lot just dinking around with the Camera...There's a Shot I would love to get of this Lake at Sunrise some time, and I'd like to Hike the whole thing on the Super Highway they are calling a Trail....Back up to the Parking Lot and onward to my next Lake....

Watson Lake...Seen many Times from the Highway, but I've never actually been to the Lake...The Photo Club I belong to was having a Shoot here, so it was a good Time to start getting acquainted with it...It's as Cool as it looked from the Highway and More...Spent a lot of Time Hiking along some of the Trails, Scrambling up on the Rocks and wearing down a Battery in the Camera....It didn't look like we were going to have much for Clouds at Sunset, but a Fire off in the Distance provided some Color...I think it may have been from a Managed Fire near Williams...After the Sunset, I set my Camera on a Rock since I don't have a Tripod right now and got some Longer Exposures... :D It was a Good Afternoon and Evening and I'm glad I went...I could certainly see spending more Time here, both at Lynx and Watson. There are other Lakes here too that I need to see as well.... :D

Good Trip to Prescott....Nice to finally spend some Time here without actually working on a Highway.... :D

The Granite Dells, one of my favorite places. This is the place to go if you are into scrambling over boulders or parkour training. Great lake for kayaking as well. Sticking to the trail was not the preferred option for me.

Climbed, hopped, jumped across narrow ravines. Fun stuff and the granite is super grippy.

When I was done playing, hopped in the kayak and paddled around the lake for a few hours with friends.

This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.
